farmstand for fresh tomatoes and basil?

hello, portsmouth!

I'm doing a thing next weekend and I'm going to need some good fresh tomatoes and basil.

I'm not looking to break the bank and I'm not looking to drive all over creation. do you have any suggestions?

it's arcane insignia question time!

I'm trying to put two position pins on an adult tab for a newly minted adult Girl Scout who has volunteered for my service unit team.

I THINK it's supposed to have the fastener on the top side.

is it SUPPOSED to take multiple hours to get them on straight? does anybody have any tips?

camp milestone

this year is my 20th year at Girl Scout camp.

I was a camper, then I took a year or two off and then I was a counselor and then I took some decades off and now I'm a counselor again. I am the CIT instructor.

on Friday they'll be pinning my staff tie with a 20 year pin, and I get to choose who will do me the honor.

there is a camper who has been at our camp one more consecutive year than I have. she will also be graduating our CIT program. That's who's pinning me.

I may burst with pride and there will be crying for sure.

auto lock won't turn off?

my GM-30 PRO was working just fine until all of a sudden and for no apparent reason it turned on auto lock and while I CAN keep pressing the button to unlock it, when I try to change the radio setting to turn off unlock, the screen freezes and the radio won't turn off, requiring me to remove the battery.

once the battery is replaced I can do most things but turn auto lock off.

any ideas?

I did a thing today.

I had a DAY today, and I'm half anonymous here so I'll tell you.

I'm a bugler. mostly I bugle for camp, but I know all the standard US service calls and some of the historical ones. I can play last post and the rouse if I am asked to. My relationship with my country and my government is complicated. My relationship with the families of veterans is not.

so this morning I put on my adult Girl Scout uniform, made sure my pins were all straight, and I left the house at ten thirty. I drove eighty seven miles and was out a little over four and a half hours. I visited seventeen cemeteries, mostly ones on rural backroads.

I played attention and taps.

At many cemeteries there was nobody there but me and the dead. No matter; the dead with nobody to remember them still deserve the same honors. At a small hidden cemetery with no road going to it, on my way back to the car I saw the neighbors stood to attention, hats off. At two cemeteries the families of the dead were gathered with lawn chairs and picnic coolers. I could not see them as I played; I was positioned out of their view, at the top of a rise. I like to look for the place in a cemetery that will best respect who I am there for. I come quietly and leave quietly.

At some of the cemeteries families were there to tend graves. At one, an elderly widow was leaving in her car and she waited until I was done, window rolled down, blocking traffic. nobody seemed to mind.

The thing that wrecked me was the next to last cemetery of the day. I found my place, back to the woods, facing the dead.

Have you ever played taps? when it mattered? it's only twenty four notes long, but you can't break. it has to be right. And when I had done what I had come to do I held the silence for a moment, lowered the bugle, and began to walk back to my car.

And I saw a woman, maybe a decade younger than me, standing with her family and crying over a grave.

That's it, I guess. at 3 PM I was in the cemetery nearest my home. there's a thing called Taps Across America where buglers go out on Memorial Day and play taps at 3 pm local time.

Well. that's another year done. Next time I play taps it will be for bedtime at camp, a very different feeling.

Good night, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides everywhere.

here's an esoteric question for old timers and insignia nerds: where is the proper place on an adult uniform to wear a Macy pin?

EDIT next day for those who have interest: I asked a person at my council and she said that your Macy pin goes on the left next to your pin tab. If there's room on your pin tab it can go there. She was not sure if it goes above or below your highest award pin. And usually that's a Gold Award, but some of us are old and have First Class or even Curved Bar.
