Ottawa making changes to 20 projects to comply with Ontario’s ban on replacing traffic lanes with bike lanes
ctvnews.caThe absolute heck is going on with the total unluckiness of Nepean
2018: Craig Henry tornado, power out for a while.
2022: Merivale destroyed with the derecho, power out there for an extended period of time
2026: Canada Day floods, more rain, and now most of the former city has no power again. Plus Moodie station is damaged
Why is it (either geographically, topographically, environmentally, and also politically/city infrastructure-wise) that Nepean always is the one to suffer the most. I’ve never heard Orleans, Kanata, Downtown, or the south end impacted hugely during these storms. I would not be surprised if people avoid homes in the area due to the proneness for flooding and less reliable grid.
Edit: I forgot about the April 2023 freezing rain, that impacted all areas of Ottawa, but for the areas with the largest outages, it was ALL of bells corners and the entirety of Merivale (again)
The Ghost of Retail Past: Nepean Edition / Nostalgie : Nepean autrefois English
Before the massive developments and the "big box" era, Nepean had a very specific flavor. From the bustling Merivale corridor to the quiet corners of Bells Corners and City View, many of our favorite local hangouts are now gone.
The Nepean Legends:
- The Merivale DQ (The Original): For over 60 years, it wasn't spring until the walk-up window on Merivale opened. It’s still a vacant lot, and we still miss those dipped cones.
- Pascal’s Hardware: At the corner of Meadowlands and Merivale, it was once a local giant. Now, we have the "Emerald Plaza" vibe, but it’s not quite the same.
- Bayshore’s "Thin People" Fountain: Before the mall became a modern glass fortress, that fountain was the meeting spot for every teenager in Nepean.
- The Nepean Museum’s "Old Days": When the area was still its own city with Ben Franklin at the helm.
- The Woodroffe/Baseline "Originals": The old diners and shops that existed before the College and the surrounding transit hubs completely transformed the area.
The Question: If you could bring back one defunct Nepean store, restaurant, or hangout spot, what would it be? Was it the video store in Bells Corners, a greasy spoon on Merivale, or a shop in the original Westgate or Carewood plazas?

Ottawa police targeting e-scooter misuse, underage operation
On Friday, Sgt. Josh Callaghan told Newstalk 580 CFRA’s Ottawa Now with Kristy Cameron that police are currently targeting the Findlay Creek and Riverside South areas, looking out for underage driving, unsafe operation and speeding.
Callaghan said the initiative started at the beginning of the summer. The first blitz was focused on the downtown core, and officers also went to the Carlington area.
The legal minimum age to operate an e-scooter in Ottawa is 16.
Britannia Beach- SHOUT OUT LIFEGUARDS
A man had a cardiac episode and stopped breathing during a volleyball match today. He seemed to be in his 40s- not sure if he had an underlying condition. It was very sudden. He collapsed very quickly and it took a minute before everybody realized something was wrong. It was looking really dire, the lifeguards were rushing around and alternating, trying to perform CPR to bring him back to life while everybody waited for EMS to come. Thankfully due to the diligent work of the entire lifeguard team- specifically a young woman lifeguard who didn’t stop attempting CPR/falter until he regained consciousness/started breathing again-he was okay!
To the man- I hope you’re okay! Please take it easy!
To the lifeguards - THANK YOU! especially that young woman that saved him- YOURE AMAZING!!! I can’t imagine how scary that must have been but you should be really proud of yourself!
You’ve inspired me to get re-certified as this situation reminded that the need for CPR exists outside avoiding drowning incidents! Random heart episodes or other emergency situations may prompt the need for that and other lifesaving skills!
Thank you lifeguards! You’re SO underrated!
Edit: it was especially chaotic bc the lifeguard station(s) face the water. Obviously looking out for those swimming inside the river etc - as they should. But as he suddenly collapsed while playing volleyball, this was BEHIND the lifeguard stations. So just not something that was immediately noticed by them (and many others!) extra commendable that they saved him given the circumstances/timeliness!
Another edit: another commenter helpfully pointed out it was closer to 7:30 so they were off duty by then! 😮💨 even more impressive.
