Finally a non-smoky day!

Did the fire stop? Or the wind? It's finally sunny and not smoky with no smoke smell. Man that was making me sick.

New laptop recommendations

My current laptop (Apple Macbook Air 2020 M1) has finally started to go out on me. I’m trying to research to get a new laptop, but everything genuinely just gives me a headache atp 😭 I have a gaming PC, but I’m way out of my element when it comes to laptop specifications.
My first debate is going with an apple or windows laptop. I prefer apple for their display but windows is of course more compatible with a wider variety of software. I need something that can reliably use photoshop, run some games (REPO, Minecraft), and of course run everything I need for school. I’m an anthropology major, and I’ve heard that when you get deeper in you end up using some Microsoft specific software. I’ve also heard NAU is switching to Microsoft suite over google…
The problem with using windows is I’m not familiar with reliable brands, and I feel like I’ve heard bad things about every main brand that uses windows ;-; any help is much appreciated

Anyone or groups that love to travel?

Hi international student here excited to come to Flagstaff this fall. I am really interested in exploring and travelling as much as I can while staying at NAU. Esp. going to places in Arizona, phoenix, Tucson, Sedona, lake Havasu city and all.

I'd also like to go to nearby states... California, Utah etc

How do people normally do it? Are there groups of students that do these, do I just have to hope to find people who'd be into this or?

When's a good time to apply for a Flag job?

I'm a student who goes to NAU and is only present in Flagstaff for the school year. I'm aiming to get a job somewhere in Flag when I return late August. I've heard people apply for things like around 2-3 months before actually heading up there. I'm not too experienced in the workforce aside from places down in the valley I'm at currently. So, knowing how rough Flag can get, I wanted to ask here for any tips and stuff for a college student. Thank you for any and all help!!!

Themed Tea Parties—interesting or totally cringe?

Hey y’all! I’m not moved in yet, but I’ll be starting in the fall.

I keep seeing these videos on my YouTube recommendations (mostly by Moonstone Kitchen/Haley Post, if y’all are familiar) of these themed tea parties—not the kiddie kind, but the elegant kind with cocktails.

As someone who loves to host themed events of any kind (I was head student event planner for my school’s prom and homecoming all throughout high school), as well as someone looking for ways to make friends beyond clubs, part of me wanted to see if I could try and recreate some of the themed tea parties I saw online—Haley Post’s mermaid-themed one seemed the most beginner-friendly. Maybe putting up some fliers around campus with a Google Form QR code for RSVPs (just so I know how much food to make)?

But then again, now there’s this little voice in the back of my mind that’s like “your idea is stupid and dumb and no one will want to do it and you’ll end up looking like an idiot and you’ll die alone with only rats to mourn you” (you know, rational trains of thought that people without anxiety totally have all the time). Thus, I wanted to ask on here before I bought a bunch of stuff and got my hopes up and all that.

Would anyone be interested in a themed tea party at some point over the fall? Adults-only, free, and with food plus alcoholic AND non-alcoholic beverages provided.

(Here’s the video I was referencing, btw, though I’d probably sub the fruit tray, cucumber slices, and sea glass bites for shrimp cocktail and plenty of sushi: https://youtu.be/lQqggLmu6yI?is=scvBXFd\_Ugh5c5X5 )

Pocket Fire keeps growing. How cooked are we?

I checked the fire map and it looks like it grew thousands of acres overnight. 0% contained. Moving quickly towards Kachina and Southwest Flagstaff.

The county has already issued "be ready to evacuate" to Kachina and southwest neighborhoods like University Heights and Ponderosa are likely next.

I have my documents and stuff ready to go if I need to evacuate. Do you guys think this is gonna be bad?

Answers to your Questions

Hi everyone! I’m a student call service agent at NAU and spend a lot of time helping students navigate university services. While I can’t speak officially for NAU or access anyone’s personal records, I’m happy to answer general questions or point you in the right direction.
Ask me about:
• FAFSA & financial aid
• Scholarships
• Admissions
• Transcripts
• Student account services
• Registration basics
• Finding the right department
• General NAU processes

If I don’t know the answer, I’ll tell you and help you find the correct office. Feel free to ask anything!

This has to be the worst forest fire or whatever since I've been here.

Usually it lasts maybe one day, but this has been like a few days. And the smoke is giving me headaches.

Is it a forest fire?

off campus living with two cats

Hi! I‘m an incoming freshman with 2 cats looking to live off campus. Preferably a pet-friendly studio or 1 bedroom but a roommate who doesn’t mind cats is also great! Any advice is great from students who have lived both on and off campus. If anyone wants to do a lease takeover I am open to them as well!

New NAU Book Fee

Has anyone else seen the new "NAU Axe/ess" fee. From my understanding it replaces buying books and you can still get physical books (which you are supposed to be able to keep after the semester ends) when available.

Fee itself is $270

Definitely a bit concerned since they just added this fee and didn't even send an announcement about it. Which makes it harder to opt out of the fee (which you can do if you want, somehow).

I'm curious about others opinions. Will this be better for us or worse?

Man it is a struggle being a student and living here.

Everyone is hiring until you ask to fill the position. Been searching for a month now. And I have had no success so far. Online applications, going around town in person, had some interviews but wasn't chosen. I swear there's nothing wrong with me. I am an able bodied, responsible man.

But this is difficult, it is affecting my well-being. I will starve and have problems if this goes on for much longer. Everyone said look for a job during the summer, and I have been. And many places are hiring but they are being too picky (for jobs that don't need to be) or I hand them a resume and it will disappear from existence. Literally had to get a guy to find mine and actually look at it.

I guess this could be a warning to future students. Flagstaff is a place people stay in, and there is not a lot of development. Considering it is a city...Anyway if you know anyone who will hire anyone for anything please let me know! As long as I can get there I can do anything.

/NAU? Or /ASU?

/NAU or /ASU?

Hey guys! I currently am enrolled at NAU for the fall semester, I got in on the lumberjack scholarship and a few other financial aid programs. What’s kicking me in the ass is what I wanna do. I’ve genuinely always wanted to become a lawyer and I know that ASU has several strong law majors and programs, whereas NAU is more of a minor area. I know I should’ve thought this through before but I was just happy to have even got into NAU. I applied at ASU, but if I get accepted should I stay enrolled at nau? Or make the switch? If I were to go to ASU I’d be closer to my parents and I wouldn’t need to get a new job, but idk guys I need your honest opinions

Nursing

Hi, I’m starting nursing TBSN this fall, can someone tell me how the schedule is like with clinicals, what days are they usually on? I’m just trying to figure out what days I can work during the week. Thank you.😊
