Brass tankard

Brass tankard

Hey, I ordered this tankard off of Vinted, asked the guy if it was suitable for drinking or just decoration and he said it’s been drunk from before and just needed a clean. Well, it came and there was a dead spider in it still and in rough state. I really want to be able to drink from this tankard for my DnD games but I don’t feel safe drinking from it.

I’ve already had a good go at it with lime juice and baking soda with a microfibre cloth and it definitely looks better but I still wouldn’t drink from it.

Any advise greatly appreciated, I considered using it more as a can holder and still drinking from a can but I still want to give it another go.

The photo is when I first got it before I cleaned it a little, I’ll post the current state down in the comments

Mirror finish on aluminum 6061

Hi everyone. Do you know if it's possible to polish 6061 aluminum to a mirror finish? I'm trying to make a pendant. I've tried sanding in circles, sanding with the grain, and cross-sanding. I've sanded all the way up to 2000-grit. I always make sure to thoroughly clean both the piece and the sandpaper before sanding. I've polished both by hand and with a bench polisher. I've used Dialux Orange, Tripoli, and white polishing compounds, but none of them remove the 2000-grit sanding marks (using the bench polisher). Nothing has worked for me. Even though the scratches are parallel, they are still far too visible. I'm starting to think a mirror finish on aluminum isn't achievable. Should I try BlueMagic or some kind of car polish?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Help restoring this table

I recently got this Chromcraft table for free. Thought it was a score and oh I could just give it a good wipe. Ummm NO. I have no clue what I'm doing. I have no tools. Please lead me in the right direction to shine this up. Or if its even fixable. Last photo is what it's supposed to look like.

The white gunk is hard all over. Also what are those darker gray specks? they are rough to the touch.

I tried the aluminum foil ball trick but it seems to only be laying gray colored power on the white stuff not taking it off.

What am I doing wrong?

Bought the starter kit from spectrum. Grey, yellow, white wheels with 439,p14, and 480 compounds. Sanded 600 and 800. Still getting some scratches near the top of my tank. The clients don’t care about pitting I’m just more looking for a clearer tank free of scratches.

Permanently sealing heat patina on stainless steel without altering the colour -- any sustainable options?

Hi everyone! I'm working on a lighting project where the finish is heat patina on stainless steel, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to seal it permanently without muting or shifting the colours.

For context, the iridescent blues, golds, and purples you get from heat-treating stainless are the whole point of this piece, so I need something that locks them in without adding any visual interference.

Polishing compound noob

First time at giving a "high" polish a ago. It's a fun side project for myself so I got some cheap compound and a pad for my small drill off Amazon.

Basically wondering if the quality of the products is screwing me here. (Obviously not expecting amazing performance from Amazon)

The compound "brick" is really hard to the point I have to heat it gently with a lighter to get it soft enough to apply it to the pad.

Then as soon as I start to polish it seems like it either dries up and falls off the pad basically instantly or gums itself up into a smudge on the metal.

Is this normal behaviour for compounds? It seems like it's working but very slowly and with constant top ups to the pad.

Thank you for your time 🙂

(In the picture I'm only trying to polish the outer flat face on the barrel and outer rim of the wheel. You can see the dusty compound from maybe a minute of polishing)

Tips for polishing a brass lamp stand

Hi,

I just spent the last hour polishing this lamp stand that I got from the salvos, is there anyway to improve the polish at the top?

Is it just the texture of the brass and will be a bit darker no matter what?

Any tips or advice will be appreciated!

Thankyou

does scraping metal before polishing actually make a big difference

So I've been sourcing raw metals for some product prototypes lately, and I started experimenting with scraping and prepping the metal myself before any polishing happens. Honestly it changes the whole outcome. The surface ends up way more consistent and the polish actually grabs evenly instead of fighting you the whole time.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole looking for suppliers who offer quality raw stock that's worth the effort to prep and polish properly.

Curious if anyone here has strong opinions on whether scraping before polishing makes a real difference or if it's just extra work I'm adding for no reason. Also what grits are you starting at when the surface is pretty rough to begin with?

Trying to polish my plenum, any advice?

I’m still at 120 grit should I move up or keep going for a bit more? And anything that could help me do this a bit faster, any suggestions or advice appreciated

So sanding blasted this area, and hit it with 60 grit, still same results, these little specs, aluminum

Just trying to get this HRE 3 piece wheel as clean as I can, this is an inside barrel so it had a tun of junk in it

Question

I was sanding down these wheels at work this week and it reminded me how I wanted to start polishing wheels last year whether that be as a hobby or side job, What products do you guys reccomend? Is it worth it to get stuff from the renegade company or should I look elsewhere
