[Weekly Thread] Nepean Good Neighbors: Share your wins! 🤝 | Bons voisins de Nepean : Partagez vos succès !

It’s time for our weekly feel-good thread! Let's take a break from traffic updates and construction and highlight the best of our community.

This week’s prompts:

  • Shop Local Win: Did a staff member at a shop on Merivale or in Bells Corners go above and beyond for you this week?
  • Neighborhood Random Acts: Did someone help you clear your driveway after that last slushy March snowfall?
  • Sportsplex/Algonquin Shoutouts: Saw a great performance or had a positive experience at the Sportsplex or the College?
  • The "Hidden Gem": Found a new favorite trail in the Pine Grove forest or a killer coffee spot in Centrepointe?

Call 3-1-1 If Your Basement is Flooded - Councillor Johnson

Councillors just received the following from the head of emergency services:

There has been severe weather today with heavy rainfall in a short period of time. This has resulted in basement flooding. We encourage residents to call 3-1-1 to report basement flooding.

More information is available to residents at Ottawa.ca/flooding but in particular, what to do if their basements have flooded. Pooling water on roads is normal in these situations, but we still encourage residents to report through 3-1-1.

From Laine Johnson - College Ward Power Outage Update

Good morning, #CollegeWard. I know that many of you are still without power this morning.

I’ve been in touch with Hydro Ottawa. Crews worked overnight in an attempt to restore power. The lightning and wind has proven extremely challenging, and flooding has made it worse.

Current expectations from Hydro is to have most power restored by noon today. Fingers crossed, neighbours.

To what Nepean address, other than your home, do you get business mail delivered?

I am a one-person business. The business must have a mailing address, not a post office box. I don't want my home address publicly available as the business address. Clients do not come here, though I work from here. There are various services listed online that provide a business address for a monthly fee. Is anyone using any of these? The one called iPostal1 looks to be based at Staples on Merivale.

Poutine Crimes: What is the Ultimate Sin?

Alright Nepean, it’s time for some controversial community service. We live in the National Capital Region, which means we are far too close to Quebec to allow "Poutine Crimes" to happen in our own backyard.

The Golden Rules of Poutine:

  1. The Squeak: If the cheese curds don't squeak, it’s a misdemeanor.
  2. The Shred: Using shredded mozzarella instead of curds? That’s a felony.
  3. The Soup: If the fries are swimming in thin, watery gravy until they become mush? Straight to jail.

The Question: What is the worst poutine crime you’ve witnessed in Nepean? Is it a specific topping (peas? ketchup?), or a local shop that uses the "wrong" cheese?

Tell us where to find the best authentic curds in Nepean, and who we need to report to the Poutine Police!

A Shout-out to the "Better Angel" at the Service Ontario Center Today

I wanted to share a quick story about the kindness I ran into today.

I was at the Service Ontario center at Carling trying to get my driver's license renewed before it expired. I arrived just as things were wrapping up, and they weren’t taking any more appointments. I was pretty stressed, thinking I was going to be stuck with an expired license.

Out of nowhere, this gentleman in his fifties stepped up. He realized he didn’t have all the right documentation on him to complete his own task, so he walked over and handed me his ticket. He actually took the time to talk to the clerk and convinced them to let me go in his place before they closed up.

He just left after that without needing any thanks.

Whoever you are—thank you. You really saved my day, and it’s a great reminder that the "better angels" definitely exist here in Nepean.
