Bad support

Not sure how everyone here is gaga over matic’s support, I am having a terrible experience. I have to nudge them every few days to respond on next steps. I did reply to their founders’ recent messages on X and all they do is like it and move on like nothing’s happened. Their support email takes days to get back. Where is the ownership team Matic? How long before you can tell me what it will take to fix my robot? If anything at least communicate with your customers instead of leaving them wondering.

Regarding the economics of the bags...

My Matic arrives today and I'm super excited to see what all of the hype is about, but I've been doing some thinking since I pulled the trigger on my order about the financial aspects of the replaceable bags.

I subscribed to the unlimited bag program at $96/year. I plan on running the Matic exactly as I do my Roborock. Mop and vacuum my 300 square feet of downstairs tile every night. From my research I will go through at least 2 bags per week. Let's say that Matic's cost per bag is around $1 each to produce, they will ship me 12 at a time. This means that I will likely be going through at least $104 of bags per year, which will come in 4-5 shipments (at Matic's cost since they ship free to me), which is probably around $5-$10 each shipment.

How is this model sustainable? I realize that not all users might use as much as me, but I just don't see how Matic will be able to keep the unlimited bag program for the cost that it is now. Since the robot won't run without their proprietary bags, what is preventing it from becoming ewaste after a year or two if the bag replacement costs become unsustainable?

It would be nice to know my bag costs will remain somewhat fixed for the duration that I own the robot.

“Road Rash”

Anyone else’s Matic have some battle scars/road rash from it just not performing super gracefully at times??? Or is mine just the exception? 🫠

First 24 Hours

TLDR: Coming from a Roomba I8 this thing is a spaceship. Saying it’s more intelligent would be an insult. It’s not even in the same galaxy as my old Roomba. It does an excellent job, vacuuming and mopping. It doesn’t freak out my cats and set up was relatively a breeze.

I’ll start with my initial positive first impressions and then I’ll move into some things I would like to see improved.

Build quality: This thing is a tank. All the parts feel very high quality. All of the parts I interact with as a user have a reassuring heft and really feel like they are well machined. I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of time they spent getting the lid on the water tank exactly right. I wish they had that kind of lid on normal water bottles. It’s incredible that it has the exact right amount of detention while holding a perfect seal.

Everything from changing bags to getting out the roller to getting out, to accessing the beater brush feels very well thought out and well machined.

Putting the swivel wheel at the back was a very intelligent decision because it won’t get as clogged up with hair compared to having it on the front cough cough Roomba.

The main traction motors are very quiet and seem like they’re able to effortlessly propel the robot. I imagine the actual top speed of this thing is close to 10 miles an hour, but that would be kind of terrifying. I can tell they used significantly more powerful motors to drive the robot than it actually needs. I can see why they aren’t considering a second generation right away because they really spent a lot of engineering time making this thing in absolute unit.

Also compared to my Roomba, this thing is incredibly quiet and does not bump into things.

In terms of build quality, I have basically no complaints other than lack of user serviceability.

Software: in general, the app feels highly polished and well considered. I find the app easy to use perhaps a little light in settings. I would like to have the ability to dial in cleaning intensity for certain rooms on certain days for both vacuuming and mopping. I’m certain they’re working on this.

My home in general is an absolute nightmare for robot vacuum vacuums. I have a very atypical layout, strange thresholds, tight turns and corners in very narrow areas that must be cleaned. Generally, it does a very good job in navigating my home and has yet to get stuck anywhere. The biggest problem I have is there are some areas that get dirty that it just does not seem physically able to access if you look at the photo I posted you’ll notice that a pile of cat litter is on the right side of the litter box to the robots left, and it does not seem to want to pull straight into that spot.

It also staunchly refuses to automatically go under my bed. I bought risers to ensure that it would have about an inch of clearance and yet it will not navigate under their on its own. If I use the app and remote control it under my bed and then start a spot cleaning task. It will do it happily. I try to a few suggestions from this Reddit and also tried a couple of my own ideas, including starting a mapping task from under the bed to no avail. I put in a ticket along with a recording to show them what the problem is. I’m confident that this could be solved with a software update.

I can tell compared to a year ago that the navigation has improved significantly, but I would like to see a little bit more efficiency. It seems to have a little case of ADHD. It’ll start one spot do a bit of cleaning there and then move to another spot and then come back to that spot later I messed with some of the settings, including disabling the beta double pass mopping. Overall, it does vacuum and mop faster than my old Roomba and Bravva M6.

Matic Cues has a hard time seeing where I’m pointing in a small space like my bathroom. But again, I’m certain that with some more software updates, this will be improved.

Home assistant and purchase advice

Hi all, I’m very close to having narrowed down our robot vacuum choice to matic but I’m hoping to get some community feedback on a couple of points first.

  1. What is the home assistant/smart home integration like? I run everything on a home assistant server already and I’d like to have it jump cleaning into my other automations

  2. Odor issue realities. We’re a no pet, one toddler house hold with all vinyl wood flooring. I’m happy to change bags 1-4 weeks but I’m assuming we’re not a house hold that would put a lot of odor risk on matic in general?

Those are my main questions, otherwise does anyone know when or where stickers are available? I saw racing stripes on the website a few weeks ago but not anymore, and are there referral or promo codes, the main promotion I see currently seems to be the free bag subscription.

We’ve never had a robot vacuum before but I’m hoping matic is the time to jump in! Thanks

My feature wishlist after 6 months of Matic (pic related)

Now that Matic Cues are out, we should let the dev team rest, right? Wrong, I want them to keep cooking. Seems to me like the perfect time to ask for MORE.

I’ve been running my Matic for about 6 months and while I’m super impressed, I do have a list of features I'd like to see rolled out some time.

Most important:

- I hope to see alternatives to Aunt Fannie's. This one is huge for me. A lot of the ingredients in Aunt Fannie's aren't pet safe and despite what Aunt Fannie says I don't trust the ingredients even if they are really diluted. I have a cat with some health issues and I don't want to risk it. I've just been mopping with filtered water for now.

- Let us run or skip schedules ad-hoc. I have my schedules all dialed in, but it'd be nice to just tap a routine to trigger it whenever (like running my bathroom clean on demand) without editing the schedule. One of my routines runs while I'm usually at the gym and it'd be helpful if I could skip the routine easily if I'm also skipping the gym.

- Bigger run history maps. Sometimes I get a notification that a room was partially cleaned because something was in the way, but it's hard to tell where it actually went because the run history map in the app is tiny. If I could zoom in or expand it it'd be much easier to tell where it went.

Nice-to-haves:

- Having the bot lightly push or adjust doors so it can grab the dust bunnies that always pile up behind them.

- A private stats page. I want to see how many miles it's driven, how many bags I've used, and my cleaning time, etc...

- A true night mode to turn off the dock light and the screen light.

Bonus wishlist:

- Let me hold my Matic like Rafiki holds Simba so it can get a top-down view of my home. The 3D rendering of my home is awesome but it feels a little incomplete when there's just a void where my couch is. If I could Rafiki my Matic for a mapping session then it could have a more complete model of my home.

- Let me drive my Matic around and control it with an Xbox controller. I'm too old for RC cars but maybe it feels more justifiable playing with my Matic if it was vacuuming at the same time.

- Being able to check the camera feed in the app just to see the world from Matic's POV and check in on my pets/home while away.

- I want to be able to use my Matic's name as an activation word instead of Hey Matic.

P.S. If you don't have a Matic yet, don't let my wishlist discourage you. It's still the best robovac and app I've ever used. If you're buying one soon, make sure to use a referral link to get the free bag pass. Here's mine if you need one: https://referrals.maticrobots.com/maticrobots/u/MaticPromos?s=sp&t=cp&sub=maticrobots

~12 months in... my wishlist

We're just under a year in and thought I'd chime in w/ my wishlist (inspired by other recent posts)!

  1. A "trash compactor" - our primary use case is to stem the massive daily tide of fur accumulation generated by two lab / aussie (aussiedor) mixes. Alas, this (as is semi-regularly commented on) ends up w/ the bag appearing to be full when it really just needs someone to tamp down / compress the fur buildup. Future HW (or even better a retrofit) would mechanically compact it to extend the lives of the bags. For now, I usually pull the bag out and press it down manually for a few cycles before it really does resemble full.
  2. Options to define a 2nd type of hard floor surface. Since the cleaning solution held in the reservoir often has specificity to the type of floor (e.g. either hardwood or tile surfaces in our case), I want to be able to selectively mop only the portions of the hard floor that's appropriate for the kind of solution that's present. One should be able to define certain areas as hardwood, others as tile, etc.
  3. An option to completely turn off (or dim to 0 after a period) all LEDs on both the device and the dock while idle or charging to prevent nighttime light pollution.
  4. My Matic isn't named Matic. I want to be able to define my own custom wake word. E.g. Hey "Obi-Wan Cleanobi," go do X.
  5. Networking & sleep - the device is often slow to wake when first opening the app (it indicates it can't connect erroneously). It does sort itself out after a while — so connectivity isn't really the problem. The UI just reports "can't connect" when what it actually means is "still waking up."
  6. Network "Reachability" - my home network has two VLANs to separate IoT devices from laptops and such (and I realize this might not be the common case). I'd like to be able to place the Matic on one network and have my phones on another. Lots of things don't work in this scenario unfortunately. I assume the root of it may be that discovery is mDNS-based and won't cross subnet boundaries — mDNS reflection / repeating gets me partway there, but not all the way. An explicit "connect by IP or hostname" fallback could solve it for those willing to assign a static address.
  7. Perhaps this is supported by some means already I'm not aware of, but I really hate to have to rebuild and relabel the map every time I send the device in for service or need to reset it. Of course I'm sure the goal is to focus on addressing any / all scenarios where that'd be required... but I would like to be able to "offsite" a backup of the map. I've seen the following... but it begs the question, why not an official SDK? https://github.com/Burgess-Software/unofficial-matic-sdk
  8. Allow editing of the map, room boundaries, & labels from a laptop by some means. My clumsy fingers struggle to draw precise boundaries through the capacitive touch screen. I'm far better w/ a mouse cursor.
  9. A stable, documented, & versioned API to automate against — ideally including an MCP server, so it's usable directly from AI assistants and agent tooling. I'm aware of some of the community work around Home Assistant automation — e.g. https://github.com/ProspectOre/matic-home-assistant — and I genuinely value that it's local-only and agree w/ it as the right default (from a security & privacy perspective). But its Bluetooth pairing requirement is a non-starter for me for several reasons - among them it assumes a machine that's physically near enough the robot and has a BT adapter... An official Matic local API would fix that for the community integration too, rather than leaving it to reverse-engineer a protocol updates will inevitably break.
  10. Separately, an opt-in hosted API gateway. Local-first should stay the default — but I want the option of remote access, so it doesn't matter where I am when I urgently need to clean the kitchen floor.
  11. I look forward to future HW that can traverse stairs :-)

And FWIW, I suspect Matic's early adopter audience might include more than a few folks that are well equipped and would be happy to contribute PRs were some parts of this made OSS.

Sink Summon

While I love sink summon (when I am home), I don’t love it so much when I’m not. Rosie only goes and sits for 15 minutes and then goes home. Really, Rosie? How rude!

Feature request….it could be a setting that users can turn on or off: when Matic knows it’s low on water before the next run, just go sit at the sink and stay there. That way, I will obviously see it and Rosie won’t stop mopping when I’m away from house. 3 times now I’ve forgotten to fill her and my floors don’t get mopped because I wasn’t home to fill her.

Maybe this is just a me problem. Lol

Edge Vacuuming

How well does the Matic do in edge vacuuming? I have a cat and I’ve noticed his hair starts to pile up near the edge of walls and trim and my current robot vacuum doesn’t pick up on it well. Would a matic do well in an environment like this? Super tempted to order one

Auto brush roll check

I took the brush roll out to clean the ends of it earlier today, and once I had the brush roll reinstalled, the Matic automatically performed a brush roll check by spinning it and lowering the cleaning head to the ground while spinning as well. It said it was doing this on the display. Not sure when this feature was added, but I thought it was really cool and wanted to say thanks Matic for the thoughtful little update! 😊

Introducing Cues: Voice & Gesture control for Matic

This is the moment. 9 years in the making. What we've been building toward since 2017. We raised $115M and spent 9 years to make the world’s first intuitive home robot

Today we rolled out Matic Cues. A truly intelligent robot should learn how humans naturally communicate, instead of asking humans to learn yet another interface.

Matic is now the first home robot to understand 70+ spoken languages and human body language, including pointing at a mess on the floor.

Humans have understood each other through cues for 200,000 years.

Academia spent decades on human-to-robot interaction. we think the answer was always simpler: the best way to talk to a robot is the same way we talk to each other.

This matters most for families. a family isn't just app-savvy adults. it's kids. grandparents. people who don't speak English. people who just don't want another app.

Cues means anyone can use Matic.

Say you spilled coffee: Point to the spill and say, "Hey Matic, clean this" and it will hear, see, locate in 3D, and go clean on its own.

Matic comes with a lot of features:

  1. Say "Hey Matic" - it locates your voice, turns, and looks at you
  2. Say "Hey Matic, follow me" and start walking. Matic will follow behind
  3. Say "Hey Matic, go clean the living room". Since it knows your house map, it navigates and just does it

It's so easy, a 5 year old and an 80 year old can use it and it understands 75 different languages.

Matic has 8x the airflow, specialised cleaning algorithms for rugs, corners, toekicks, mopping, etc and cleans better than any other robot vacuum.
Also keeps improving with software updates.

13,000 families use and love Matic.
WIRED magazine gave it a 10/10 (the only hardware to receive this rating in a decade)

For Matic Customers -> Go to App -> Settings -> Matic Cues. -> Discover Commands

Just ordered and had a few questions

I have been in the market for a new robot to replace my aging QRevo, and was very impressed with the software update yesterday and decided to pull the trigger given the generous trial period. I had some questions that was hoping the community could answer that could put my mind at ease with my purchase:

  • I have all tile floors downstairs and currently run my mop and vacuum daily. According to the app it is under 300 square feet of actual mopping every day. I usually have to empty my dirty water tank and fill the clean water twice a week. I'm a bit concerned about how many bags and water I will be using, do you know about how often I'll have to perform this maintenance?
  • The other companies make a big deal about how they clean the mop pad with hot water after running. The downside of not having a dock is that there doesn't seem to be a way to clean the roller. For those who mop daily, is this a legitimate concern?
  • Regarding obstacle avoidance - I was tired of my mop getting stuck on various items in my downstairs. Will it be able to avoid smaller objects such as backpack straps, etc on the floor?
  • Before making the decision to try the Matic, I bough a Narwal Flow 2 (had to return it due to it getting a "wheels stuck" on normal carpet, and I have a Eufy Omni S2 that is still within my return period. For those who had another flagship robo vac, is there anything that you see that Matic does not do as well as those other models?

Thank you in advance and I'm looking forward to receiving the Matic!

Aunt Fannie’s packet says 8 mL, but Matic says 5 mL max. Which is correct?

My included Aunt Fannie’s sample packet says to use the full 8 mL packet, but my Matic manual says 5 mL/half a cap, and the current support page says 5 mL is the maximum per full tank. Are the included packets a different concentration from the retail Aunt Fannie’s cleaner, or has the recommended dose changed?

Matic please clean just the carpets in this room

Just about every other day I have matic clean this rug in my den because my kids make a bit of a mess but there's no way for me to just say clean the rug.

Matic knows that this is where the rug is because of the floor detection. It'd be really nice if instead of me having to paint that spot every time I could say clean the carpets in this room. Or do just the hard floors in this room.

Dreams :)

I don't want my kid to talk to Matic

So I love the new voice activated feature. Super cool made me really happy and I immediately realized that my 4-year-old son is going to abuse this. Is there any way that we can get like a voice print identification in the future??

I had early access to Hey Matic AMA. tl;dr it's delightful

I was lucky enough to get early access to the Hey Matic Cues this week. Have to say, this feature is such a subtle game changer.

I made a mess on the floor trimming my cat's claws and being able to tell Matic exactly where to vacuum up is SO COOL!

I also love that I can be at the sink washing up and can just call Matic over for a water tank top-up without getting my phone out. It feels so seamless.

The understanding of voice commands feels intuitive. I can tell it "clean my bathrooms" and it gets to work on BOTH bathrooms which I honestly didn't expect.

Also, if anyone was really paying attention, the founders have been working towards this feature for a long time. They talked about it in this 2023 Verge article.
