More than 100,000 people have been killed across all sides in Myanmar since a military coup five years ago triggered civil war, a conflict monitor said Wednesday.
Since the February 2021 putsch there have been 100,114 “conflict-related fatalities” according to Sun Mon Thant, a senior analyst from Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED), which tallies media reports of violence.
There is no official toll and estimates vary widely, but analysts regard the half-decade civil war as the deadliest active conflict in Asia.
The military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, detaining the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and ending Myanmar’s decade-long experiment with democracy.
Security forces put down anti-putsch protests but activists quit the cities to form pro-democracy guerrilla groups, fighting alongside ethnic minority armies which have long resisted central rule.
Speculation is that this is part of the Tat's annual Sea Shield/3D Navy exercise, and that it comes from Mawyawadi Naval Base
>Comrade Ni Ni Kyaw stated that despite geopolitical rumors, the PLA has operating under absolute financial autonomy. “We have not received a single Chinese yuan from Beijing, nor have we accepted one Thai baht, an Indian rupee, or a single US dollar from Western administrations,” the general secretary clarified, defending the political integrity of the communist insurgent force.
[I thought Ni Ni Kyaw stepped down as spokesperson. Also, who is claiming CPB PLA is receiving support from Beijing? Pro-Tat lobbyists?]
A son has publicly challenged the Natmauk Township People's Defence Force (Pa Ka Pha) to provide evidence supporting its claim that his 46-year-old mother, Daw Zin May Htun , was a Myanmar military informant before the group shot and killed her in May 2026.
According to the family, she was taken from her home in Nalat Khat Pin Village on May 15 by Natmauk Pa Ka Pha Battalion 4 and was killed two days later. Her son says the group offered no explanation at the time and only released a statement more than a month later, after family members began raising questions on social media.
The son insists that if his mother truly worked as a military informant, the group should produce concrete evidence, including records of any communications with the military. He also disputes allegations that she refused to sell food to resistance fighters or collaborated with the military.
Natmauk Pa Ka Pha previously stated that Daw Zin May Htun had ties to the military, provided intelligence that led to arrests, arson, and drone strikes, and was warned before being "cleared" after failing to comply with their instructions. The group also says it only confiscated her phone and motorcycle.
The family, however, says four mobile phones, jewelry, a wallet, national ID, 800,000 kyats from cash, KBZ Pay account funds, and a motorcycle were taken and have not been returned. They say they are seeking evidence to clear her name rather than recover the property.
Their Headquarter is in Sukali if I am not mistaken and they hold also territory in Waw lay Panhandle.
After the Arakan Army successively captured Point 288, Point 188, and Point 148 hills in Ngayokekaung Township, Ayeyarwady Region on June 17, 19, and 21, 2026, fighting has continued daily in the surrounding areas. The junta has been reinforcing its forces in an effort to recapture these positions, launching relentless offensives.
The enemy has been reinforcing from Artillery Battalion 344 and Pathein-based battalions, while also strengthening its forces on all four sides. Simultaneously, they are conducting operations to secure the Pathein-Monywa road, deploying large numbers of troops to establish positions along the route.
The junta has continued intense attacks on AA positions using long-range artillery, airstrikes, and suicide drones, keeping the fighting intense.
On July 2 and 3, 2026, the Arakan Army successfully captured two outpost hills belonging to the junta's Point 227 hill in Ngayokekaung Township, Ayeyarwady Region, despite ongoing enemy counterattacks.
Details of the captures:
· July 2, 2026: Captured the first outpost hill located approximately 1.1 km west of Point 227 hill.
· July 3, 2026: Captured the second outpost hill (tower base hill) located approximately 1 km from Point 227 hill.
During these hill capture operations, enemy bodies and some weapons and ammunition were seized. The AA is currently pursuing and mopping up remnants of Battalion 108 (under Division 66) who are fleeing in disarray toward Point 227 hill with heavy casualties.
