Mildred is my favorite character

Spoilers!

I think all the characters in the show are great but Mildred always stood out to me. I love how she is one of the smartest people when it comes to the church, particularly on Good Friday. She had been going since day 1 so of course she would be able to pick up on the fact that it had turned into some cult. The way she tells Sarah to never go back again was amazing too. She's also a character that takes accountability for her actions while John didn't really. The thing about John that made me upset is that he brought this creature back to the island because he didn't want Mildred to die, and I understand, that's the love of your life. But the problem I had with it is that he didn't put any consideration into the fact that she wouldn't have wanted that. It honestly felt kind of selfish of him in a weird way. Especially how he kind of guilt tripped her in episode 7 by being like, we shoulda ran away together. Something that I love that Mildred said here though was that they made their choices and life went on, and that she wasn't going to ruin his or her husband or her daughters life over that. She very obviously embraced that fact that this chapter of her life was over and that she was soon going to die. John never did though, and it drove me nuts.

Episode 5 warped door frame.

So, I can't help but notice that the door frame, the wood boards and everything is warped or sort of crooked. This makes it a bit uncomfortable to watch, but seems intentional. Is there an official source for this stylistic detail?

Ignore my own wood boards behind the monitor.

I just started episode 4, my take so far.

I REALLY hate it when there's a sick monologue going, and they do these weird jump cuts to a different angle every few seconds just to keep it entertaining I guess? The monologues are FANTASTIC. The AA scenes in the auditorium with Riley and Paul, Leeza confronting Joe after she can walk, even Riley's mom just talking in the first episode about random stuff while Riley is sitting down in the kitchen is fun to absorb.

I find the character Bev Keane admirable. I really like her character.

What I don't like is how the show is wasting what could have been someone interesting and turned her into a religious zealot trope. We hate her because she's the annoying bible thumper bigot that scoffs at the Muslims. What a waste.

Really fun show, I haven't been this entertained in a while. Can't wait to finish it. The episodes are REALLY long and feel like each their own little season.

And of course, this show is getting me into Neil Diamond. haha. I love the use of music in this show!! I have Holly Holy on repeat.

The Angel / Lucifer by Von Stuck

This is the painting Lucifer by Franz Von Stuck. I just started watching this series (finally) and I immediately thought of this the first time we see the Angel in the cave. I realize in the show he might not literally be Lucifer himself.

I have seen this painting in person as a part of the Crime and Punishment show at Centre Pompidou many years ago. It's huge and menacing.

Just watched 2 episodes and it's getting a bit slow. Does it get better?

Hi, just recently started watching. Feel like I could really enjoy this show but it's dragging quite a bit slow. Does it get better or does it continue this way?

Five Years

The destruction of Crockett Island was one of the greater mysteries of the early millennium. A massive fire, exsanguinated bodies, and a thin layer of ash coating the town that wasn't from burning buildings or grasslands. Rumors swirled across the world, countless investigations both public and private swept the island, but no conclusive answer was ever discovered, as no witnesses came forward.

The state erected a memorial that greeted the sun every morning, shining brass with the names of those lost in the flames and chaos. Five years on, the island was uninhabited. A series of nor'easters and bomb cyclones buried the remaining buildings in snow, and now the few remnants of human habitation stood amidst green life renewed by the ashes permeating the soil.

It was morning. A small boat arrived on the shore the morning after a rainy night. The docks were gone, and gray sands stuck to the fisherman boots plunging into them. The boat was tied to a post.

The walk into town wasn't long, Warren knew it like the back of his hand. The young man scratched at his scraggly beard and looked over the grassland that was once a struggling fishing village, and then marched onwards, to where the old church once stood.

There it stood. A monument to Riley, Ms. Erin, Sheriff Hassan and Ali, Ms. Sarah, the Flynns, Monsignor Paul and Ms. Mildred, and even the awful Ms. Bev. Mother Mary stood in stone and grace, with a large bronze placard below her. Warren reached into his jacket and placed a bouquet of plastic wrapped flowers at the foot of the statue.

He wasn't going to return to Crockett Island again. He knew it. Leeza came with him the last time, before the storms, but couldn't do it again. Warren wasn't sure why he returned. For a moment, he was there on the boat, watching the sun rise, seeing that screaming thing face mortality in the eastern sky. The world outside since then didn't make much sense, not like it did before Monsignor Paul returned.

He shut his eyes and exhaled, and looked up to Mary's stone eyes.

He searched for something, and he wasn't quite sure what. He remembered that morning like it happened an hour ago. The heat from the flames, the singing of the faithful who had accepted their deaths that haunted him every night for the past five years. The man cried silently. Angels to beckon thee, nearer my god to thee.

He knelt and bowed his head, and wept, doubling over to bury his fingertips into the blackened soil.

With a last heavy sigh, he stood once more, and wiped his eyes on his sleeve. The wind blew through his messy hair. All was quiet, all was tranquil. It felt as if he'd let a weight off his chest for the first time in his life. He shoved his hands into his pockets and made his way back to the path towards the town, and paced along the cracked asphalt streets back towards the beach.

The waves lapped at the sands of Crockett Island, and the wind swept through the grassland, past an abandoned trailer and over old rusted remnants of the world that was. Warren returned home to the life he'd made, and left Crockett behind.

Rahul Kohli popping up

I was watching Citadel on Prime Video the other day and Rahul Kohli pops up in the third episode of Season 2 with some absolutely hilarious scenes. He's so good and seeing him always makes me think of Midnight Mass.
