Hey everyone, thanks to the mods for allowing me to post.
I'm doing my university thesis and have picked adult loneliness as my subject and I'd like to test something specific: does matching people based on shared life experience create better and more lasting connections than matching based on not having anything in common? I'm looking for 20 people to take part in an 8 week email 'pen-pal' experiment split into two groups of 10 (A & B).
Group A will be matched with someone going through a similar life moment- loneliness, grief, new parenthood, redundancy, retirement, feeling unseen- and will get a conversation starter to open with and continuous prompts throughout the experiment to keep things going.
Group B will also be matched with someone at random, with no shared life context, no conversation starters and no prompts.
At the start and end, everyone will be asked to complete the UCLA loneliness test to see if there has been any change and I'll be tracking other KPI's along the way as well as collecting feedback at the end. It would really help me and it may also help you find someone worth keep in in touch with, so could end up being a win-win for us all (which would be amazing).
Everything other than writing your 'letters' will be done for you via email- no cost, no paper, no formal commitment beyond giving it a genuine go and I'll publish the results publicly whatever they show.

I’m a mid 20s South Asian guy and still settling into the city, so thought I’d see if anyone else is in a similar boat. I’ve been in the UK before, but never lived in England, so this still feels pretty new to me.
I work in deep tech stuff (happy to bore you with it if you’re into that 😂), like long walks, hiking/trekking, being outdoors in general, and also open to learning a new language. Haven’t explored much yet either, but definitely planning little trips to places like Winchester, Isle of Wight, and wherever else looks worth visiting.
I’m a bit introverted at first but pretty chill once I get comfortable. Mainly just looking to meet good people so I don’t end up spending every weekend indoors scrolling endlessly 💀

I have very recently started a new job in Newcastle, as a software dev. Since I moved here on my own, I don't know anyone (not that I had any friends before...). But this feels like a good time as any to start fresh and actually try, across many things in my life.
I'm not really going to try and diagnose myself and my problems, but I do have pretty damn bad anxiety around everyday social things, so it's hard for me to make friends "the normal way". So, trying to see if I can find anyone here from the north-east, as I do want to eventually find local irl friends.
Abot me, I mostly work and sleep these days. And haven't done much better before. I would say I am into gaming and anime, though they don't hit quite the same anymore. So, I'm definitely trying to gradually introduce new interests to my life, as I settle down.
I wish I was able to write a more interesting and exciting post about the prospect of being my friend. But I suppose I am hoping for someone in a similar situation to identify with.
