What has been your shock transition from Kenya to abroad? For me it’s moving from a metric system to an imperial system and having to adapt very quickly as it fell right into my line of work. Here is a short skit to show the ridiculousness of it.

As the US celebrates its Independence Day, I can’t help but think of so many things it chose independence from including the metric system.

Other than the transition from LHD to RHD, which is not difficult TBH, work transition was a bit challenging. I work in HVAC, and while in Kenya I’d do mental calculations and estimations, I now have to add another layer of conversion. E.g. calculating for thermal units for temperature regulation, someone tells you something like we need a maximum of 80℉. So you convert it back to a centigrade scale ℃ then do your mental calculations, then convert back to Fahrenheit. And you’re probably mid conversation so you have to think on your feet.

What have been your culture shocks and adjustments?

Glasgow University to cut staff over decline in international students. IMHO this was a long time in coming due to the underappreciation/ poorly treatment of International students.

The University of Glasgow has opened a voluntary redundancy scheme over declining numbers of international students.
Principal Prof Andy Schofield said the financial environment was "becoming increasingly challenging" for universities.
BBC article here.

A similar situation is happening at the university of Sussex.

Let’s be real, a lot of times students go abroad for further education, sell the only family cow to pay exorbitant tuition fees, is also to look for opportunities in the same countries. Of late almost everyone has been systematically targeting immigrants, it was only a matter of time before they realized the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

Will it all work out?

One thing nobody tells you about making a decision that everyone disagrees with is how hard it becomes to silence the voices in your head afterward.

Moving out wasn't an easy choice. It wasn't something I did on a whim. I spent countless nights going back and forth, questioning myself, wondering if I was making the biggest mistake of my life.

But it was a decision that had to be made.  Some days I feel proud of myself for taking the leap. Other days, the fear creeps in and I start questioning everything all over again. Sometimes all you can do is trust yourself enough to keep moving, even when the doubts are loud and the road ahead isn't clear. May it work out in the End

Visa on arrival to Dubai only if you have US or UK residency. Is it preferential or discriminatory? Thoughts?

The UAE has introduced visa-on-arrival access for Kenyan passport holders with valid US or EU residence permits.
This policy applies to ordinary Kenyan passport holders and their eligible family members but
** **excludes other Kenyan citizens.

Preferential treatment only is you’re validated by the US or UK. Thoughts?

Fake Rings Ndio Pest Control ya Team Mafisi

The dating scene is wild everywhere, but Kanairo takes the cup.

Nimesoma feature kwa Daily Nation indicating that many Kenyan single women are now wearing wedding rings purely as a "pest control" measure to ward off aggressive men in public spaces.

Hii stori imenichekesha but pia it shows the crazy lengths watu wanaenda just to get some peace of mind in Nairobi. Huku Majuu, the dynamics are totally different but the hustle for peace is the same.

Ladies in the diaspora, do you experience the same aggressive approaches abroad, or is the dating culture more respectful? I know cultural differences play a massive role kwa hii mambo.

Let's discuss this below.

RACISM

Lately my YouTube, X (Twitter) and TikTok feeds have been flooded with racist content, and I'm trying to figure out whether this reflects what's actually happening or if the algorithms are amplifying it.

I've been seeing videos of people openly saying the N-word, clips of someone called "Chuck the Builder," who is basically a rage baiter, videos of a guy going to Sweden to ask white women why they prefer Black men, and another video of a white woman holding a baby while calling a young Black boy the N-word.

For people who are actually on the ground—especially in the U.S.—how accurate is this as a reflection of everyday life? Is racism becoming more openly expressed, or are social media algorithms simply pushing the most provocative content because it drives engagement?

Utumishi Girls School Fire Tragedy: Students Facing Murder Charges

The Kenyan government is set to aggressively charge students with murder over that incredibly deadly Utumishi Girls school fire incident.

Hii ni heavy news that highlights a very deep crisis within our boarding school system. The massive pressure placed on students in 254 is clearly leading to extreme, tragic outcomes. Kwa watu wa diaspora whose kids are in foreign school systems, the stark contrast in mental health support is incredibly glaring.

We must actively demand better psychological care and safer learning environments for our youth. Shida ya hizi mashule ni systemic negligence and overwhelming academic pressure but pia wazazi need to do their part and not let the schools raise their kids. Who is to blame?

May the families find true justice!

Hacks Za Ku-Survive Chaotic Remote Video Interviews

Wakuu, kusaka remote gigs from Majuu ama Kanairo inaweza kuwa very chaotic, especially the interview phase.

The biggest game-changer is creating a dedicated "interview space" that is strictly distraction-free, na ku-test audio na video protocols 30 minutes before the call. Pia, weka a master document with bullet points of your key achievements visible off-screen. It helps you stay focused badala ya ku-stammer ukijaribu ku-remember that complex project you did last year.

First impressions matter sana when competing globally. Piga luku safi, ensure background ni neat, and project absolute confidence. Hizi ni the small things that win you the contracts.

Tujengane!

Kenyan Woman Missing In Iraq

Mambo ya Gulf inaendelea kuwa ngori. The mystery deepens immensely as a Kenyan woman remains missing in Iraq for months.

The family is desperately seeking answers na embassy reports are conflicting. Hii inastress sana, especially kwa wasee wenye wana-hustle the Middle East. Security conditions huko are very volatile, na employers have too much power under the Kafala (ama ni Ufala?) system.

Kama uko huko ama you know someone working there, ensure unakuwa na close communication nao daily. Share location details with trusted family members. The Kenyan government needs to be more aggressive in tracking and protecting our citizens scattered in these high-risk zones.

Piga mboka, but prioritize your personal safety above everything else. Kaa rada mbaya sana!

Tax-Free Import Cap Has Been Raised

Finally some good news for those of us that send stuff home from time to time.

Kasongo has officially raised the tax-free import cap for Kenyans abroad up to Ksh 260,000. Hii ni massive win! For years, tumekuwa tukilipa exorbitant customs duties just for bringing laptops, phones, or clothes for family at JKIA.

This new limit inamaanisha unaweza ku-carry personal electronics or gifts legally without the airport officials kukuitisha "kakitu". It's a huge relief for the diaspora community. Make sure you read the fine print ndio u-understand exactly which items are covered.

Plan your holiday travel well and utilize this new concession properly.
