r/RYO

Just started RYO and I need some suggestions
Literally just started RYO last friday night and I've rolled 2 packs worth of cigs, are these good enough? What part of it can I improve? All inputs, suggestions or critics will be greatly appreciated, let me know what yall think!
CROSS ROAD
The taste is decent, with a sweet aroma, but the strength is average
Any Cheper Rolling machines?
I have been using one of those things where you push backwards on the thing but its annoying to fill it up, sometimes it fails yada yada yada. Im annoyed by it, I wanna get one where you put multiple tubes in, put tabak in one side and it just works. idc if its electric or you gotta pull a lever for it. any ideas? thanks
This has been my daily smoke for several weeks now. Absolutely perfect. Robust, bold aroma and taste, high throat hit and nicotine. I'm making another batch now...I finally found The One!
I'm more of a classic paper person and I know Juicy Jay's aren't tobacco papers but I must say not bad with Karelia Dark Blue once in a while
A challenging goal: re-create a subtle profile
Hi everyone, I am very glad to be a new member of this community
I’m in my 50s and have been smoking for about 30 years.
I’m not really a straight cigarette smoker, I’ve mostly used pre-made cigarettes or tobacco as a base for another herbal blend I use.
I’m currently based in the Netherlands, where there are plenty of legal options besides tobacco.
Before that, I lived in Canada, where I got used to a particular brand, Matinée, especially the Matinée Subtle version.
For almost ten years, I used that tobacco, with the paper and filter removed, to roll my own smokes.
What I liked about it was how light and neutral it was > very little throat hit, almost like breathing warm air. That made it especially useful as a blending base.
Now that I’m back in Europe, I’ve spent a lot of time and money trying to find something similar.
I’ve read forums, asked around, and even tried getting help from AI, but without much luck.
I’ve gone through pouches, fine-cut, shag, pre-made cigarettes, additive-free products, and more, but nothing really hits the same.
The European market just doesn’t seem to offer what I’m after.
At this point, I’m thinking I may need to figure out how to recreate that smooth Canadian-style blend myself , something with almost no flavor at all.
Based on years of using it, my guess is that the blend is mostly bright and orange Virginia flue-cured tobacco, maybe with a bit of Red Virginia, plus a pinch of some air-cured leaf like White Burley or Maryland.
I know big companies keep their recipes secret, so that’s just my best guess.
The flavor is very neutral overall, with only a slight acidic edge, which is fine for my purposes as a blending base.
So I wanted to ask: do you think it would be possible to get close by buying raw leaf, casing it, shredding it, blending it, and maybe aging it for a few days while using the usual methods to smooth it out?
Or shall I more directly try to purchase carefully selected pipe tobacco to make my own blend instead ? Both maybe ?
I’ve attached a photo of the Matinée Subtle tobacco. As you can see, it’s a wild cut and fairly bright in color overall.
Rolling tobacco to bring back to the US?
hey guys, I just landed in Rome, and I have a tabaccheria right next to my airbnb. So far I’ve had davidoff cigarettes when I was in Athens and loved the flavor and smoothness compared to back home. although I don’t know what to bring back with me. what kind of rolling tobacco is great for flavor? and just overall a great pick.
A Smoking Hot but Humid Day
I didn't like Smoking filter tubes when I first got them but they grew on me. Neutral taste. George Karelias tastes even better with them.
Rollin up
Usually I dont use ciggarete cases, because I also take with me rolling machine, tobacco pouch and rolling papers in my jacket. But now because of hot weather I dont wear jacket. So I have to roll cigs before I go out and put it to case from my friend.
Cheap RYO tobacco sites?
I know I should be buying through duty free but I haven’t got a passport. Are there any sites you could recommend to buy GV yellow 50g pouches please? £27 a 30 pouch is killing my bank account
Need more bite/nicotine
Basically the title. For the years I’ve been smoking I have ONLY ever smoked full flavor Marlboros. I’ve tried RYO several times to try and cut my financial costs back. But I always give up because I have never found a tobacco that has anywhere near the nicotine content I need, nor that sharp “bite” that Marlboros have on inhale. I most recently tried OHM Extra Bold as a recommendation from someone else. It’s better than others I’ve tried but still doesn’t come close to hitting the right spot for me.
Any recommendations, or is RYO just not for me?
Thanks!
New to roll your own
What's the sweetest tobaccos you guys have tried ? Im not sure if i can use aromatic tobacco or not if so what's some options ? I've been smoking camel non filtered so if anyone knows some close to or exactly the flavor that'd be appreciated as well, almost $20 a pack in united states new york
Dark Horse: two tubes companies with the same name (I think)
Was looking at Smokers Outlet Online this morning and noticed a new product, Dark Horse tubes. When I saw them and thought "wait a minute, those look nothing like the Dark Horse tubes that I know", so I did some digging. I eventually found out that these American Dark Horse tubes are produced by A&T Tobacco while the European ones are made by Bista Standard. I don't think these two companies have any relation, but nobody is talking about this and I'm a little confused. Can someone confirm this?
RYO Options for Alberta?
Anyone know of ways to get European style tobacco in Edmonton, Alberta? I was looking at whole leaf tobacco but taxes from the provincial government are stupidly high. I've been smoking Drum Original, but again, its expensive at almost $60 CAD for a 50g pouch.
Feels like I'm shit out of luck here
Hi tobacco non additives review
Got this tobacco. Price is little bit high, 1080 yen 6.7$
My guy recommended me this because it have unflavored sweet flavor, also shop manager said that its better then "virginia gold" so I got this. There is 78mm(not 70mm) branded paper inside, which unusual for me.
The taste is good, clean, smooth. But I wish it has richer taste.
Rolled cigarette being wet
Is there any way I can get back the tobacco from a wet cigarette ? Either from rain, water, humidity...
Or anyway to be able to smoke it later ?
Do you care about ash?
Ok I know this is a controversial topic in the smoke community. My question is basically if you notice difference in quality, smoothness, flavor etc based on the ash.
In my personal experience and having been growing my own smokes (not necesarily tobacco) a white ash means a plant much cleaner, well cured and without lots of chlorophyll and nutrients left-overs (especially nitrogen and some heavy metals). Although I do understand that are types/strains that have naturally a more obscure ash, but generally speaking (in my personal experience, again) a white ash means a much cleaner smoke.
What’s your take?
Edit: not only the colour, also how it burns, how solid it is, if it fly away after two tokes.. the consistency.
