First time Dm how do I get better?

Alright my teacher let me host a session after school in his classroom. It took me ten minutes to get some music, and me and my friends got ready. Since it was just session one and mainly I brought enough soda to give them both heart attacks.

Characters:
The Optimist Prime: Druid/Cleric
Muggle: Rouge/ Paladin

So I started it off simply with them being in a boat, and it crashing. Mainly just as an easy way to start it off, they washed up onto shore, noting everyone’s bodies washing up or simply missing. I set up two npcs in the woods camping my brain went: “Ok maybe they’ll ask them for information or maybe a way into town?” It was getting late and the ships fire was the only source of light as the dim light nuzzled in. THEY MURDER THE NPCS BOTH OF THEM CRUSHING THEYER HEADS. Muggle took their stuff, The Optimist Prime teabag them, then Muggle said: “Oh uh can we sleep here since it’s getting late?” I said sure, and in the middle of the night since the fire went out due to them not taking watch, I made a monster come around and start trying to take the bodies. Mainly I’m stuttering trying to come up with a idea, but Muggle and The Optimist Prime booked it out of there and ran in the middle of the night, so I said they came along a trail, and on that trail was a marble castle ruined by old vines and trees. I proceeded to watch Muggle try to open an unlocked door by lock picking it. Then The Optimist Prime remembering that she has free will, and doesn’t have to follow Muggle plan and then just gets used as a battering ram to open the door by Muggle.

At this point I just pull a scene out my mouth, as I described marble walls, one main door two side doors, main room has a man playing the piano surrounded by mannequins. They both proceed to try to build a wall of fire between them and the man playing the piano since I messed up and said “One of the mannequins hand twitched.” Then I said the door they entered disappeared, but we ran out of time since we only had a hour. So now I feel like I like I can make this kinda like a Tower of Babel since they believe now: “This a curse castle?” so to my response is a “Yes.” And now they wanna explore the castle since I accidentally left it on a cliffhanger.

So is the worst thing a Dm can do? Or just something for beginners?

Some Uncommon magic items inspired by Asian legends and myths | 300+ Mythological Items for 5E and 2024

Hello, fellow adventurers! Today, we are excited to share some Uncommon magic items inspired by Asian legends and myths! These entries come from our upcoming Kickstarter project, 300+ Mythological Items for 5E and 2024.

Step into a realm of ancient gods, legendary heroes, and forgotten civilizations with Mythological Items, a comprehensive compendium featuring over 300 magical items specifically designed for 5E and its 2024 ruleset update. This manual spans a vast array of cultural traditions, organizing its treasures into regional categories for easy reference and immersive worldbuilding. Each item includes not only full game mechanics, but also lore and background information to integrate it seamlessly into your campaign, whether as treasure, quest rewards, or the key to an unfolding mythic saga. From the storm-summoning weapons of thunder gods to cursed trinkets whispered of in ancient lore, this book brings myth to your table like never before.

This manual offers an extensive collection of magical items that can be incorporated into any campaign, regardless of its connection to specific mythological themes. The items presented in this volume, drawn from a multitude of global legends and folklore, are envisioned to enhance the diversity and depth of any fantasy world. This eclectic array mirrors the inherent blending of elements in many worlds and settings, where influences from various cultures and mythologies coexist harmoniously. For instance, Thor’s Hammer, Mjölnir, could serve as the centerpiece of a divine quest, while Draupnir, the Norse ring of endless wealth, might drive political intrigue or power struggles in a kingdom torn by greed.

Mythological Items also provides a solid foundation for campaigns that wish to delve deeper into the relics of a specific mythology or blend multiple traditions into a larger, interconnected setting. A campaign inspired by Greek mythology could see players donning the Nemean Lion’s Pelt, becoming nearly invulnerable as they take on challenges worthy of Heracles himself, while a campaign drawing from Japanese folklore could involve uncovering the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, the fabled grass-cutting sword tied to imperial lineage and divine storms.

We suggest checking our pre-launch page for additional info and an extended 30-page preview of our compendium, scheduled to release in a few months! Alternatively, you can also subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on upcoming projects, special offers, and important news about our past and future works.

Newish DM - Larger Party

I'm a newer DM (a one-shot, and a 4 episode campaign) and my next party is 7 players starting at level 5 😅. I'm using the Light of Xaryxis campaign frame but I'm worried the combat encounters won't be balanced or fun with so many beefy players. I've looked online for advise and I'm not really seeing much beyond don't have more than 5 players (too late) and have your veterans help the newbies.

Does anyone have any examples or advise on how I can navigate a larger party?

I’m an extremely new DND player taking on the role of DM

Hey yall. So title is pretty self explanatory. I have never played DND in my life, tho this type of scene is right up my alley. I love a good rpg, nerd stuff, making funny voices, I’m hyped!

However let’s be so for real, this is one of the most overwhelming things I’ve done in my life. Obviously I want to do it right, and have everything go smooth, but the problem is I don’t even know where to begin.

I got the DND essentials kit as I was suggested that, but any tips on how to run smooth, fun games, Improv tips, general knowledge I should know going in. Anything helps really. I’m running a game for my buddies who are similar in age as me (25m) and they’re all new as well. Wish me luck?

I am about to start a new campaign on Monday using Shadowdark - it's going to be a sandbox, with a sort of home-base clearing/building/expanding mechanic.

The idea is that the party has some obscure claim to a monster-infested keep in the borderlands, and have arrived to make good their claim. The region bore the brunt of the Evil Sorceress^(tm) and her Invading Army a generation ago, so it's full of ruins and old battlefields. The current overlord of the region is one of her minor lieutenants who rules from the only standing castle in the area.

Sooo the party will be simultaneously trying to lay claim to the land, avoid outright hostility (until the right time), and get enough power and support from the locals to eventually make good their claim. Should involve plenty of dungeon-crawling, careful town excursions, and helping locals to show they are reliable.

Anywayyyyy

My question is how to start off? I have a vague idea of starting the party off having been captured by a press-gang of the overlord's, on their way to one of the local mines. I was imagining one of those wagons with the cage built onto the bed. In my mind, I had the idea of starting just as they're stopped for the night, the gang gathered around the fire, and the thief in the party picking the lock of the cage...

But...I have no idea if this is the right tone to set. It would involve starting them off with nothing, and they might all just die in the escape attempt...

So I'm brainstorming other ways of starting things off.

Tl:DR -

What are some of the best ways you've started campaigns before? And how do you get the players feeling energized from the get-go?
