Automatic headlights
Hi! I got this automatic headlamp switch with 2 sensors. I need auto function to always turn on headlights, no matter how dark/bright it is outside. Tried to cover both sensors with a black tape, but for some reason lights didn't come on until i covered switch with a hand at least for 1 second, and then relay turns on lights and they stay lit.
Maybe someone have this switch and can give more insight? Thank you! :)
Safely lift the car
Hello, which one of those two options ist the right way to lift the car? I want to remove the tire because it makes a weird noise. The now grey parts (under the doors) have been swapped due to rust and now there is not this gap, that you need to lift the car. Is it safe to do it like I do now?
Would this split hose cause petrol smell when using fan?
Apologies for the noob question, I was on a long drive yesterday using the fan, No ac as its broken so just the fan. And ocassionaly a semi strong smell of petrol would enter the car, it would come and go but no smell when fan was off.
Car has been off and parked overnight smelt a petrol smell in this area and located a slightly split hose on either side, of what I think is the EVAP system? Would this be the reason why? Can anyone advise? It's the hose that attaches onto the nipple.
Help me get my AC blowing cool, how to enter the rabbit hole?
So as of right now, I know that neither rad fan turns on if I turn the AC on. If I pull the fuse in the cabin, or the car is running in the hot sun, only the smaller fan spins. I also don’t know if my condenser even actually works…..
So far, I’ve picked up a big fan, and a fan control module both from a really clean beetle at the junkyard….. have yet to install because it’s so ungodly hot where I live….
Black leather interior is not it when you have a broken window regulator and zero ac lmao
Speedo stuck any help?
Hello all fixing this mk4 golf I got for £200 and noticed the speedo is stuck at 110 any ideas on how to fix it?
Also the airbag light has recently showed up for some reason any help?
Thankyou
Need to remove the horribly applied matt black. Any tips?
He didn't remove the original red. Literally just rattled can matt black straight onto the original paint work. Hes given it to me, and I want to restore it back to normal. Will a strong pressure washer do the trick?
Turning into a snowball project!
Just looking for some commiseration, but I'll preface this with I am not a mechanic. I just like to dabble. Fixing stuff is a challenge to me.
2002 Mk4 Golf 1.8T GTI
So a while ago I had a coolant hose blow, led me to noticing the coolant was sludgey. Ruled out a head gasket (thank god) because oil didn't look contaminated. I think at some point the wrong coolant was added and/or my oil cooler is bad and is letting some oil into the coolant. So I do a coolant flush, run the hose through a bit then add a cleaner, get the majority of the gunk out. Along the way, I fixed the coolant hose that busted (crappy brittle plastic joint, thankfully just a straight connection)
Now it's time to replace the oil cooler, seems simple enough. I drained the oil, drained the coolant lines. I have the car up on jack stands, but not very high. I also don't have a creeper, so I'm just scootching on a dismantled piece of garage shelving on my back. I realized the clamps to remove the hoses from the oil cooler are much more accessible from up top. So I go up top, but some other coolant hoses are in the way. I don't have hose clamp pliers, so I'm fumbling around with a variety of other pliers to disconnect some other hoses that are in my path. I get the clamps loose, jiggle the hose to disconnect it...snap...freaking brittle hose connections! The engine coolant pipe T connector just crumbles at every connection, just like the other straight connector did. I spent way too long digging broken brittle bits of plastic out of the ends of 4 hoses and making sure none had made its way further in. So now I'm contemplating replacing all of the connections with aluminum. $30 on amazon, but I'm not sure the quality will be great...but at this point, it'll be better than it was.
So I let that be for now until I can get a replacement part. I decided the hose clamps on the oil cooler will be much easier to get at if I unbolt the oil cooler first, then I can move it around a bit more. But wait! I don't have a 27mm socket 🤦♀️ I have literal billions of other socket sizes, but not that one. Sooooo now I gotta buy that too.
And to top it off, I don't have a good shop light, so I'm doing all this with a little LED flashlight in my mouth 😆
I'm doing this because it's fun, right? 😖
Shopping list:
-already got an oil cooler
-hose clamp pliers
-creeper
-good shop light
-aluminum hose connectors
-27mm socket
-....? What next?
Rough idle
My 2.0l recently developed these codes after I repainted the intake manifold I've smoke tested the car through the brake booster hose, and found no leaks. It starts like it has a vacuum leak, with rpms spiking more than normal then dropping, there's also a slight hesitation on throttle.
Literally every engine sensor except the knock sensor have been replaced with the last 10k
Car has 180k on it
Ty for help
Extra note: the car recently had pcm processor faults they were cleared when battery was disconnected
Oil Everywhere 🫠
Any guidance would be appreciated. Seeing lots of oil not sure why.
3 doors vs 5 doors headliner
Hello, is there any major difference between 3 doors and 5 doors headliner? The cardboard on my beauty is gone and i need a replacement, but 3 doors are an hard find.
Thank you, and photo of the toy for refence
Weird rattling noise
Hello, I have my golf mk4 since five years now and had barely any problems besides some rust so far. I made a service only about two months ago, now a few days ago, a strange sound at the BACK of the car on the RIGHT SIDE NEAR THE WHEEL occurs. Sometimes it is stronger and sometimes it just disappeared completely so i thought it is gone now, but then it keeps coming again. It sounds like plastic but sometimes there is a metal sound too. It only happens during bumpy parts of the road. This has never happened in 5 years before.
I will try to attach a video that I recorded. It is difficult to hear but better than nothing. I hope someone knows, what it might could be.
It's also pretty loud actually, in the video it is very little noise compared to what it really sounds like
Thank you!
Can anyone remember for me, what junkyard car this shift knob came out of?
reddit.comat least i got to put 4k miles on it
had my mk4 for about five months before the world decided it was wayyy to nice for me to own. so be it.
Subframe & LCA Advice
Looking for any advice for what I should do with suspension components. I need to replace my subframe, but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg. Anyone who’s done any sort of upgrades with LCAs or other suspension components there, what’s worth it? And are there any adjustability options outside of OEM that I should consider ? Any recommendations appreciated.
For added context, I’m on bags and have a rear stress bar and K brace. Thanks
I acquired the mk4 Bentley manual pdf; figured I'd share it here. I have the paperback as well, it's very thorough.
reddit.comClutch problems (any help appreciated)
For context i drive a rhd 2003 pd130 6 speed (02m) estate.
So I was driving, got to a set of traffic lights. Went into neutral, then going to set off, put my clutch in and put into first. Pedal was stuck on the floor but had resistance when i pushed it down initially. Pulled it up myself then pumped it a few times and it felt okay. Then i try for first again, put clutch all the way down and then in first, the car engages first gear even with the clutch pedal all the way down. Checked my brake fluid level and it seems alright. I had no warning signs at all. It just randomly happened. My clutch wasnt slipping or anything and the pedal felt normal. The clutch has only got around 40 or 50k miles on it. Unsure what it could be, i dont think its the clutch itself, maybe the slave or master cyliner. But im unsure how i can test this. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Rooftop tent, how bad can it be?
Some family members of mine have a rooftop tent that i could borrow, however google is telling me my roof can't handle the weight. Does anyone have any experience with this? I do have a 3 door and was planning on getting Thule roofbars for them since those are the only ones i can find lol.
I see plenty of pics out there but those all appear to be 5 door models.
