Image 1 — Day 103: Last night I topped all the Bosikappal and all of the Stag Horns in front yard and plot #2. Next up harvest in 2 weeks. I left the 2 biggest Bosikappal go to seed for my stash. Orinocos should be blooming in about a week as they went outside a week after all the rest.

For seeds always pick the nicest and biggest plant. If you have other varieties around and want to keep the seed's genetics intake and pure you need to bag them to avoid crossing them with the others. In this case I'm not bagging because I want to have a Bosikappal/Orinoco hybrid to see if I can grow a Bosikappal with more nicotine. There's a couple stag horns there that won't hurt if it adds size to the hybrid.

Follow up post to the towel colour curing method for newcomers. When they reach the ratio of yellow pertinent to your local ambient humidity..use a needle and thread, sow through the stems and hang to complete curing and drying. Sow back to back, face face, etc...like in the towel stack.

If you are in a dry climate you'll want the leaves to be 90-95% yellow at least to avoid drying green or chlorophyll blotches stuck in the lamina. If you're in a hot and humid area, like me in Montreal in July and August, you can aim for 60-70% yellow then hang. Once the process of yellowing is started and humidity is high it will complete itself rapidly while hanging. The needle and thread method allows you to slide the leaves closer together or more apart like vertical blinds depending if you want to speed up or slow down the drying process. You want your leaves to complete the yellowing process and dry slowly but not too slowly that it starts to mould. Checking them regularly is key to having a nice cure. As they dry they will start to have their final colour. Different varieties dry different colours. Virginias usually end up a yellow or gold, burleys usually finish with a caramel light or dark brown, dark Virginians like the Stag Horn in the picture will be a dark red/burgundy or dark brown. The leaves change colour gradually as they dry. Once the lamina is dry, the middle stem will usually have moisture left in it, make sure the middle stem is 100% dry and snaps if you bend it before putting your leaves in an airtight environment. I move the leaves from the line to a box for a few weeks to complete the stem drying and do a natural fermentation before it's 100% dry and ready to jar/bag.

Day 102: Full blown heat wave with high humidity in Montreal, the tobacco is loving it. The Bosikappals are all in bloom, I will top them in a couple of days. Stag Horns going strong averaging 5'-6' high already and a few more sets of leaves to come. Orinoco doing well and on par.

Picture #1: Bosikappal blooming in plot #2. Picture #2: Stag Horns growing some major height in plot #2. Picture #3-#4: Front yard grow with Bosikappals blooming.

Day 100: 🇨🇦Happy Canada day🇨🇦 A fun post today showing off front yard Bosikappal blooming, Orinoco and Stag Horns. Tiger lillies have flowered, upside down tomato making a lot of fruit and my 30 year old grapefruit tree started from seed in the late 90's putting out fresh leaves.

Day 99: I picked up the dirt leaves from the Stag Horns(bottom 4 leaves). For new members who may have heard of "towel colour curing method", this is it. Stack face to face, back to back, etc...wrap in a dry towel and put a weight on it👇

When you choose to do this method make sure there's no dirt or water on the leaves. Open the towel once a day and restack the leaves changing side and wipe any moisture with a paper towel. Picture #1 is how they should be stacked, I do a maximum of 30-40 leaves per stack. Picture #2 is how you wrap the towel loosely, fold the edges and add a weight on it to press the pile down.

Once the leaves are approximately 80-90% yellow they can be strung up with a needle and thread and hung to dry. The time to turn from green to yellow will vary on the variety of tobacco, how long it has been on the plant and environment(ambient humidity and temperature where you're keeping them).

Day 99: Plot #2. Stag Horns are into the rapid vertical growth phase, getting huge. Bosikappal are blooming right on time. Orinoco are good(planted outside 1 week after the others).

Day 99: Front yard grow. Bosikappal, pictures #3-#4, is blooming right on time(50 days post transplant outside). OG Orinoco is doing some major vertical growth, should bloom in about 10 days.

Day 93: Bonne St-Jean Baptiste holiday Quebec! I went to do a quick visit at plot #2, everything has exploded with the return of the sun.

Day 91: Front yard grow. Sun is finally out and it will be hot. No rain in the forecast until the end of the week, will give a chance to the ground to dry.

Day 91: The sun and hot weather is finally back after a week of grey and rain. Took out the scooter to plot #2 this morning. Everything looks amazing. The row of Orinocos on the right hand side is smaller, they were my extras, planted one week after the others.

u/WinChunKing — 14 days ago

Day 89: Because of all the rain and crappy weather I hadn't gone to plot #2 in a few days. I went just now and it's looking amazing. Now if only it can stop raining.

u/WinChunKing — 15 days ago

Day 88: It's been grey and raining all week. The sun finally just came out. It's been hot and humid and rain stopping for a few hours here and there so drainage was fine. Growing so fast the plants were on their sides until the sun came out and stood right back up.

Day 85: The sun and heat is back this morning. Got some major growth after the last 2 cloudy/rainy days. I did a quick weeding on plot #2 this morning. Won't need to water at all this week, it's supposed to rain Thursday. The plants are loving the extra space I was able to give them on plot #2.
