Beginner question: how do you use a stud finder correctly when outlets and pipes keep throwing it off?

Bought a cheap electronic stud finder and it freaks out every time I get near outlets or plumbing, so I can't tell what's real and what's metal. I already tried calibrating on a blank patch, scanning slow, flipping it vertical/horizontal and lowering sensitivity but still get false beeps. Thinking about getting a magnetic finder or just using outlet edge + 16" rule and small pilot holes to confirm, but don't want to spend money if there's a simple technique. Tell me what you actually do when outlets/pipes confuse the unit and which models or tricks actually work for you.

Which cordless drill under $150 held up for years with daily DIY use and which one would you avoid?

Been doing daily DIY and small reno work for about 3 years and finally fed up with replacing drills every season. My Makita XFD has been a tank so far, still runs hard and the batteries hold up better than I expected. On the other hand a Ryobi I bought cheap started wobbling and the cells sagged after a year, so I’d skip that line. Which drill actually lasted for you with heavy daily use, how long did it run, and what part finally failed?

Is the nanit baby monitor worth it or is it marketing for tired parents??

first baby on the way and the price gap between a basic monitor and a smart one is kind of wild. you can get something that shows video and plays white noise for $60 or spend five times that for features most people describe as nice to have. the thing that keeps pulling me back from just going cheap is people saying they ended up buying twice. once for the basic monitor then again after realizing they wanted more. thats not really saving money either. for people who went one way or the other what was the actual difference in daily use? not the spec sheet but the real stuff.

Best Budget Travel Backpacks Under $100 in 2026?

For my next trip I'm thinking about switching from a wheeled carry-on to a travel backpack. Mostly just trying to see whether I actually enjoy traveling that way before spending serious money on a premium bag.

I did a short trip recently with a regular backpack and liked the experience, but it was definitely too small for more than a night or two.

This next trip will mostly be airport, train, taxi, hotel type travel, so I won't be carrying the bag for hours at a time or doing any serious hiking. Comfort still matters, but I probably don't need a full-on trekking pack either.

Right now I'm looking at a lot of the 30L-40L backpacks on Amazon in the $45-100 range, but it's hard to tell which ones are genuinely decent and which ones just have a ton of reviews because they're cheap.

For people who've actually traveled with budget travel backpacks, which ones ended up being surprisingly good and which ones would you avoid?
