Written Review: US Halal Menu 10 - Beef Stew

Hi folks!

Here, we continue our exploration of the modern US Military Halal rations. Today is menu 10, beef stew.

This is a 2025 production with an inspection date of 2027. These have a 2 year date instead of 3 like modern standard MREs.

Pics 1-4 show packaging and contents. As we've seen with previous menus, gone are the flimsy packaging, instead opting for packaging more in alignment with modern standard MREs. We still see some significant differences, such as the accessory kits. We also see, again, items that are similar to what is in modern standard MREs but different (e.g., the oatmeal cookie in modern MREs vs. the Oatmeal Round in these Halal).

Not shown is the beverage base. Again, it contains maltodextrin, which I am not against. It simply makes the calories too high to be worth consuming from my perspective. It shall be given away at some point.

Pic 5 shows the oatmeal round. A familiar item for sure, but noticeably different from the oatmeal cookies in MREs. These are more sense with a firmer bite, but still maintain that familiar flavor profile that we all know and love from an oatmeal cookie. A wonderful item for sure.

Pic 6 is the beef stew. Again, this item has the familiar flavor of the modern MRE beef stew, but yet, it is noticeably different. The main difference here is the beef. The beef in the Halal is much less processed and has a more natural bite and feel, making it seem more wholesome and hearty. I dare to say, however, that in terms of overall flavor, it may be a bit more bland than standard MRE beef stew. Regardless, it was a great meal that I did not doctor in any way (no salt, no pepper, no chili flakes, nothing).

Pic 7 is the blueberry turnover, well heated in my toaster oven, which really turned that filling into a magnificent blueberry napalm. A truly different experience eating that with hot filling vs. cold. Bright blueberry flavor with a wonderful texture.

Pic 8 is the trail mix that includes actual M&Ms. Yes, they are listed in the ingredients. This mix has walnut halves in it! It's just fantastic! The only downside is that it is not salted. Crunchy and delicious.

We have seen these modern Halal menus deliver effectively and consistently, and this menu is no different. We have 2 menus left in this case, and one is one of the only true remaining breakfast menus left in modern MREs since the maple sausages demise this year (2026) from the MRE lineup. That menu is cherry rolled oats with added almond flavoring! Stay tuned for a review on that one soon!

The rare, illustrious, Irish ORP - Menu 7 - Vegetarian

This thing was pretty sweet to get to open, and on camera nonetheless. Thanks to our resident Brit Amelie for handing this one off- thanks girl!

Anyway; The mains in here were super different from what you'd expect from an Irish ration. There was no bacon and cabbage, very very limited potato, no chinese takeaway with curry sauce, and weirdly enough, no Guinness.

The mains were all very surprisingly tasty; they tasted way better than they looked, which is a repeating thing in the world of rations outside of, say, France.

The most surprising thing that stood out for me was the sheer amount of drinks in this bad boy. FOUR cold drinks(500ml each), two teas, two coffees, and a hot chocolate (which was 400ml!) Outstanding hydration.

On the note of drinks, I also took out TWENTY tabs of water purification tabs, which apparently might have been a double-packing, but still- way more than the normal paltry one tablet in a ration.

I'm going to have a lay down after this pack today, with all the curry, and the korma, and spicy peanuts and such...

Cheers!

My very first Estonian Ration.

What an experience chicken pate was to die for….. smooth and creamy with a hint of chicken liver taste overall very enjoyable. The main course beef goulash seemed like 2 pounds of instant mashed potato mix with a little bit of vegetables and meat flavor. Hope everyone enjoys the video.

Bow down to your new Jomipsa Overlords

Waffels asked for it and I'm here to amuse y'all. This is a UN? 24 hour Menu 2 Halal made by our friends and benefactors at Jomipsa. This is just in the best by date of 6/2026 and this is a huge ration. It comes in at just over 4000 calories over 3 mains and a plethora of snacks and drinks. I did the first meal as a light breakfast (for my mid afternoon late lunch) mirroring what they have listed in the suggested meals. I had the coffee with a pack of sugar, a pack of sweet biscuits, the jelly bar, almonds, chocolate, crunchy muesli and almond & fig bar.

The coffee was only 3g so I made the cup about 6oz and that is some good coffee. I thought the pack of sugar might be too sweet at 9g but it paired well with everything bringing a perfect amount of coffee bitterness to counter the sweet. It was smooth and robust with a strong coffee smell and taste. Too bad there weren't more packs of it. 9/10 for me. Give me more.

The sweet biscuits are well, sweet biscuits. The closest thing I can compare them to in texture and flavor would be a graham cracker. Not quite as sweet as one which allows them to pair well across different items. I love them and they're always a 10/10 in my book.

The jelly bar was an interesting bite. It was an apple jelly candy bar like a fruit slice in texture. It was on the sticky side and coated with a sugar crust of sorts. It held together as I was munching away. It had a light apple flavor with a hint of lemon. It had citric acid so that's probably it. This would be wild as another flavor. Black currant or raspberry would be amazing. Apart from it being apple (which I don't hate, it's just plain Jane) I'll still give it an 8.5/10.

The granola was a nice textural component and slightly sweet with only a few raisins in it. Nothing that special but gives a bit of extra fiber to the day. 7/10 on this one.

The almonds were also plain and unsalted. My intense dislike of unsalted nuts aside, almonds are the only nut that I'll enjoy unsalted as they have a nice flavor with just a hint of sweetness and a great crunch. 8/10 all day long.

The chocolate bar is a standard dark chocolate that we would call semi-sweet here in the US. This would be awesome in a chocolate chip cookie. A bite of chocolate with a bite of sweet biscuit almost gets you there. I believe this is a tropical style chocolate bar in that it has that waxy mouth feel and doesn't melt all that smoothly. Not a deal breaker just an interesting texture. It was also not bloomed in the slightest and still had that snap. 7/10 for me. There's much better ration chocolate out there and definitely much worse.

Finally there was the almond and fig bar. This is probably much different than any fig bar you've had in the US at least. In Spain there is a treat called pan de higo (fig bread) but it's just figs and almonds pressed together in a very, very firm cake. It's not tough but it's very toothsome. It's also on the drier side. The smell and taste are strong of figs. It also pairs well with cheese if you're into that sort of thing. It was fantastic to me and I give it a 9/10.

So far this has been fantastic and I'll have a few more reviews for each meal. This is a huge amount of food that could be spread out over 3 rather large meals or at least 5-6 smaller ones. There are a few things I won't bother with like the milk powder. It's milk powder. I'll use it in some recipe or something like mac and cheese.

RCIR storage temperature

I left a carton of 12 RCIRs in my car trunk for three days, and we are currently experiencing a heatwave in France (temperatures are around 40°C where I am). When I touched the carton, I could tell the rations had gotten hot. In theory, do you think they are still safe to eat ?

USGI MRE UGR Cinnamon Roll with White Icing

The rolls smell and taste very good but are dense. I warmed them up and they softened a little. Icing is not very good. Over sweetened chemicals. But if you don't put too much icing, together they are okay.

For what it is, what it's made for and how long it lasts, I was very impressed.

The Greatest Ration Ever Made - Revisiting The CR1M - Australian 24hr Military Ration

I revisited the CR1M, this time sourced by our very own MKR, big thanks to Mike for that!

The mains, Muesli, Bolognaise, and a Lamb Stew; all fantastic. The meat in the bolognaise was a bit more minced than I'm used to as an American, but it was phenomenal. The lamb stew was sensational. The muesli was absolutely well engineered to be a key starter for a busy day, with tons of sustainable energy.

Tons of desserts in this pack, from a weird Musk flavored hard candy that tastes like perfume, to M&Ms, chocolate, sweetened condensed milk, jammie dodgers, and a citrus cake. All were excellent, except the chocolate ration- which had me guessing if it was supposed to be created to be like the Hershey's Tropical bar from decades past.

The sides were all very enjoyable except the tuna. Don't ever eat the tuna. Never the tuna.

Also, never try the protein drink from a 2020 CR1M. They do not hold up, and every time now, i've been hopeful, and it's just not worth trying. I'll probably try it again the next time, though, because I'm dumb.

I re-attacked the vegemite, and this time I did it right. I gotta say, I was super surprised and am probably now addicted to vegemite. Beware, if you do it the right way, its going to be an expensive condiment if you're in the US.

Estonian Mexican rice. Nailed it?

For dinner Sunday night I grabbed an Estonian menu 1 gluten free Mexican style rice. It's a freeze dried main and comes with the chicken loaf, vegetable crisps, salted peanuts, lemon tea and raspberry isotonic. As one meal I had a bit of trouble finishing it because it is a lot of food. Don't let freeze dried meals fool you before they're hydrated. They swell up big time.

While the main was hydrating I started with the crisps, loaf and peanuts. I also made the drinks. I'm going to start with the worst part of the meal and that was the lemon tea. Out of the pack it had a strong lemon scent that was like lemon cleaner. Sadly this translated into the tea as well. I put the pack of sugar in it as well and that didn't help anything. I love lemon in tea but this wasn't it. I don't know if they treat the tea with lemon oil or a chemical facsimile but please stop. This was a 2/10 . Next up was the raspberry isotonic and that was a damn fine drink. It called for 500mL of high quality H2O and dissolved perfectly. It looked like a strawberry lemonade instead of the usual vibrant red. They might not use artificial dyes. I will this had the perfect level of sweetness for me at 500mL and the flavor was pleasantly tart just like a good raspberry should be. I really wish we had more raspberry flavored things here. I know they exist but aren't as prevalent as strawberry. An easy 9/10 for me and wish it had 2.

The salted peanuts were a small portion but mighty in their hunger fighting capabilities. These were perfectly salted and I would much rather have a small amount of salted nuts than the huge bags of unsalted blandness you usually get. Again this was a perfect size to go with this meal. 9/10, just needed more.

Next up were the foam boards...I mean vegetable crisps. These are a light, airy textured plank that really feels like a piece of foam in the hand and mouth. I've only had plain ones up until this point and those are so bland that it's tough to eat them all without something on them. But these are far superior. The upfront vegetable flavor was a bit strange but after a couple of bites it mellowed out to this deep, savory flavor that almost tasted like chicken broth. These were fantastic and a definite upgrade to the plain ones. 8.5/10 for these.

The chicken loaf is a sight to behold. I saw a comment from someone that I assume was from Estonia that stated that they no longer use this brand as the troops didn't care for it. I'm not familiar with the popularity of this brand and don't know if it's considered dollar store quality but I've enjoyed the ones I've eaten and this one is no exception. The smell and look is just like Oscar Meyer bologna and so is the texture. It cuts easily with a plastic MRE spoon. In combination with those vegetable crisps this was certainly the start of the show. I don't think I'd eat one everyday because of the salt level but I could keep a few of those on the shelf for a light meal. Top with a bit of good mustard and onions and holy shit you have some redneck shark coochie at its finest. The chicken loaf is 10/10 for me.

The final boss of this ration was the Mexican style rice. It called for 450mL of water and used every last drop. In reality I added closer to 500mL because when I emptied it into the bowl it was still a bit dry and I let it soak like 30 minutes as I was eating the rest and not in a huge hurry. This is what microwaves are for. It looked amazing and the rice hydrated into mostly individual grains and not a gummy mess like it can. The flavor is where they lost me though. It wasn't near as savory as I thought it would be. I was expecting a deep, chili infused rice. Not necessarily spicy and this definitely had no spice to it. But oddly enough it had cinnamon or some other warm spice in it and felt like they were going for a birria inspired flavor profile but missed the mark. It needed some lime juice to give it punch and more seasoning to give it a better depth of flavor. I was struggling by the end partly due to the size but also the flavor. Would I eat this again is the real question? I haven't had all the menus yet so there could be some that I think are horrible but I won't know until I collect and eat them all. I'll give it a 4/10. I would reach for it first, or maybe I would so I could save what I like for later.

Overall this was not a terrible meal, just the main was holding it back. It could have also used a small thing of jam to go with the crackers and yes it would have worked just fine.
