On this day in NASCAR History, August 19, 2001: A Dodge goes to Victory Lane for the first time since 1977 as Sterling Marlin, driving the No. 40 for Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, wins the Pepsi 400 at Michigan. It is also the 7th Cup win of Marlin's career.
This would be Sterling's first win since the 1996 Pepsi 400 at Daytona, snapping a 5 year dry spell. For those of you who were not around or may have forgotten, this was not a super popular win, as many fans at the time still unfairly blamed Marlin for Earnhardt's fatal crash.
Ricky Craven had a notably strong race as well, qualifying the PPI Motorsports No. 32 Ford on the Pole and finishing 2nd, while Bill Elliott finished 3rd in the Evernham Motorsports No. 9 Dodge.
Bob McIntire on a Norton.
What more could you say?
Is this video, courtesy of Duke Video via YouTube, from way back in the day when, ahem, "Men were men and sheep were scared...", or a more gentle time from where we are now, lookin' through rose tinted racing goggles at classic races at the height of their prowess all those years ago? I wonder...........
Jim Paschal in the Petty Enterprises No. 42 and Jack Smith in the No. 47, both Plymouths, race by the No. 87 Pontiac of Buck Baker during the Mountaineer 300 at West Virginia International Speedway. Baker would rally to finish 5th. August 18, 1963

Mark Martin's 1995 First Union 400 at North Wilkesboro driver side door panel.
One of my favorite pieces in my Mark Martin collection is this driver side panel from his 3rd place finish in the First Union 400 at North Wilkesboro, he finished behind Dale Sr. and Jeff Gordon. Killer piece to have in my collection.
Joe Weatherly driving the Bud Moore owned No. 8 Pontiac on the inside of Richard Petty in the Petty Enterprises No. 43 Plymouth in 1962. Weatherly won 9 races that year, and the Championship. Petty won 8, and finished second in the standings.
August 17, 1991: Dale Jarrett in the Wood Bros. No. 21 beats Davey Allison in the Robert Yates Racing No. 28 and wins the 1991 Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan. It is the first of Dale Jarrett's 32 Cup Series wins.
On this day in NASCAR History, August 17, 1986: David Pearson, winner of 105 Cup Series races, makes his 574th and final start. Driving his own No. 21 Chevy (the Wood Bros. were using the No, 7 at the time) he would finish 10th in the 1986 Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan.
On this day in NASCAR History, August 16, 1992: Harry Gant wins the 1992 Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan. This would be his 18th and final career win in Cup, as well as the last win ever for Oldsmobile. Gant was 52 years, 219 days old, and remains the oldest person to ever win a race.
Can anyone help me identify this #88 Camaro?
I’m trying to find out which racing series the Camaro on the picture originates from, the year, and, if possible, the driver.
I could be mistaken, but it reminds me of the 90s NASCAR Southwest/Southeast Series or the races held at Saugus Speedway back then, also could be ASA.
I’d really appreciate it if anyone could pinpoint the event or provide any information about the car.
Apologies if it turns out not to be NASCAR-related!
On this day in NASCAR History, August 15, 1999: Ernie Irvan makes his 313th and final NASCAR start. Unfortunately engine issues would relegate the 15 time winner to a 41st place finish in the 1999 Frontier at the Glen. His career would be ended by injury just 5 days later.
Less than a week after this race Irvan, winner of the 1991 Daytona 500, suffered a head injury during practice in his Busch Series car at Michigan International Speedway and had to be airlifted. Two weeks after that he announced his retirement.
Happy 70th birthday to Rusty Wallace, winner of 55 Cup races and the 1989 Winston Cup Champion.
Jeff Gordon's intended car for the 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 400 with The Looney Tunes. Gordon would crash in final practice, and was forced to use a back up car with his regular paint scheme.
This is a screenshot from a video, which is why the image looks a bit off.
On this day in NASCAR History, August 13, 1989: Tim Richmond passes away due to complications from AIDS, which he acquired from an unknown woman. Richmond won 13 Cup races and 14 poles in his short career, along with 2 Busch races. He was just 34 years old.
Honoring for fun
I spent a couple cups of coffee riki tiki tavi-ing this display.
The last restart of the 1998 Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond. Terry Labonte battles his way from 3rd to take the win.
This race would be Andy Graves first Cup win as a Crew Cheif, but was the 20th career win for Texas Terry.
