Portsmouth is not dog friendly at all!

We’ve traveled to many places across the U.S. and internationally with our 9-pound poodle, and we’ve never had an experience quite like this.
When we visited this town during the summer, we were surprised by how few places were dog-friendly. Most restaurants didn’t allow dogs—even on their outdoor patios—and many parks, including some state parks in New Hampshire, prohibited dogs altogether.
What made it even more frustrating was that AI and Google indicated these parks were dog-friendly. But when we arrived, there were large signs at the entrances clearly stating that dogs were not allowed.
There were only a handful of places—mostly bakeries—that welcomed dogs on their outdoor patios. Because of that, whenever we wanted to have a proper lunch or dinner, we had to walk to Kittery or drive to another town in Maine.
While I appreciate that many shops put out water bowls for dogs, it feels contradictory to be welcoming in small ways while banning dogs from parks and outdoor restaurant seating. For travelers with well-behaved dogs, it makes the area much less enjoyable and far less pet-friendly than expected.

Careful cyclists - tourists about and almost got nailed

Was riding home near south mill pond and taking a left on court and rogers when someone from MA decided to overtake me on the left side. Could’ve taken me out or a lady if she was taking a right. The gravity of the situation didn’t land until I got home, I could’ve gotten hurt or even killed the way he was accelerating.

It’s a double yellow road so I wasn’t expecting it. Its my first year riding here and the bike blindness is real here. Just genuine disregard for cyclists. I’m a pretty relaxed guy but ol’ crowey might have to make an appearance ;) (j/k)

Just be careful out there, lots of tourist in a rush with nowhere to go

Fireworks!

First year living in Portsmouth- that was the biggest grand finale I've ever seen! Bigger than any I saw living in Seattle. Amazing! Is it like that every year?!

Heads up for those planning to watch fireworks in Portsmouth

Planning on coming to see the fireworks in Portsmouth? The City has posted "No Parking, Noon to 10 PM" on many of the side streets near the South Mill Pond. Everywhere. So please plan ahead. Come early and park in one of the garages. Or maybe just skip it this year, it will be beastly hot out there anyway.

Visiting n the 4th of July

My wife & I are visiting Portsmouth this weekend for our 20th anniversary and am curious about what to expect on the 4th. Will the city be a crazy busy and packed? Are there fireworks somewhere? Is this a crazy idea (to go on the 4th)? Also, we are going to Louie’s for dinner on Saturday. What are some other things we should do, see and eat? Thank you!

Businesses/activities open on July 4th

I'm a local and all of my plans for the fourth fell through today. I would really love to fill the void with some sort of activity or something, but, well, it's a holiday, so most things are closed. Does anyone have any recommendations for places to go/things to do as a single person?

Portsmouth, NH

Taking a road trip with 3 kids to Maine soon and planning on making a stop in Portsmouth. Is there a particular neighborhood that’s good for checking out/getting a general vibe for the town and grabbing some lunch? Only gonna have a few hours.

Gluten free restaurant recommendations in Portsmouth or Kittery?

Hi everyone, I'm so excited to be visiting the Portsmouth/Kittery area soon! I've been trying to research some good restaurants in both cities with gluten free options, but I thought it might be helpful to ask here for recommendations as well.

I don't have celiac so very minor cross-contamination isn't really an issue, but I do have a gluten intolerance that can cause some bad allergy-type reactions if I were to be told something is gluten free but it ends up having gluten anyway. Basically just need to know the restaurants I go to are knowledgable about what has gluten and what doesn't.

Thank you in advance for any help! :)

23F Relocating to Portsmouth – Looking for Female Roommate/Housing

Hi everyone!

I'm a 23f from Texas who is relocating to the Portsmouth area for a new graduate RN position. My start date will likely be either November or January, so I'm beginning my housing search early.

I'm looking for either:

  • A female roommate, or
  • A furnished room, guesthouse, or studio.

My budget is ideally around $1,800/month, but I could go up to around $2,000 for the right place.

A little about me: I'm clean, respectful, easygoing, and pretty social. Outside of work I enjoy trying new coffee shops and restaurants, staying active, exploring new places, and relaxing with a good TV show or movie. I'm excited to meet new people as I make the move! I'm also pet-friendly.

Since I won't have a car initially, I'm hoping to find something reasonably close to Portsmouth or in a walkable/bike-friendly area.

If you have a room available or know of any leads, I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to send me a message. Thanks!

RIP Savers (2010-2026)

After serving bargain hunters at Fox Run Mall since September 2010, Savers is officially gone as part of the mall demolition.

For many Seacoast locals, it was the place for hidden gems, last-minute Halloween costumes, and weekend treasure hunts.

While it’s the end of an era for Savers, it’s also the beginning of a new chapter. The former Fox Run Mall site is set to be transformed into Seacoast Landing, a major mixed-use redevelopment planned to bring new housing, retail, restaurants, entertainment, and public spaces to Newington.

Local Band playing at Jimmy’s On Congress

Come and support the winner of the Granite State Blues Society Blues Challenge, The Blues Express at Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club on July 13. New Hampshire natives Sebastian Keen and Nick Spencer went to shows at this venue while in high school. Now both are attending Berklee and have an opportunity to perform there.

Comedy at The Music Hall Lounge Saturday!

Hey all,

Wanted to share this once more, as I will be performing Saturday!

TLDR: I am a standup comedian in Boston with my first solo show in Portsmouth, and would love to get a crowd together! Also if you've never been, it's a great venue!

___

Hey Portsmouth - My name is Andrew Della Volpe and I am a comedian from Boston that you have most likely never heard of!

I have had a lot of fun performing in Portsmouth (and your entire state) over the last few years opening for bigger acts like Jimmy Cash, Bob Marley, Juston Mckinney and Jimmy Dunn.

I am coming for my own shows, for pretty much the first time, on June 27th at The Music Hall Lounge, and I would love if you considered coming out.

Totally understand that seeing an unknown comedian is a risk, but my current show is a lot of fun and something I am working on nightly in clubs and bars! The Boston Globe recently referred to me as a "Comedian on the Rise."

My comedy is story driven and mostly about family and being newly married. I am 31 years old, and the show is fun for all ages!
