Healthy Option Recommendations in the NC Triangle Area

Hello everyone,

I was seeing if I can get some help looking for recommendations.

I am about to move out in a couple of months and am trying to do some planning on healthy eating options. Tryna go from primarily eating fast food to at least eating in (something that isn't pizza rolls and Eggo waffles). I lost weight (about 55 lbs) before by watching my diet, and then gained all the weight back due to poor mental health choices. But, I'm back on the band wagon and am trying to commit myself to eating healthier.

Not too much criteria in what I'm looking for. Just trying to eat a little more organic (not all chemicals are bad, from my understanding). I don't have any dietary restrictions.

I'm only one person, so I prefer meals that are mainly one serving, if not two depending on portion sizing.

I'm not fully sure how to budget this, but I'm guessing no more than $10 a meal. Can be either pick up options, or delivery services. No preference.

Clean Eatz Warning…

Hey guys, just a heads-up for anyone ordering from Clean Eatz Kitchen.

I recently got my third order from them, and after thinking for the last few weeks that the XL bowls didn’t really seem much bigger than the regular bowls, I decided to weigh them.

The XL Beef Taco Bowl was only 15g heavier than the regular Beef Taco Bowl, including the packaging, but somehow the label shows a 160-calorie and 16g protein difference. The XL says 520 calories and 50g protein, while the regular says 360 calories and 34g protein.

I’m having a hard time seeing how that adds up, and now I’m questioning how accurate the nutrition labels are in general.

I’m in a pretty strict calorie deficit right now, so if the regular Beef Taco Bowl is actually way higher in calories than listed, that’s pretty frustrating. I reached out to support to see what they say, so I’ll update this thread when they get back to me.

Has anyone else had anything like this happen with them? It’s a shame because the food is actually really good, which is why I kept ordering it.

I keep seeing negative things but I'm really digging Cook Unity - am I the only one?

I'm in my second week of Cook Unity and to be honest, I think the food that I picked out for meals is fantastic, and am loving the service. I look at some of the subreddits and feel like I'm the only one? Anyone else loving the food and service? I had some questions for them, they responded right away (within like an hour, tops), so I don't even understand all of the "they don't respond" issues.

Am I for some reason just special or something (which would be nice but not likely) :)

Just wondering if there's other POSITIVE experiences like mine, with them? I'm planning on staying so idk.

Factor? Cook Unity? Meal services toronto?

Can't be bothered to cook / meal prep anymore. Thinking of subscribing to factor, but I don't eat beef and am not a massive turkey guy.

Not sure how the reviews are for Factor, I have heard it's improved a lot recently, but since I will be primarily sticking with chicken for protein, I wanted to ask: is factor's chicken good? or is it dry like most places. If I'm going to keep their chicken meals in the fridge and am expected to eat it over a course of 5-6 days will it be super chewy and dry or can i expect it to be juicy and moist.

Any other meal services if you guys could recommend would be much appreciated too!

Tried Factor and Thistle

I only ordered 4 meals from Factor and I canceled right away. Very small and looks so unappetizing as opposed to how they look online. They weren't terrible tasting but I ended up giving my husband my last 2 bc I didn't feel like eating them.

I love fresh vegetables so I was excited to order Thistle. Finished 4 in my first week but really I can't eat salads that often! 1 of the 4 was pad Thai so that mixed it up a little but it's not real pad Thai, 30% noodles and veggies. They are tasty since they mix other healthy fresh and textured variety ingredients in but I think I've stomach my last salad! I was going to cancel but thought I'd give it another week and am expecting pasta and risotto in next week's delivery. We'll see how that goes.

“Cooked” Unity

Has anyone else been having delivery issues the last few weeks? Last week my order shipped w/o cold packs. This week with the updated shipping service the order never arrived. What’s worse is the customer service; there is no number to call you have to use their online chat function. And forget about getting a refund back to your card they train their representatives to disregard card refund request and give it back in store credit then promptly end chat. I’m done with this service the food quality has been going downhill gradually since I started last year.

Factor in Freezer for 1 year

Found this factor meal in the bottom of my freezer. Says enjoy by 5/21/2026 it’s 5/14/2026 so not quite a full year yet. I don’t care about the taste but can I eat it without dying?

CookUnity - Done Before I Started

Signed up for CookUnity. Chose Thursday deliveries. Made first order. Will arrive in two days.

Since then, received one email - order picked out for me for following Thursday - put it on hold.

Today, a text. An order arriving for me this Sunday. Too late for me to hold it or pause, etc. Who needs that much food?

Of course, cant cancel subscription until after first delivery, for some reason. Will cancel with relief. Seems like a scam. Poor UI as well. What a disappointment.

Cost per serving vs restaurant delivery

Hi all, I am looking to try a ready meal service to attempt to curb my restaurant delivery habit. For those who have done the math - what would you consider the cost per serving of the ready meal services you've tried vs restaurant food? I know individual meal sizes and restaurant costs vary, but I'm just trying to get a general idea as to whether or not it's worth it - thanks.

Blue Apron Ready Meals arrived between 40 - 50 degrees F, but ice packs are all mostly frozen still

Hi all, curious what everyone thinks, I had a blue apron delivery arrive today(at 10am), it was supposed to arrive yesterday by end of day (they shipped with ontrac of course..). So it sat in a delivery vehicle all day yesterday but for some reason the delivery driver decided not to deliver it (or couldn’t, not sure, but it’s a bit irritating either way lol).
They reloaded it today on another delivery vehicle and delivered it this morning around 10am.
I didn’t pierce the plastic packaging to stick the thermometer in the actual food as I don’t want to spoil the food more potentially, but all packs arrived at temps between 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit, but the ice packs were all still mostly frozen.
Normally I wouldn’t hesitate to eat these, but I recently found out I am pregnant and am feeling hesitant. I already packed them into the freezer but was curious others experience.
Would you eat these? Or should I message blue apron for a refund and not eat them?
Thanks all!

Cookunity - First Order

I just received my first Cookunity order this week and I’ve been pleasantly surprised!

I decided to try a meal delivery service for a few reasons, the top 3 being:

  1. Reduce food waste (I live alone and don’t usually get through all my groceries before they go bad)

  2. Save time, energy, and money (I work full time and often don’t have the time or energy to make lunch or dinner, so I end up ordering food instead)

  3. Reach health goals (I count calories and macros, so having meals made for me with these targets in mind makes eating this way so much easier!)

I originally was going to try Factor since they market themselves as the best choice for fitness/health goals, but so many reviews were disappointed in their meals and service overall. So I decided to use Cookunity and I have loved it!

The meals are flavorful, cooked well, and lots of variety. Most importantly, they arrived cold and on time. I also love how they have plenty of options that fit my goals (less than 600 calories, high protein, etc).

I have another order coming in this week and I can’t wait! Feel free to ask me anything you’d like to know :)

Cook unity good for those with a sodium sensitivity?

I am looking to start a ready meal service. Based on the research I have found I believe Cook unity is the answer I’m looking for. I have done freezer meals like hungry man and mega bowls in the past, and I have to be really careful around those because the excess sodium makes me sick. For those in a similar boat, how has unit been for you? If there is another ready meal service, you recommend, I am more than happy to take that information as well.

I'm new to ready meals. I have never tried any of them, unless it was some microwave frozen ones back in the day. Anyways, I'm looking for recommendations. I'm looking for something for lunches to take to work, and I do have access to store cold meals, and for any that need reheating. I do not have any diet restrictions. What I'm looking for is something that's satisfying and on the healthier side. I have a very active job, so being hungry 2 hours later is annoying. I'm not picky (I hate peas and bleu cheese, that's about it). I just didn't want to go off ordering something that might be gross or not very balanced. Also, price point isn't a huge deal for me. Thanks in advance!

Deceptive Advertising Practices CookUnity

I signed up for a CookUnity trial account and was charged several days later. While I may have agreed to terms at sign-up, those terms were not presented clearly or conspicuously, and I was never meaningfully informed that CookUnity would select meals for me without my active approval and charge me immediately. My account has since been cancelled, but CookUnity is refusing to issue any refund.

This violates California law in two key ways:

BPC § 17602 (Automatic Renewal Law): California requires that automatic renewal terms including what will be charged, when, and how meal selections work be disclosed "clearly and conspicuously" before a purchase is completed. Burying these terms in fine print or a checkbox does not satisfy this standard. I was not meaningfully informed that random meals would be placed in my basket and charged without my active selection or confirmation.

BPC § 17200 (Unfair Competition Law): Charging a new trial customer for meals they never personally selected, then refusing any refund upon cancellation, is an unfair and deceptive business practice regardless of buried terms of service.

My account has been cancelled. I am requesting only a full refund of the charges made without my meaningful consent. This is a reasonable resolution that CookUnity's refusal to honor reflects poorly on their business practices.

If this is not resolved, I will file complaints with the California Attorney General's Office, the FTC, and pursue a bank chargeback for deceptive billing practices.
