Motorola Ion

Does anyone have any experience with the Ion in a small business environment? I work for an IT department at a small/medium business, and our facilities team is looking for a new "device". They currently use XPR 3300e UHF radios, and want to expand so they can have mobile apps for things like ticketing/cameras/messaging on one device. They don't want something as bulky as a full tablet or laptop, and from my research the Ion seems like a good choice for durability as well as maintaining the same form factor.

We have a vendor who is telling us the Ions are unreliable and Motorola is considering discontinuing them? They can't elaborate on why they're unreliable, which makes me skeptical.

Thanks in advance for any experience/tips yall can share!

Transmission problems

I have an APX7000xe that I use for public safety purposes running both vhf and uhf. I have always had transmission issues and was told by a dealer that it’s because I had the wrong antenna. I recently purchased a new one that I thought was the correct one however am still having issues. Power and everything works fine as confirmed by the dealer. The antenna I got is the one linked below. Could I be still using the wrong antenna or could it be a different problem.

APX 8500 not receiving Repeated channels

I have an APX 8500 Mobile with an E5 control head that’s only a year or two old, and it’s been having issues receiving repeated channels, but it receives direct/simplex channels just fine. I checked the code plug and everything matches up. I also checked if it was a monitor issue, but it wasn’t.

Motorola R7 Different Antennas

Does anyone know what the part numbers are for the two different antennas - 8/900MHz antennas - for R7? Are there two different order numbers? I'm based in Canada and found out that we have 2 different antenna lengths and tunings..

XTS5000 & RSM "RMN5038A" - Emergency Button Help

Hi All,

I've got a bunch of XTS5000's and RMN 5038A's that I've acquired. I'm running into an issue now where while the PTT button works, the top emergency button does not. It only lights up the screen, with no sound.

Everything works with a Commander II RSM, but not these ones. Gemini is telling me that its not possible, and that it was for the old MT serries, but I got this from a federal police service, so I would imagine that they would not accept that the emergency button would not work.

I look forward to your seasoned advice 😄

MotoTRBO issues

Hi all, am just messing around with my DP3400 and DP4801e UHF portables and have come across an issue, I’ve setup “test” digital channels on both radios, both on same frequency, same group call ID same rx group members same time slot, colour code etc. when I key up my 3400 my 4801e receives perfectly, when I key up the 4801e my 3400 shows a green rx light but no transmission comes through, I’ve checked through everything and I can’t fix this issue, I remember a while ago this was never an issue but I must’ve done something to wreck it. Please help

Mobile Radio Install

Installed an 8500 on my F-150. Process was easier than I thought it would be. If y'all are looking to do something similar to your F-150 and have questions ask away.

XTS5K long writing time

I bought a new XTS5K model III. I have ADP and FPP on it. It's taking at least 8 minutes to write the codeplug to the radio. Is this normal?

My XTS2500 III with ADP and FPP does not take longer than 40 seconds.

Taking a radio through TSA, what's your experience?

There may come up a use case where some of my people may need to take a radio with them while traveling. A radio tech I know at another organization made a comment once about traveling with two radios and that being a bit of a hassle with TSA. So for those of you who travel and carry a radio in addition to one or more cell phones (personal and work cells) and maybe a laptop too. Any issues going through TSA?

Is it encryption? Is it the radio?

Our organization has utilized UHF DMR for a number of years. Recently we opted to add encryption (low level ADP) onto all of our talkgroups. We successfully programmed every radio with the same codeplug, but have started noticing issues. Many individuals say that they try to answer someone when they called them but they cannot hear them. Other individuals state that no one can hear them when they call others. Each time they are getting a grant from the repeater.

These are Motorola XPR7550e radios with a single site.

Thanks in advance.

DM4601e problem as control station

Hi, I have a DM4601e as a control station and I use software for GPS tracking. I have noticed that sometimes (very often) my radio disconnects from my PC. I have checked the windows energy saver but nothing. I have noticed that if I ping the radio at all times (ping -t 192.168.11.1) the radio doesn't disconnect at all, but I can't get the GPS data on the software. What can it be?

Replace business repeater

A friend of mine runs a landscaping company and their Vertex Standard VXR-7000u repeater died. Any suggestions on a replacement? It looks like Motorola has a VXR-7000 but the local dealer won’t return phone calls.

Pet project - At-home Motorola Talkabout Pager system

Hello everyone,

My girlfriend recently picked up two Motorola Talkabout pagers from a surplus as a thoughtful gift because of my interests. It was cool to see that they both power on with no issue, but they are long-deprecated and I wanted to surprise her to see if there's a way to get these old things working again to talk to each other.

I have one that was serviced by WebLink and the other from Metrocall. This is before my time so forgive me but my understanding is that these will not work under any circumstances unless somehow I were to create my own 'network' involving something short of a Raspberry Pi, some open-source GitHub project, and intertwined with hopes and dreams which would recognize another registered device. In a sorts, opening my own local 'Metrocall' or 'WebLink' system.

Is this worth even trying for fun, or is this biting off more than I can chew? Either way, I'd love some pointers on what I'd need to do.

Thank you!
