Going Straight From an MSW to a PhD in Social Work

I’m about to begin my MSW and my goal is to apply directly into a PhD in Social Work after graduating, so I want to start preparing early.
For those who went straight from an MSW into a PhD:
What did you do during your MSW to become a stronger applicant?
Did you work clinically while doing the PhD?
Were you also working toward licensure hours at the same time?
How manageable was the workload realistically?
Is there anything you wish you had done differently during your MSW?
I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences from people who took this path.

I got in!!!! ASU Fall 2026!

I'm doing a career pivot and going back for my master's at 39, after not being in school for about 15 years!! I was worried I wouldn't get accepted anywhere because I graduated with a low undergrad gpa(like a 2.2) but I've had over a decade of healthcare case management experience. I got really real on my personal statement, and to show I'm a much better student, over the last year and a half I took 6 classes via open university. I took a mix of social work, counseling and psychology classes and received A's in all of them! Still waiting on two more decisions but ASU was my overall first choice!! And for one of my letters of recommendation I got a letter from my social work professor, who was an LCSW.

Waiting to hear about MSW 2026

I have seen a lot of people have already been accepted for the Silberman MSW fall 2026. I applied March 1st and have not heard back, and it's been over 10 weeks. How late do they get back to people? Is it a bad sign I have heard nothing?
