Looking for a travel buddy for journey across Mauritania & the Iron Ore Train (October 2026)

Hi everyone!

I'm Julian, 21, from near Frankfurt, Germany.

I'm planning a trip to Mauritania around 1–15 October 2026. The main reason is, of course, the famous Iron Ore Train, but I'd also like to explore Nouadhibou, Nouakchott and experience the country's unique landscapes and culture.

I enjoy photography, adventure, meeting new people and travelling on a reasonable budget. I'm easy-going, flexible and much prefer sharing experiences with one like-minded travel buddy than travelling in a large group.

It would be great to find someone around my age who enjoys good conversations, spontaneous adventures and wants to make this an unforgettable trip. Splitting some costs is a bonus, but having good company is the main reason I'm looking for a travel partner.

If you're planning a similar trip around the same time, send me a message. Maybe we can plan parts of the journey together!

How come Mauritania is almost always excluded from maps of North Africa?

This has been really confusing for me especially as i was growing up as a Mauritanian because whenever I was in the States and I said I am North African, i was told I wasn’t. Yet when i was in North Africa it was just fact. I looked into it and it seems like this is due to the French colonial boundaries in 1904 that removed Mauritania from the North and grouped it with the West. When Mauritania gained independence in 1960, the UN just built its modern regions on top of the colonial blocs made by the French for convenience. I think this could also have something to do with skin color as I notice other lighter Mauritanians don’t have this experience of being told they are not North African and that there is no chance they are Amazigh. If anyone has any knowledge about this I’d love to know

Best hotels + best way to travel from airport to city centre?

Hello, I am a Brit thinking about travel plans and am considering Mauritania (Nouakchott) to see some local culture, traditions and history.

Firstly, does anybody have any hotel recommendation? Ideally lower budget but I don’t mind paying a bit more for comfort. Ideally in the city centre or on the coast.

Secondly, what is the best way to travel from the airport to city centre? I am aware that quality of cars in Mauritania is questionable, and am definitely not wanting to drive myself if I don’t have to. Does Uber (or similar lift-sharing service) exist in Nouakchott? If not, are there any buses or charter taxis or anything?

Thank you for the advice!

Camel Market questions

Hey. I’m visiting Mauritania for the first time in August. I’d like to visit the camel market but got a few questions.

I’ve heard of ClassRide (a sort of Mauritanian Uber clone from what I can tell.) Would I be able to get it back from the camel market? (I assume it would be easier to get one actually going out!)

I’ve travelled elsewhere in Africa and they’ve been really uncomfortable with cameras. I assume some strange looking foreigner walking up and shoving a camera in your camel’s face would look a bit odd but are they ok with discreet pics from a distance?

Thanks!

Worth a visit for learning about slavery?

Hi

Sorry if this is insensitive but I've been very interested in late stage Islamic slavery, of which I've learnt Marituania still has remnants of. I'm from Britain of Pakistani heritage.

Do you know of anyone I can zoom chat with to get more information to see if it's worth visiting to learn more?

Getting from Dakhla to Mauritania — Supratours Bus (recommended)

Option 1: Supratours Bus (recommended)

  • Departs from Supratours office in Dakhla at 08:00
  • ~370 km to Guerguerat border
  • Arrives border around 13:00
  • The bus ferries you across No Man's Land (unpaved, ~5 km)
  • Arrives Nouadhibou ~17:00 Mauritania time
  • Book the day before — seats fill up fast

Option 2: Shared taxi / Grand taxi

  • Negotiate from Dakhla city centre
  • More flexible timing but more expensive

Option 3: Private transfer

  • Hotels in Dakhla can arrange
  • Most expensive but most comfortable

Border tips (Guerguerat → PK55)

  • 55 EUR cash EXACT for visa on arrival — no change given
  • Bring yellow fever vaccination card
  • "Fiche" — 30-40 photocopies of your passport, both sides
  • Don't buy SIM at the border — overpriced. Buy Mauritel in Nouadhibou instead
  • -1 hour time difference entering Mauritania

I crossed this exact route in March 2026 as part of a 19-day overland expedition from Marrakech to Nouakchott. Just uploaded the Morocco leg (Toubkal summit 4,167m), Mauritania episodes dropping soon — iron ore train, Chinguetti, the border crossing itself.

Happy to answer any questions about the crossing, the train, or the route.

Transportation to Bir Moghrein

Hello, I am a traveller from Eastern Europe, and last year I went by autostop from my town of Ubľa to the Noadhibou. I want to visit Mauritania again and I travelled a lot in Western Sahara (which wasn't very safe because of political situation) and I visited Aousserd. Local man told me lot of people when war started found refuge in Tindouf, Bir Moghrein and Zoueráte. I will certainly get to Zoueráte easily and safely, but I want to visit Bir Moghrein. Is it possible? Are there many trucks going, which I could hitchhike, or some shared taxis? How is it with safety? Thank you very much and peace be upon you
