I am considering NITR for my MSc for next two years. Hostel kaun sa allot hota he? or kya kuch scenario hai? Sare MSc walo ke liye ek hostel ya combine (matlab MTech/BTech/PhD students) hoke rehte hai?

This is shameful.
Our alumni donated their hard-earned money to provide washing machines for students. The intention was simple: make hostel life a little better. But instead of treating this as a welfare facility, the institute has turned it into another way to milk students.
Now students are being charged ₹10 per bucket for using washing facilities that were donated for us. Earlier, we could wash clothes anytime, 24 hours, according to our own schedule. Now the timings are restricted, and students are forced to pay again for something that was already gifted for student welfare.
So let us ask clearly: Does NIT Rourkela lack funds?
Is the institute so broke that it has to collect ₹10 per bucket from students?
Is this a national institute or a roadside money-collection counter?
Where is this money going? Who is collecting it? Who decided this? Why are students being treated like helpless cash machines?
And this is not even the only disgusting example.
Look at what happened with this year’s annual farewell for the 2026 passout batch. Earlier, everyone was allowed to attend and eat food. This time, many seniors were away for placements, internships, PPOs, and other commitments. Only the small percentage left on campus were allowed to eat. The rest were ignored, and then people were reportedly asked to pay around ₹800 separately.
What happened to the money meant for the full batch? Did it vanish into thin air? Was the budget made only for the few people physically present? Or are students just expected to shut up while their money is swallowed quietly?
This is not management. This is exploitation.
Students are already under pressure from academics, placements, internships, hostel problems, and mental stress. Instead of helping, the institute keeps finding new ways to bleed students for basic facilities.
To the alumni here: you donated for students, not for the administration to create a paid bucket-washing system. Please question this. Please ask whether your donation is actually being used with the intention you gave it for.
To the administration: stop hiding behind silence. If NIT Rourkela is truly short of funds, say it openly. If not, stop this shameless squeezing of students.
Students deserve dignity. Students deserve basic facilities. Students deserve answers.
And if asking these questions sounds harsh, then maybe the real problem is not the language. Maybe the real problem is the way students are being treated.

If I join one of these branches and grind coding on my own, will I realistically be able to crack software internships and placements? Also, roughly what percentage of software companies do not allow Mechanical/Chemical students to sit for software roles during placements?

I'm trying to self-host a PHP website with a MySQL database from my Windows 10/11 desktop and could use some guidance/best practices.
Current setup:
ISP: Airtel Xstream Fiber with static IP
Machine: Windows desktop, 8GB RAM, i5, running 24/7 is fine
Goal: Host a PHP website + MySQL DB and access it from the internet via my static IP/domain
What I need help with:
Stack choice: Should I go with XAMPP/WAMP, or set up IIS + PHP + MySQL separately? Any performance/security tradeoffs?
Security: How do I harden a Windows machine that's exposed to the internet? Firewall rules, fail2ban equivalent for Windows, etc.
Airtel router config: Any quirks with port forwarding 80/443 on Airtel routers? Do I need to call them to unblock ports?
Domain + SSL: Best way to point my domain to the static IP and get HTTPS working. Let's Encrypt on Windows?
MySQL exposure: Should I keep MySQL on localhost only and just let PHP access it, or is there a safe way to allow remote access?
Uptime/reliability: Anything I should set up for auto-restart, monitoring, or backups?
I know a Linux VPS is usually recommended, but I want to try self-hosting first to learn and save costs. Should i remove windows and install Linux CentOS server or Ubuntu Server
If you've done something similar on Windows + Airtel, I'd love to hear what worked, what to avoid, and any tutorials you trust.

Everything is quite depressing rn. The placement stats of vit scare the absolute shit out of me. It's quite obvious that I'd have to grind my ass off in both the places. But where would u say I can get more opportunities and internships? Also, if I take a lower branch in nitr, will I be rejected by most of the on campus companies?
