Palisades Has Been Rebuilt

Everybody check Google Maps. All the burned-down homes have been magically restored. It’s a permitting miracle!

For real though, something fishy is going on. I look at Google Maps on satellite mode daily, and suddenly it’s reverted to a pre-fire view. Very suspicious so close to the election.

Hi /r/AskLosAngeles. I’m Nithya Raman, Los Angeles City Councilmember for CD4 and candidate for Los Angeles Mayor. Ask Me Anything. What do you want to see from your mayor?

Update: Thank you so much everyone for participating! There are a couple more questions Nithya really wanted to answer, and I'm hoping we'll be able to get her answers posted over the next couple of days.

-TeamNithya

I'll be answering questions starting around 2:00 pm this afternoon.
Hi r/AskLosAngeles!

I’m Nithya Raman, Los Angeles City Council Member for Council District Four and candidate for Mayor.

I’m an immigrant, an urban planner by training (I earned my master’s degree at MIT), and the mother of 10-year-old twins.

I’m running for mayor because Los Angeles is in crisis- everyone can feel it. The city is unaffordable, unable to deliver basic services, and failing to provide transparency & accountability. In City Hall, there is a lack of leadership instead of the urgency and vision we need.

On council, I passed the strongest renter protections in LA’s history, lowered rent increases for over 1.5 million Angelenos, established independent redistricting, and wrote LA’s sanctuary city ordinance. In my own district, I reduced tents and encampments by 54% and built more protected bike lanes than any other council district. I’m ready to take this progress city-wide!

I want to fight for this city’s future: build more housing, address homelessness, deliver on public safety, expand Metro, and create a city that works for everyone.

And with that, Ask Me Anything! Who’s ready?

Please reconsider your vote for Spencer Pratt. He supports policies that are not only proven to not work, but actually will cause more homelessness and encampments.

A few days back, I saw a post speaking out in support of Spencer Pratt, and a lot has to do with the frustration over the status quo and failures of LA City.

I understand people's frustrations. But not only is Spencer Pratt not the solution, but he's only going to exacerbate the already existing problems and make them even worse.

[Pratt unironically believes that there is no housing shortage.](https://spencerpratt.substack.com/p/the-phantom-housing-crisis)

However, the evidence and research is very clear: [California does have a housing shortage, and it is the root of nearly all of the issues we are facing today.](https://calmatters.org/explainers/california-housing-costs-explainer/)

[Research shows that housing prices is the primary driver of homelessness](https://www.pew.org/en/research-and-analysis/articles/2023/08/22/how-housing-costs-drive-levels-of-homelessness)

[Most homeless get into drugs AFTER becoming homeless, not before](https://homelessness.ucsf.edu/resources/press-release/new-ucsf-bhhi-report-examines-relationship-between-homelessness-and-drug)

[Treatment-first approaches to housing does not work](https://theconversation.com/what-decades-of-research-reveal-about-involuntary-substance-use-treatment-and-why-evidence-points-elsewhere-268841)

Pratt just wants to continue the same policies that Bass pushes which caused this mess in the first place, like opposing upzoning and walkability.

Raman is far from perfect. But she is the best candidate to solve LA's problems long-term.

The fire was inevitable - don’t pin blame in ways you’ll regret it.

I don’t know why it’s not being talked about, but we need to prevent wildfires through controlled burns. I’m not sure why we are now resorting to promoting people like Pratt who has blown over 2 million at a time for “crystals” instead of actually attacking the problem at large that caused such a horrible and devastating incident. Bass is not perfect… but if you blame her for the travesty that was the palisades fires… you are being disingenuous about the state of wildlife / wildfire management in LosAngeles and California. Fire education in general needs to be a priority combined with preventative measures like controlled burns. Pratt will not do that.

Fire Recovery Exhibit at SMC

Hi all,

My UX Design class, along with the Journalism, Architecture, and Media departments at Santa Monica College is hosting a Fire Recovery exhibit at our annual CMD Student Showcase on June 11. All are welcome to the event and our student-led exhibit. We intend to share the stories of the Palisades community, educate people on fire safety, and showcase design projects focused on building in wildfire-impacted neighborhoods.

I wanted to ask this community if anyone affected by the fires would be willing to lend an item or photograph that remains after the fire. This would be a small part of the exhibit that honors the artifact you lend us and the story behind it. If you are willing to lend the physical object, I will ensure that it is kept safe, but a photo of it is more than enough!

If you or anyone you know would be interested, please dm me.

AND if you or anyone you know is interested in viewing the exhibit, the event is free and is on June 11 from 5-9pm!

Erewhon Palisades reopening delayed?

I just discovered this on the official Erewhon website, in the locations page, and it’s saying that it will reopen January 2027. Weren’t they supposed to reopen the location in August this year? Is the reopening getting delayed?

Your voice matters - help protect aging services in our coastal communities

Older adults across Los Angeles County could lose critical services that support their health, independence, and dignity.

The California Department of Aging is proposing changes to the distribution of Older Americans Act funding across the state, including a 17% budget reduction for Los Angeles County. This could reduce essential services for older adults such as home-delivered meals, congregate dining, senior centers, case management, transportation, and caregiver support.

State leaders can still revise the funding formula before it is finalized. Your voice can help protect services, ensure funding reflects Los Angeles County’s needs, and prevent harmful cuts.

Simply submit a public comment to the Department of Aging by 5:00 p.m. on May 12, 2026, via email at: CA2030@aging.ca.gov. You can access a template letter here.

Read our op-ed on this topic in today’s Santa Monica Daily Press here.
