Do I have any chance?

I previously processed back in 2018, but failed the psych for lying about past drug use. Back in 2022, I was driving and an MTA bus merged into me and ran me out of my line and into oncoming traffic so sped up and threw a can of soda at it. I wasn’t charged or anything but MTA detectives knocked on my door. Do I have any chance of getting through the psych this time? I’m like 99% sure I’ll fail again but just want confirmation I guess.

Vision Requirement- Squinting

Hello All - I am interested in joining the force but I am nervous about the vision requirement. How lenient are they when giving the test?

I do not want to put other officers in danger or waste time applying if will not pass the vision test.

I have an eye issue that leaves one of eyes at 20/100 or 20/200 (uncorrected) if I squint on a good day. The former just meets the requirement.

If I wear scleral contacts, I am 20/20 and 20/25 in both eyes.

These lenses are more comfortable to wear than regular soft lenses. They also stay in place better than normal lenses.

In the meantime, I am looking at other agencies with more lenient uncorrected vision requirements.

You might never get to a specialized unit

this just occurred to me but obviously it’s always been hard to get to specialized units, sometimes even with a hook. But when you consider that they’ve hired like 10,000 people over the past few years it’s basically a needle in a haystack chance. Thats a lot of supply for very little demand. You pretty much need to be ok with patrol for 20 years when taking this job now. that is all

The LIRR union won in 2 days. Why is the PBA giving us empty monthly updates?

Did anyone else catch that post floating around earlier before it got yanked? Honestly, whoever wrote it was completely spot on, and it got me thinking about how broken things are. Look at how the LIRR unions just handled their business—they stood up for themselves, held the line, and management folded in literally two days because they realized the city would freeze without them. Meanwhile, our PBA leadership acts like their hands are completely tied.

Patrick is so timid it's embarrassing. It’s easy for him to be weak when he’s pulling down double salaries and doesn't have to check his bank account just to buy a meal on a meal break.

It is insane that we have a union of 25,000-plus cops and all we get is a generic update once a month while we work with no contract. How is a newer cop or even cops with 2-3 years on supposed to survive on a $1,600 check when a basic one-bedroom apartment in the city is costing $2,200 to $2,400 now? If you don't live with your parents, you're practically not able to pay all your bills. Why aren’t we able to earn a decent living wage on base pay alone? Instead, guys are killing themselves working 60-plus hours a week, destroying their family life just to count on overtime to put food on the table.

Half the department is secretly working second jobs on the side just to pay basic bills. No wonder people are running for the exits to go to Florida or suburban departments that actually pay a living wage. Whoever posted that earlier was right—our union leadership is way too comfortable, and we’re the ones paying the price.

Am I cooked?

Exam #6319 here, just got my initial medical date. Wondering if I should go through the process or if it will be a huge waste of time….I’m 29 right now, lead a modest life and haven’t been in any kind of trouble with the law recently. However, between the ages 20-22 I got in 2 separate alcohol related car crashes and was arrested for possession of cocaine (it was like a trace amount left in a bag and the case got dismissed and sealed but I feel like the nypd can prob still see it during background check)

I realize I’ll probably get judgement and I admit it’s not a good look especially to try and become a police officer. Does anyone have any similar type situation or know someone who does and still made it into the academy? Or is this pretty much guaranteed to DQ me? Brute honesty please and thank you

Broken collarbone

Just passed initial medical and the next day I took a terrible fall while mountain biking. I broke my clavicle and I’m going to need surgery with a plate / screws. I know this keeps me out for a while now, but after being fully healed will it still give me problems ? Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Oral Psych.

Just had my Oral Psych via Remote. Got grilled on a personal family matter. Lasted about 25 minutes. He abruptly said “we will not continue any further” and then said “you will no longer have any meeting through remote” and then said “would you be open to coming in person to do this part of the process” I said yes. Then he said “someone will call you from our office soon” and abruptly ended the call.

Has anyone ever heard of someone being rescheduled from remote to in person? I’ve never read of this happening here.

Is the academy hard?

Hi y'all, I'm almost done with all my appointments (just my drug test left) and I've been curious how hard the academy is exactly.

I've seen varying different positions on this subreddit. Some people say it's extremely easy and you'd basically have to try and fail it, and other people say it's challenging and you'll be exhausted by the end of day. Which has left me confused more than anything?

I'd appreciate it if anyone could answer,

1 - What is the schedule like? When is academics, gym, firearm training, martial arts practice, etc. throughout the 6 months?

2 - What is the parking situation like? This one has left me the most confused because some people say that you need to carpool to get access to the lot, while others say you don't, while others say that you can park outside at the no parking and standing signs and they won't ticket.

3 - How many exams are there? And do you get laptops or is it pen and paper?

4 - Why are people saying this next academy class on July 22 is going to be the last one for a while? Like I've heard rumors about budget cuts and the mayor's new initiatives but nothing concrete?

Dental insurance question

Looking for insight. Does the dental insurance only cover around $700 let’s say out of the 3K cost? Any other option for root canal that charge less?
