Picked my first stalks the other day

It has been 4-6 weeks since topping. Layers were progressively changing color so I decided it was time. They've been hanging since Wednesday. Another week or two and they should be done. I'll dry them and then wait to ferment until everything is harvested.

2 Florida Sumatra and 1 CT broadleaf.

Follow up post to the towel colour curing method for newcomers. When they reach the ratio of yellow pertinent to your local ambient humidity..use a needle and thread, sow through the stems and hang to complete curing and drying. Sow back to back, face face, etc...like in the towel stack.

If you are in a dry climate you'll want the leaves to be 90-95% yellow at least to avoid drying green or chlorophyll blotches stuck in the lamina. If you're in a hot and humid area, like me in Montreal in July and August, you can aim for 60-70% yellow then hang. Once the process of yellowing is started and humidity is high it will complete itself rapidly while hanging. The needle and thread method allows you to slide the leaves closer together or more apart like vertical blinds depending if you want to speed up or slow down the drying process. You want your leaves to complete the yellowing process and dry slowly but not too slowly that it starts to mould. Checking them regularly is key to having a nice cure. As they dry they will start to have their final colour. Different varieties dry different colours. Virginias usually end up a yellow or gold, burleys usually finish with a caramel light or dark brown, dark Virginians like the Stag Horn in the picture will be a dark red/burgundy or dark brown. The leaves change colour gradually as they dry. Once the lamina is dry, the middle stem will usually have moisture left in it, make sure the middle stem is 100% dry and snaps if you bend it before putting your leaves in an airtight environment. I move the leaves from the line to a box for a few weeks to complete the stem drying and do a natural fermentation before it's 100% dry and ready to jar/bag.

PA broad. About 2 months old. Is it getting close to harvest?

Growing mine in pots like last year. Storms and heat have been bad this summer though. Hoping it can atleast make ot to harvest. Last year all of them died due to hail. Set them up with a support structure this year with marigolds. The thicker stems and wider canopy of yhe flowers provide some shelter from the weather.

How am I doing? Day ???

I started these Havana 608 seeds inside in late march/early April. Transplanted outside near the end of may. Everyone seems real happy except the middle guy who I suspect is being robbed of sunlight.

In Utah, zone 7b and I’ve never grown tobacco before. Starting to research harvesting and curing so if anyone has some good resources I’d love to read them!

Are these brown spots mold or okay?

So I'm doing towel curing and a lot of the leaves have started yellowing, but one has these brown dots, is this okay or is it mold and if so, should I remove this leaf?

Just transplanted

Hey friends I was hoping for your opinion on my Virginia gold crop. I started 48 sprouts, then down to 24, then down to 12. Lost one to the wind yesterday. I live in the California desert so it’s hot and windy. I built a shade enclosure and to provide shade but also protect from the wind gusts. Are they looking okay so far? They sprouted May 29th and these photos are from today. Cheers and please comment your thoughts and opinions.

My little nicotiana rustica seedling

The last time I made a post about this plant it was a tiny seedling with just cotyledons, which was 19 days ago. I transplanted it yesterday from a mini pot. That was my best transplant work on any plant because i used the technique where you make a hole with the previous pot in the soil of the new pot. I really hope that my neighbor takes good care of the plant when I'm on vacation. When I have more info on when to harvest and how to cure, I would try to make some dry nasal snuff for a strong nicotine buzz, if i grow the plant properly for a high alkaloid content.

Transplant Progress - Western New York

Some stunting in the beginning days/weeks, but I have been pleased with the recovery and growth. It has been quite sunny and hot in our area, fantastic progress in recent days. I’ve noticed some holes in the leaves that I’ve attributed to insects/slugs in my yard. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Did I ruin anything here?

Photo 1 - anatolian/oriental a few of the leafs are showing this darker patches as in the middle leaf, others are yellowing out nicely like the left leaf, and they have a smell, like a mango or avocado sort of smell, could it be mold? They didn't dry all that well?

Photo 2 - Virginia bright leaf, just left it there as a comparison because they were picked on the same day

Is this plant tobacco or just a lookalike?

There are two separate flower colors; pink and yellow, but I’m pretty sure they are the same plant altogether.

Do my tobacco seedlings look off?

Hey y’all. I’m a Cherokee descendent learning how to grow tobacco. Some of the seedlings look a little off. Like there’s discoloration or some kind of abnormal leaf growth. Please give me your opinions and let me know what you’d do differently!

First timer. Does it matter how long the leaves dry for as long as they end up brown?

Practicing drying with some ground leaves. The leaf on the left is dry as a bone (50% humidity outside). It dried in just a few days. Is it bad that it dried so fast as long as it ends up brown in the end?
