NYC drummer looking to make noise this summer

Yo — drummer in NYC looking to play with some people.

Mostly into rock/punk/alt stuff, but honestly open to whatever if the vibe is good. Just trying to find people who actually wanna make music, rehearse, play shows, etc.

Down to jam, join a band, fill in for gigs, whatever.

Based around the city and can travel around Brooklyn/Manhattan/Queens pretty easily.

Hit me up if you need a drummer or wanna make some noise.

Bassist and Drummer for Hooky Indie Pop Band

Hi!

I’m Matt, a 41 year old playwright, copywriter, and former musical theater performer looking for drummer and bassist for my new indie pop band. Influences are Cat Stevens, Oasis, and Conor Oberst, among many others. My friend Ryan is the guitarist - an excellent player with a day job as a therapist. In short, we’re solid and proud amateurs who have fun playing on the weekends.

We're looking for NYC-based musicians who are good competent players, not necessarily virtuosic or professional players (at our level, basically).
People who have day jobs that aren’t music. Male or female both welcome, we’re looking to have a gender mix in the band.

Feel free to reach out with any questions! Happy to send a few demos if you want to take a listen and hear for yourself.

songwriting/voice grad programs in nyc

I'm 28 years old and already have a bachelor's degree, so I'm not looking for an undergrad program. I'm wondering if there are any good songwriting or voice programs for popular/contemporary music in NYC? I see Berklee's program, but I'm wondering if there are more inexpensive options or even just courses that aren't a masters degree that are effective. Open to grad programs though, if they're good. I'm hoping to pivot to a career in music and am really looking for a concentrated way to delve into songwriting and singing a lot more, so I can see how being in a school setting would help give me the kind of focused learning and network that I want. Thanks!

edit: to clarify, i am looking for specific courses, programs, names of teachers, etc. that focus on building the SKILLS in songwriting/singing. I am not so much in need of building a brand, working on my performance, etc. as i feel that i already am supplementing those aspects of a music career elsewhere. thanks! (:

Bi-Weekly Gowanus Jam

Hey, I am starting a bi-weekly jam in Gowanus, at Pirate studios on 6th St in the evening (starting around 7pm). I mainly play guitar, I sing a bit, but can play a little drums. If there is something similar existing, I would be interested in going also.

Mainly looking to play casually, but regularly. I’d start with covers and pick them out before practice (try at least 4 songs per practice), and build up a little song book. I’ll keep a running list that will be accessible online.

First jam I am looking to do is Monday, 6/1. Reach out if you are interested, either on reddit or insta @kanemmusic. All levels welcome. 21+ preferred. I am 33M.

Industry Rumor: The massive Gamma Music leaks and what they mean for independent distribution (Ye, Snoop, Chart Manipulation)

Hey everyone,

Not sure if anyone else has been tracking this, but a massive wave of allegedly leaked internal communications and backchannel industry messages from Gamma Music Group (Larry Jackson Jr.’s heavily hyped distributor) has been making the rounds in executive and producer circles.

Gamma launched with a ton of PR, branding themselves as a $1B independent safe haven for major artists who wanted to escape the traditional label trap. But if these leaks are even half true, the reality behind the curtain is pure chaos.

Given how many of us are trying to navigate independent distribution right now, I figured this was worth breaking down. Here are the biggest takeaways from the leaked documents:

  1. The Kanye / "Bully" Fallout

Gamma heavily used their partnership with Ye for industry clout (even signing North West). However, the leaks allege that when Ye ran into major sample clearance wars with Atlantic Records over his Bully project, Gamma executives panicked about their own investors and completely ghosted, leaving him isolated to handle the industry and legal backlash on his own.

  1. A "Security Crisis" Over Sexyy Red

In one of the wildest operational details, the leaks claim that dysfunction got so bad that rapper Sexyy Red’s management allegedly brought local muscle directly to the Gamma corporate offices over a major dispute. The situation reportedly escalated to a full-on office standoff until Snoop Dogg had to personally step in to de-escalate it.

  1. The $1 Billion Valuation vs. The Burn Rate

Larry Jackson famously landed a Billboard cover claiming a massive $1B backing. The leaks allege this was pure PR fluff; they actually raised closer to $100M and have already burned through roughly $90M of it on corporate overhead, private jets, and luxury executive lifestyles—leaving them with a dangerously thin runway.

  1. Massively Botted Chart Numbers

For those of us tracking how hard it is to play the algorithmic game fairly: the messages allege Gamma tried to log 159,000 units for a high-profile release. Billboard’s data team caught onto massive inorganic traffic, flagged it, and stripped away 113,000 "botted" units, leaving the project with a meager 46,000 real sales.

Why this matters to the community:

We talk a lot on this sub about finding the right distribution and staying independent. If a company with this much institutional backing is allegedly relying on bot farms, fake valuations, and abandoning their biggest artists the second a legal hurdle pops up, what does that say about the current state of "independent" music tech?

Is this just typical major-label-style inflation wrapped in a shiny new "indie distribution" package, or is Gamma an absolute trainwreck? Anyone else hearing whispers about this in the city?

Is There Anything Like This In NYC?

https://www.themusicdistrict.org/the-space
This magical place is basically a gym for musicians. For a monthly membership fee, you get access to fully backlined rehearsal rooms, a gear room, a staff of musicians/industry folks, and lots of different workshops and classes.

I obviously love it, especially because I play the drums and it's great to just walk in, sit down, and play. Does NYC have any similar organizations?

Organizing a physical media fest in NYC

I'm organizing a festival celebrating physical media at a DIY venue in Bushwick, Brooklyn this Saturday, May 16th 6-11pm.

We'll have vendors selling new releases (!) on VHS, vinyl, CDs, personal hand-drawn tarot cards, zines, and cassettes/CDs/vinyl from local performers.

In addition to the market, we'll also have two stages of local music, with eight performances, from folk to rock to live brass.
