Essentials Keyboard

Essentials Keyboard

💚 Vielen Dank!

Ideas for HiLight to make it more fun and useful

We've all seen how underutilized HiLight is on the new Pixel 11 Pro series. Right now, it only lights up for Gemini and calls from favorite contacts, and the only other use we've heard of is a future update enabling text messages from favorite contacts.

However, I think HiLight has the potential to be far more fun and useful. Here are a few ideas that I have:

  1. Video/audio recording light. Any time microphone permission is used (as is done in most videos), display a red blinking light just like on dedicated cameras and audio recorders. Variation of Becca Farsace's idea in her Pixel 11 camera overview video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmdT12aICmo)

  2. Charge status: When the phone is fully powered off, show a red light for charging and show a green light for fully charged. Basically similar to what many Android phones used to do back then.

  3. Good ol' classic notification LED: just like the old days, when all phones had notification LEDs.

  4. Third-party API: This has been reiterated before, but I just want to re-emphasize it here. I'd be very interested to see how different ends would utilize this.

Google (and third party apps) could also play with gradients, different blinking patterns, etc. for different use cases.

On the latest Essentials both on Android and Wear OS the watches can vibrate harder or I just imaging this?

My watch is Pixel Watch 1 series so I think you can imaging what I feel after this update 😅 because readed some day ago you are using Pixel watch 1 too.

Something new, Flashlight Effects. Coming soon...

Try out the next time you're in need of help or maybe at a party or a concert :3

Breaking! MeDrop is cancelled before even launched, And I'm happy about it :D

Should I still keep it? This is only utilizing NFC and the receiving device does not need the app, Just need NFC.

Very very experimental in the early stages.

And waiting for the update from Google to be available, I know I am always the last to receive such cool features (-_-)

Essentials WearOS Launcher, An experiment

https://reddit.com/link/1vkcq7k/video/dnli937qmhih1/player

Why?

  • Custom notification sounds
  • Match material you colors with Android
  • Better unread notifications
  • Better media player

And was wondering many other things which could be improved but was not possible.

Why not?

This does bring a few drawbacks tho.

  • Replacing the default launcher on wearOS means you need to replace everything!
  • Notification panel, quick settings, watchfaces, tiles, complications, call UI and many other things will be lost and will need to be re-implemented.

But also,

That does mean we have the full control over the device and the UI! We can implement It's pretty much like another OS.

Would you switch? Despite some drawbacks?

Many new cool things in Essentials v17.0 ... I lost track (っ◕‿◕)っ

  • SurfaceFlinger modifications
    • Reaching further into Android settings by modifying the runtime overlays with surface flinger.
  • New networks feature category
    • Network download rate limit
    • Mobile data always on
    • Wireless display certification
  • Power and battery feature category
    • Standby apps controls for further power saving
  • New feature organization and categories UI
  • Group features in categories
  • Somethings are not always essential. Automate Essential features.
  • App Freezing
    • Freeze automations
    • Toggle auto freeze from app grid
    • Frozen app tags/ categories
    • Filter frozen apps by tags
    • Cleaner frozen apps UI with FAB menu
    • Optional color coded frozen app tags in grid
  • Updated searchUI to match Android settings
  • GenAI (Gemini Nano)
    • You can now ask on device Gemini Nano to create automations for you
    • GenAI is disabled by default, Enable in settings
    • Not all devices are supported, refer
    • First time use may take some time for the models to download
    • AI will make mistakes, Please review the content
    • This was done mainly to learn how to use these APIs and it was fairly easy. AI is and will not be a main feature of this app unless you want to. Let me know if you really want to see support for other devices with maybe using Gemini API keys or so.
  • Added App Functions support for Gemini
    • App functions are not yet public by Google, So you can't really use them until they allow everyone to integrate app functions
    • But, that being said, this allows you to externally control many features of the app
  • New in-app help and guides
  • Easier access to in-app help and guides from main screen
  • Smart Pixels. Save power with OLED displays by turning off individual pixels.
  • Extract and use wallpaper accent color before you apply
  • Major project refactor, reformat and updated architecture
    • Had some AI credits left and decided to make a plan and fully re-structure the app into a new more readable and maintainable architecture
    • Why? Having 2000+ lines in the main view model was not fun, Nor having the services of each feature placed randomly around the codebase, no proper method declarations, lack of documentation and many other things were bothering me every time I was working on the project.
    • So no, anyone is welcome to contribute and check out the project and you will easily get used tot eh structure of the codebase and also will easily learn where to look for things with the included documentation
  • Fix: shizuku stop() command with auth token
  • Fix: battery sheet broken translations
  • New Wiki! (WIP)
    • I will try to maintain a GitHub Wiki but it is not easy to keep up to the development.
    • Most of the documentation is generated and under review.
    • Contributions are welcome!
  • And many many more improvements and fixes, Maybe a couple more bugs to fix later ( ´ ▽ ` )

[Essentials] Question/Suggestion regarding Standby Apps feature

Hello Sameera, hello +all!

First of all, needless to say, your application is awesome!

I recently updated to the last version and I saw your new standby applications feature.

Because of the huge number of applications I'm using on my devices (more than half of them are for work, custom applications made by me or my workplace), I had been looking for a way to actually bulk restrict select applications from running in the background and using background battery and data. I had tried ReAppzuku for that, but since I'm already using Essentials, I'd rather use one app than two :)

Essentially (see what I did there?) what I would like to do is, when I'm using one of those applications, perhaps keep it in memory while being actively used but, when I swipe it away, keep it on a very short leash so it won't be able to run on its own (i.e 0 background usage, 0 network usage unless I'm not actively using it).

However I'm not technically savvy and I'm not exactly sure how I can do that.

I see specific options we are able to select for each application, Active, Working set, Frequent, Rare, and Restricted. I can guess that for what I would like to do setting those applications to "Rare" is the perfect way to go. Since if I set them to "Restricted" the moment I leave the app, it will immediately close down. Can someone verify this? :)

Finally, a suggestion regarding this feature, which I'm not sure if it's easy to implement. Would it be possible to batch select specific restrictions for multiple applications at once? Again my use case is probably extreme but with more than 500 applications on my two devices, it will be a nightmare changing that setting one by one :)

Thank you!

Banking Apps not working

With recent updates to my banking apps, it seems the app won't let me make transactions because it's detected Essentials is installed on my phone...

Any way to bypass this issue?

I think the Essentials's bubbles feature is buggy.

Hi. I think the Essentials's bubbles feature is buggy. Sometimes it is working on A droid 16 the Messenger bubbles sometimes not. I mean I can't touch it to see the messages I can only remove it or change its locations.

Thanks for your reply.

Smart Pixels with Battery Saver + Automation Apps

I wonder if you could combine the newly smart pixels feature with the battery saver mode to save extra battery?
Also, is there a way to toggle/use the Essential's features via Tasker or Mactrodroid?

Intro to Essentials, toggles

Hey, I'm very new to Essentials and I couldn't find FAQ here on or your website so I'm sorry for asking maybe too obvious things.

1 I have Pixel 7A and Google play store tells me Shizuku was developed for older android version and therefore I cannot install it, do I just need to wait for some time? Also, am I loosing my warranty when using both Essentials and/or Shizuku? I do have some experience with rooting (from 14 years ago lol), but if I understand correctly this is all just grating permission and not rooting per se, right?

2 I like the NFC toggle in the notification bar (seriously I don't get it how pixel UI just doesn't have it), but I would also like to have proper WiFi and data toggles (they're finally there on android 17 but are very broken), is it possible via Essentials, or would it be possible to add it for the future? (just a simple on/off toggle separately for WiFi and for data as we know from other UIs)

3 I'd like to be able to turn off my flashlight with a power button (as we do with Samsung or Xiaomi UIs), but I went through all the settings of Essentials and I couldn't find this there - is it possible to add this maybe for the future? There's remapping the buttons, but mine is a little bit different from that, right?
