Hey everyone! Is there already a WhatsApp group or Discord server where we can practice residency interviews together?

If not, would anyone be interested in starting one? I’d be happy to set it up as well.

We can conduct mock interviews, give each other honest and constructive feedback, identify areas for improvement, and help each other become better communicators.

The goal isn’t just to reassure each other that we’re doing well. It’s to give honest feedback, challenge each other, and help each other improve.

Hello everyone!

For those who sent letters of interest (LOIs) and subsequently received interview invitations from those programs, could you please share your experience?

It would be incredibly helpful if you could share:

- What you included in the body of your LOI and how you phrased it.

- Whom you sent it to (Program Director, Associate Program Director, Program Coordinator, etc.).

- When you sent it and what time of day you emailed.

- Whether you followed up and, if so, how.

- Whether you had signaled the program or had any other connections to it.

- How long it took to receive an interview invitation after sending the LOI.

I’m an IMG with no interview invitations so far, despite signaling programs, and seeing invitations already going out has been incredibly stressful. I’m genuinely worried about having to go through the Match again, and I’m trying to do everything I reasonably can to improve my chances this season.

I know every applicant and program is different, and an LOI is never a guarantee, but hearing from people who have had success would mean so much. Please share as many specific details as you feel comfortable sharing. Even small details could be helpful to those of us in the same position.

Some movement with top IM PSTP already but others might be late October. Madness.

Hey everyone, feeling a bit cooked.
US MD applying academic IM only. Step 1 pass first attempt Step 2 250. Failed one preclinical course my first year on my MSPE (what I think is holding me back which is crazy because it’s an isolated fail 3 years ago)

Currently sitting at 3 Interview Invites, all silver signals. 2 of my golds and 2 of my silvers only send one of round of interviews that I have missed. 2 additional silvers were reaches where I’d be unlikely to interview. That just leaves 6 schools left and not gonna lie I’ve been obsessing over the fact that I only have a small amt of schools left to hear back from. Just off odds unlikely I’d be offered interviews at all 6.

I know it’s still early and things can change but I feel like it’s cooked. Any other US MDs applying IM, how many interviews do you all have?

3. how many programs did you apply to and have you sent an LOI to any of your programs or have you updated them on when your score would be out approximately?

I'm img applying for pediatrics and another specialty but I haven't received any interview yet . Is it ok not to receive any one till today?

2 LORs from US but neither are from pediatrics

I have 7 interviews so far, I feel like most programs have given out most their invite seats. How many more invites can I realistically expect? If you applied neuro last year can you please share thank you

I'm a visa requiring IMG here applied IM. I'm grateful to God for what I have been granted.

I just received an interview from an internal medicine program.

I was eleted until I read that this year they will be conducting interviews in person, which wasn't previously mentioned on their website.

I reached out to the PC to ask for a special consideration for a virtual option, but is there any other way of going about this?

Anyone else had a similar experience with any program?

Im a USDO student applying IM, have only gotten 1 IV so far. I passed level 1/2 on first attempts, level 2 415, no extensions or LOAs, 2 probations on record (conduct/disciplinary). I applied to 105 programs across the country. Should I be worried?

To be honest, i know i have a weak application for IM. But just asking if someone matched in IM with similar stats and if they did when did they start getting Interviews?

For reference, I’m applying peds and have 20+ interview invites. From what I’ve heard, interviews (esp peds) are mostly vibe checks. I plan on being professional, but I think it’s important to let my personality shine through.

I feel like all the videos I see about how to answer these interview questions seem so ingenuine and make all applicants sound the same (basically using any opportunity to really hype yourself up).

So ig my question is: do I truly need these long-winded, basically scripted answers, or can I just be myself even if my answers aren’t perfect?? Like is this truly just a vibe check and I’m safe-ish as long as I stay professional??

I genuinely don’t intend for this question to hurt, discourage, demotivate, or undermine anyone. It’s simply a doubt I’ve had for a while, and I’m sure many applicants who are going through this process have wondered the same thing.

What differentiates applicants who match from those who don’t?

I’ve seen applicants with 260+ scores, multiple publications, excellent USCEs, impressive CVs, and seemingly great interview skills still go unmatched.
On the other hand, I’ve also seen applicants with scores in the 240s, 1–2 publications, fairly standard USCEs, decent CVs, and good communication skills successfully match.
Of course, every applicant has a unique journey, and we can never know the complete picture from the outside. But it does make me wonder: what does it ultimately come down to?

Is it the way we signal programmes? The connections we build? How well we fit a programme’s culture and expectations? Our interview performance? The overall narrative of our application? Or, to some extent, simply luck?
And perhaps the most important question is: Are there any red flags or shortcomings in an application that can significantly reduce an applicant’s chances, regardless of how strong the rest of their profile looks?

What are the factors that applicants might overlook, the mistakes they might not even realise they’re making, or the weaknesses that could ultimately cost them a Match?
I’d genuinely love to hear perspectives from residents, applicants who have matched, and especially those who have served on selection committees or have first-hand experience with the process.

Not looking to compare or judge anyone’s journey, but to understand the process better and learn what we can realistically do to improve our chances.

When do you guys suggest canceling / turning down interviews.
I am at 15 for my dream specialty and 3 for my backup probably going to cancel my backup.
But how about for my specialty of choice? I failed two classes M1 so I terrified of not even matching in the first place so I feel so guilty and worried (because what happens if I don’t want to rank some) turning down an interview!!

A friend in tech recently mentioned that it’s common for job applicants in his industry to practice mock interviews with one another through platforms that match people together.

Is there anything equivalent for residency applicants?

If not, would anyone here be interested in pairing up for mock interviews? We could take turns interviewing each other and providing feedback. I’m applying to psychiatry, but I’d be happy to practice with applicants from other specialties as well.

I just received an invitation for an in-person interview at an FM program, and honestly, I was pretty surprised! I was under the impression that most programs were conducting virtual interviews these days.

I’m also currently outside the US, so an in-person interview would mean traveling internationally just for the interview.

Has anyone else received an in-person interview invitation this cycle? Are FM programs still doing these regularly, or is this unusual? I’d love to hear what others are experiencing!
