Homesick for NH and hoping to borrow a little piece of home

I’m looking for a little piece of New Hampshire to be sent my way. I grew up in NH on the seacoast, surrounded by tide pools, sand dunes, woods, birch trees, beaches, rocks, leaves, and all the things I apparently took for granted until I moved out of state and ended up landlocked in a “city.” (I use the word city loosely. )

I’m making my first junk journal, and I’d love to include some actual pieces of home in it—beach stones, a little silver birch bark, pretty/fallen leaves, and maybe a small baggie of NH sand.

I know these are just ordinary things, but when you’re homesick, ordinary things can feel pretty damn special. I miss the woods, the smell of low tide..and everything after rain, well I miss just being there.

So if anyone in NH would be willing to collect a few little treasures and mail them to this homesick former NH girl, I’d be incredibly grateful.

Basically, I’m trying to have New Hampshire mailed to me because apparently teleportation hasn’t been invented yet.

Need Honest Car Mechanic Urgently

I urgently need to visit a car mechanic and I'm new to the area, my car has 2 leaks… one in the brake fluid area and one in the transmission fluid.

I drive a 2012 Honda Civic EX.

I need to get my Power Steering system checked because my steering wheel is feeling stiff as well.

I also need to install a brand new Brake Master Cylinder to my car, I have it in my trunk brand new and sealed but haven’t gotten it installed yet.

Anyone knows any car mechanic that is honest and won’t rip me off? Someone that actually fixes cars long term for their customers?

I need to put some transmission fluid because my Shift Gear is feeling very tough sometimes and it scares me, but Valvoline charges freaking $250 for that.

I'm always around Newington and Portsmouth.

Thank you in advance, I really appreciate it.

Good activities for a family with tweens?

I'm taking my kids to Portsmouth from Sunday until Thursday and I'm trying to figure out the best way to spend our time. It's supposed to be a chill and reset before they go back to school. I've got Seacoast Science Center on our list, and a gentle bookmark on Strawberry Banke, but we just went to Sturbridge village earlier in the summer so not sure that's going to fly. Prescott Park is mentioned a lot, is it just a lovely walk, or are there events? Where are the best beaches that aren't packed to the gills and have parking I don't feel like I'm in Mad Max? Is there anything else that's good for tweens within a 30-45 minute drive that isn't going to break the bank? There's going to be four or five of us.

Thank you!

Where to go for dinner?

My sister and I spend a night in Portsmouth every summer for a girl trip. We've been staying at a hotel right by market square which is convenient to walk to stores... but there is weirdly a real lack of good restaurants we've noticed? Our go-to is typically Cafe Med but we'd be happy to try something else as its been years now. Everytime we try to branch out we just havent found much that checks all the boxes - feels like a bit of a splurge without being completely outrageous, not entirely seafood, and stuff a little different than your basics you would get at home (smashburgers, pub food, etc). At this point I think we'd be happy to even drive somewhere for an excellent meal. Any suggestions?

Library Restaurant Dress Code?

Going to the Library Restaurant with my gf tomorrow and I’ve never been before, they say upscale attire is encouraged. Would I be out of place just wearing khakis and a polo shirt?

Modular Home

Has anyone her built a modular home on their own property or just in general?

Looking for housing options and a modular home seems like the best bet but just wanted a better idea about the process and what we could be getting into!

How was dealing with the city and zoning rules and what modular home company did you end up going with?

Thanks!

Fishing from pierce island

Hey all, just wondering if fishing from pierce island is allowed at night? Saw a post from a long time ago mentioning the need for a permit to fish at night so I just wanted to check if that’s still needed or what the deal is. I have a fishing license and fish a bunch.

Any fellow anglers in here feel free to drop some helpful knowledge too for catching stripers in the piscataqua! Not looking for spots, just what’s been working for you, thanks!

Love NHPR? Hate NHPR? We want to hear it.

Hey r/concordnh!

Is your car automatically set to 89.1 FM? Or…do you make it a point to avoid our station?

Either way, we want to know why. Take this quick, 5-minute survey and tell us how we can do better and what you need from local news in New Hampshire.

If you take the survey, you’ll have a chance to win a $100 gift card to a gas station or grocery store of your choice. (We’ll randomly pick 10 winners from all of the respondents!)

One more important note: We won’t share your responses outside of NHPR, and we won’t sell your information to outside parties.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us — your voice will help us better serve this whole state.

Towne Parking

Went to dinner last night on Bow Street. Paid an arm and a leg to park in a Towne lot. Got a ticket on my car despite listing my plate number.

I guess my question is How did the Portsmouth municipal government contract with these incompetent thieves? There was no signage to tell me which Bow Street garage I was in! Had to guess whether it was 30, 40, or 50. There was no attendant to talk to.

Lesson learned. Stick to muni parking lots and avoid Towne.

Middle Street roadwork taking too long

Anybody knows when is it that they will start throwing the new asphalt layer to Middle St? Its been a few weeks and its frustrating to drive on that road with all the elevated lids and bumps.

It is also so weird that they are not working on it at night when there is barely any traffic just in day time when there is all the traffic pumping.

One of those elevated metal round things destroyed my front left mudguard, no big deal but please… when is going to be such a great road to drive on again?

Thanks in advance

How to make friends in the area?

Hey I am moving to the area at the end of the month. I am 25 years old. I am sort of trying to find friends and just some places to connect with people around my age, since I know only my parents in the area. I lived in the area until I was 3 and then moved away. Some things about me is I love to play basketball as well as watch (huge Celtics and also a pats fan) I also enjoy video games, music, the gym and just adventuring. If you know of anyone who likes those things send me a message!!!

Restaurant suggestions for rehearsal dinner of 50+ people.

As the title suggests, looking for some suggestions for restaurants or bars that can accommodate 50+ people for a rehearsal dinner before my wedding next year. Looking to find a spot with better than average food, service, and layout for a large(r) event like this!

Thanks in advance.
