Sudden immobilizer issues

Or maybe not so sudden. About 7 months ago, I went to start my car, then it shut off seconds later. Immo light flashing. Tried again and it was fine

Since then, it’d only done this maybe 5 times. Until about a week ago, now, it’s at least once a day…

……. Which leads me to 5 minutes ago, where mid drive, my car just shuts off…. Immo light flashing, now it’s become a real problem. You crossed the line immo

Where to check first? If it comes down to actually replacing parts, I’m taking it to a guy for an immo defeat. As I’ve found keys in the junkyard that actually start the car for a second anyway haha.

I have a single key programmed to this car. No spare key to test with

Sad day. Will be retiring my mk4 golf for the foreseeable future. Until I can decide if I still want to fix it or sell it on.

Owned my PD150 for 9 years now on 155K

Had nothing but problems with it all honesty. From a replacement engine. Down to all bushes, exhaust and suspension being replaced.

Financially it's been really bad and I should have scrapped it years ago. Especially when I blew the engine up.

Theres a lot that needs sorting. Bodywork being the main thing. I daily it and it's just in the garage too much getting fixed for me to enjoy it anymore.

Then to add to my woes it needs the struts coming apart again because x2 mechanics have absolutely bodged it when they replaced the parts.

Theres a strong love hate relationship and as of late it's just been purely hate and no love.

It's got character and the colour concept interior, genuine rear valance genuine R32 Wheels. It's not the worst MK4 out there. But it ain't winning any awards anytime soon that's for sure.

Maybe ill come back here if I decide to fix it up and modify it further.

I have just fitted a brand new hybrid and seems a shame to waste it. But like i said uneconomical to fix and think it's time for a change.

Weather stripping

Hi all
I just got my hands on this beauty. It’s got lots to fix but this one is something I can’t quite figure out on my own. The weather stripping on the windows has shrunken and or torn. It’s now crafty and whistles when driving. I’ve scoured the internet to try and find some to replace it with but to no avail. Has anyone else had this issue? And how did you fix it?

AC does sporadically not work - G263 measures 0 degrees

Hello,

I fixed some parts and filled the AC up, it's working quite well, but sometimes it just stops working. I think that putting it into econ for some time and then reactivating helps. Sometimes it works for an hour straight and then sometimes only for a few minutes.

Vcds says the sensor for evaporator (G263) measures 0 degrees Celcius. I checked on YouTube, quite a hassle to change that one. But also people say their AC stopped working because of this sensor - where mine actually doesn't stop working completely. Also I don't have any fault code stored

My AI of choice suggests that the climatronic thinks everything is fine and then after some time the evaporator will freeze and won't let air through, as the real temp is not detected and the compressor keeps on going. Putting it into econ melts it, so it works after some cool down (or heat up lol).

What do you think? Is this plausible? Has anyone had the same problem? Pic for attention

Turbo replacement options

I have a mk 4 golf with the AHF engine (110hp ve).
my turbo has some problem either with the vanes or the actuator where it doesn’t open and close properly. Boost comes in at around 3k rpms. the turbo is the standard one for that engine.

I want to do a stage 1 ecu tune to get it il to 140bhp, however, i need to settle the turbo problem first.

I have a couple of options.

1- buy another used 110hp ahf turbo for 120 eur.
2- try to find a used pd130/150 turbo for 200-300 eur.
3-buy a hybrid pd150 turbo for 750+ the intercooler needed for another 350-400.

I don’t know if it is worth it to buy the hybrid turbo, as i wont be pushing past 150hp anytime soon.

And I also don’t know if the standard 110 turbo is reliable enough for 140hp.

What would you do?

So… what to do with these?

After I tragically lost my mk4, I’m left with some hard to get rid of parts, it’d be a shame to junk them, and there’s been no interest on fb marketplace, so I’m just looking for suggestions on how to sell or get rid of these, especially the doors. I don’t have door cards with them, and it’s for a 2 door with manual windows and mirrors. 2 brand new mirrors, and a brand new driver’s door lock actuator. (The dark spot on the door is me hiding my reflection lol) I may also have a couple other odds and ends left but this is most of it.

mk4 R32 rhythmic metal "chugging" noise, the timing chain?

Cold start was okay, none of this noise. But after motor is warm, this "metal chugging" on a rhythmic sound shows up. Any ideas?

Edit 1: Wanted to record cold start, but didn’t press the record button, silly me. This is sound 1-2 mins after cold start. No "metal chugging noise"

https://imgur.com/UkgyK6u

Am not sure if it’s single or dual mass flywheel. I’ll go take a drive to warm up the engine and try the pressing clutch pedal to see if anything happens. Will update again shortly.

What's everyones opinion on gearbox oil?

Most non-car people usually say that you shouldn't change it as it's designed for life or something. But did VW really expect MK4's to still be 'alive' in 2026?

My instinct is to change it. I did actually start doing it but struggled to get the drain-plug out and rounded it off. So it's not getting changed anyway without considerable ballache.

So, do you change? What are the arguments for/against?

I love this car

Here in Aus, there’s not many mk4 golfs driving around. Which sucks for sourcing parts but makes it so much cooler when u see other ones driving around on the rare occasion. This mk4 2.slow was my first car, handed down from grandma lol. It was in pretty decent condition, but slowly has started to develop problems. I love this car a lot, specially this one, my one. But there’s a problem, the engine. The 2.0 is just very.. bleh, so I was thinking “1.8t swap it”. I can’t decide to either spend money fixing all the issues with this engine, or just swap a 1.8t in (ik it’s A-LOT easier said than done). But, what would u do in this “scenario”.

My Mk4

I love this car how mechanical it feels.

Its a 2001 pd130 with 388k km it runs great and pulls strongly.

Not in perfect condidtion but for the price i paid its not bad. Some scratches but minor overall.

This is the picture when i bought it. Since i did a lot with it!

Looking for the cause of missfire

I already changed spark plugs, ignition coils, and distributor think it could be a fuel problem like fuel pump or proportion valve. Isn’t burning any coolant or oil. Won’t rev past 5k rpms big loss or power

Amplifier remote wire

Goodevening,

I'm looking to install a subwoofer in the trunk, I heard from a friend that you can install the amplifier remote cable to the 75X terminal under the dashboard. Is this safe/would this work?

Greetings

MK5 MFSW on a non-mfsw Golf 4?!

Hey y’all

Just wanted to ask whether anybody here has installed a MFSW from MK5+ on their non-MFSW Golf4. I recently purchased a MK5 GTI steering wheel with multifunction controls and I want to install it into my Golf MK4 but a bit confused on how to do it (process, plug and play harness, etc).

Has anybody here done this retrofit successfully, and what was their process with it?

Cheers!
