Is it possible to fade in an effect on a track?

I have a wav sample that I'd like a bitcrusher effect to slowly fade onto. I know that there's a fade in/out function via automation, but I can't figure out how to get it to only affect the effect I have on the track, not the wav sample itself or the whole track

Sorry if this is obvious and I'm just clueless

Can't hear drums through headphones from audio interface only guitar.

I can hear my guitar when I play and record I cannot hear any programmed drums or loops. I see the sound bar moving that is it.

I have it plugged into my focusrite solo.

Playback on guitar recording is good but drums nope not even loops from Steven slate. I see the volume level going. The track is armed etc. No sound.

Manage Plugins

In Reaper, when opening the FX in a track, it pops up a bunch of plugins. Is there a way I can make it just show the ones I want, instead of everything? It gets annoying searching for my plugins. I'd like just for my selected ones to be there.

Where can I find the Sitala 2 vst?

Following a Reaper tutorial, I have downloaded and installed Sitala.

The Reaper tutorial was created before Sitala released it's newer, paid version. I downloaded the paid version.

The Decomposer website advertises that Sitala is available as a vst.
But the download for Mac is a standalone app.

The download button says "macs1 10.12 or later Standalone / VST / AU /AAX".

However, it seems to install a standalone app.

I guessed that perhaps the installation process also installs a vst plugin.
But Reaper didn't pick up a plugin, even after rescanning plugin folders and restarting.

What are some things you wish you knew before you started using reaper?

I am considering starting to use this DAW is I am all for the grunginess and dreaminess of what it offers, not THAT there but giving me control and even the ability to customise it.
But before I start using it and buy the license, I would really like to know what difficulties, experiences or stuff that you actually liked experienced along the way in your personal path with reaper !

Absolutely in love with reaper but having a few problems (Former Ableton user)

I started using reaper around two months ago and coming from ableton I feel like I used to be in handcuffs that have now been suddenly broken. Reaper just has so many more quality of life things that ableton just does not have. ARA being one of them, Pre Fx automation being another and then there is the track routing that is just honestly insane, I can just route out the dry signal from Addictive drums into separate trucks and then process them using my favorite plugins instead of having to used the Addictive Drums fx themselves

But one issue I seem to be running into is performance itself which comes as a surprise to me considering how lean reaper is

this happens especially if I use kontakt libraries I had a song with 2 tracks of omnisphere, 2 tracks of keyscape, 1 track of addictive drums and then 4 tracks with kontakt, now if I did the same in Ableton I would never get audio stutters or audio breaking but in reaper I seem to do and I am 100% sure this is a configuration issue. Some things that helped me intially were disabling multi core on kontakt itself and letting Reaper handle the multi threading and obviously increasing the sample rate but even still the same setup in Ableton could be handled with a much lower sample rate

I am currently not using ASIO but rather DirectSound because my Minifuse is not with me at the moement and wont be until next month

If anyone has any ideas on what I could try I would be grateful

OS : Windows 11 (unfortunately)
Processor : 8th Gen i7 (mobile/laptop)
GPU : GTX 1050 Mobile 4GB
RAM : DDR4 16GB 2x8 SODIMM

For storage I am using all SSDs so I doubt that would be causing any problems

Some plugins/vsts in case that may shine some light:

Omnisphere
Keyscape
Rigid Audio Nylon (KONTAKT)
Electric Mint (KONTAKT)
Session Bas (KONTAKT)
XLN Audio Addictive Drums
Soundtoys Suite
Waves (CLA, H-Delay, SSL, API, Puigtec)
Slate Audio Bundle
OB-X
Wavesfactory Cassette
Wavesfactory Trackspacer
Melodyne
Fabfilter Pro-Q3, Saturn, DS, Pro-MB, PRO-L2
Soothe 2
Valhalla Delay, VintageVerb and Shimmer

Rendered file sounds quieter

I import the backing track file into reaper and render it. I notice that my rendered song sounds about 5db lower compared to the original. This is done without adjusting any fader or normalized in the post process at all.

I need help! Can't get Reaper to see the Spitfire BBC orchestra.

Hey there people! I am painfully new to music and composition, but I've played around for a bit and want to compose some music using Spitfires BBC orchestra Symphony Discover sounds.

I downloaded the library last month, moved the files to Programs > Common Files > VST. Moved them out. Moved them in. Updated the file path of Reaper to find them. Nothing. Downloaded Native instruments. Nothing. Re-installed the spitfire library. Nothing. I've done everything short of throw my laptop and piano out of my building.

Honestly, I'm at the end of my rope here. All I wanted to do was make some music with these delightful sounds, but for the life of me, they will not show up in Reaper no matter what I do. I feel like I'm missing something, but I'm getting lost in all the DAW jargon. Do I need another program to play them? Do I need to install something else into Reaper so it can see the NKL files? Most people say a virtual instrument needs to be something like .vst, but they won't show up like that.

(I'm using windows, btw!) Some help would be SO appreciated!!!! Honestly, nothing has made me feel so dumb XD

Demo video: Record videos from your iPhone directly into REAPER easily

Hi folks,

I've spent the last several days creating a REAPER extension + iOS app to help me streamline the process of recording full-quality videos and getting them into REAPER super easily.

I was trying to record myself playing guitar and singing on my iPhone while also recording audio in REAPER, and finding it to be a huge hassle to get everything set up correctly, not forget to press record in one place or the other, make sure I am in-frame, transfer the video file to my computer, sync it up etc. This makes it just way easier.

Let me know if you are interested in testing it out.

You need an iOS device and either Windows or macOS for REAPER. May look at Linux and Android support later but for now I'm just seeing if it's worth paying the $99 Apple tax to distribute the app for free on the App Store.

Auto punch recording with pre-roll + post-roll that stops automatically?

I’m trying to replicate a Pro Tools-style punch-in workflow in Reaper and I’m close, but stuck on one key behaviour.

What I want is:

Pre-roll playback before recording starts
Auto punch in on a time selection
Record only that section
Include a short post-roll after the selection
Then automatically stop transport (without me pressing spacebar)

What I’ve got working so far:

Auto-punch time selection is enabled
Pre-roll is enabled and working correctly
Recording enters and exits the time selection correctly

The problem:

Reaper will happily record through the time selection, and I can extend the item to include pre/post-roll audio, but I cannot get it to automatically STOP after the post-roll. The transport just keeps running (and recording audio) past the time selection boundary until I manually stop it.
Like, if I highlight 2 bars, and set either some metronome pre-roll or extend the (unlinked) time selection prior to punch point, I can capture everything prior to the punch, but only display the punch audio, yet when the punch out finishes (visually) transport continues past the time selection (which I have set for a couple of beats past the punch area) and recording continues until I press space bar to stop transport. Reaper records everything from transport start to transport stop.

I’ve tried:

“Stop playback at end of loop if repeat is disabled”
Ensuring loop/repeat is off
Using time selection-based workflows
Looking at SWS Cycle Actions as a workaround (which I need to investigate further, currently)
But I can’t find a clean way to make Reaper behave like Pro Tools where it automatically stops after the punch + post-roll window.

Is there a known method for this? Ideally something that:

respects pre-roll
respects auto-punch time selection
and stops automatically at end of selection (including post-roll)

I’m on latest release on macOS.
Any ideas appreciated — I feel like I’m missing something obvious or a standard workflow here.

Project won’t load - plugin failure?

Hi all, was just about to render a guitar loop I made as usual- and the program crashed on me. I’m able to load reaper up and bypass plugins, but when I try to re enter the project it takes impossibly long to load things, which is odd since I’ve made about 50-60 loops of the same nature in the past and haven’t encountered this issue. Clearly it’s a problem with the plugin itself and not the program- what is the fix here? Do I uninstall and re install the plugin?

Falling in love with this DAW. Starting to fall down the customization rabbit hole. Can anyone help me save some time before I go too far down?

Switching over from Logic, and feel like I'm in a candy shop now. I get a little tunnel vision once I'm handed freedom like this and can easily spend hours tweaking before I've even started using programs or products like this. I'm just starting to climb out the god forsaken plugin rabbit hole, and in the same vein now have a plethora of FX that I havent even begun to use.

I've been following Rtips guide. Downloaded Rpack. I just know once I start scratching the surface of whatever is in there I can easily get lost again, and god forbid I just discovered I can download even more repositories and omfg... TEMPLATES? I saw Rtips metal mixing package, starting looking into it, and now I'm here bc I know where I'm headed otherwise lol.

So, with Rtips guide still in mind, can anyone point me towards a less meandering path with what you'd consider essential and/or invaluable resources/repositories/scripts/templates/dare I say, plugins/or just some wisdom and advice on using this thing efficiently while still enjoying the freedom and power Reaper provides? And on a side note, any tips on setting up kontakt player or anything better so I can start playing with midi and vinstruments is greatly appreciated.

ps. Off subject, but I play guitar and just discovered NAM after using Natives guitar rig for the last year. I've been in heaven as far as tone now, but I saw someone mention using NAM for analog tape mixing on master tracks. If anyone has any experience with that, I'd love to learn the details of how exactly you apply and use it. Eveything regarding NAM on youtube has been catered to guitar rigs and not neccisarily mixing.

Thanks for any help or advice!

Tried to go back to Logic Pro after 6 months in reaper, I regret

Just when logic 12 came out I switched to reaper, now in the middle of a project I moved everything to logic and moved on with the project in logic, now I have to move everything back to reaper. I just wanted to remember why I appreciated reaper so much and now I appreciate it even more. Logic is buggy, slow, and so on. Only three things I like more in logic:

  1. Bounce to new track. While reaper bounces to a new take, bounce to new track I feel better so I leave the comp where it is. I’m pretty sure it can be achieved with a custom action tough.
  2. Flex Pitch. I have melodyne essential that lacks a lot of things from Flex Pitch or melodyne assistant, but I don’t want to spend money on melodyne, at least I can’t find a good discount
  3. The new chords id in logic, it makes so easy to play when you have all the chords visible on the track so you don’t have to remember.

How would you fix these three “problems”?

I need help!! My music sounds horrible

I've had reaper for a few years, want to make guitar songs (mostly metal, sometimes soft)

I'm stuck in a phase where everything just sounds like shit and it's absolutely killing my creativity, any time I think of a cool riff and play it out, it just sounds like ass, and I KNOW if these albums I like, played the exact same thing with different production, it would sound sick.

So here's where I'm stuck, I've spent $300 on different NueralDSP guitar tones trying to get the right sound. Ill make 2 guitar tracks, pan them left and right, then ill record a bassline over it with a real bass and some more plugins to make it sound nicer, then I use the free krimh drums pack for midi-drums.

Now - it sounds like what it is, 2 guitar tracks, a bass, and some artificial drums, and it just sounds SHIT. It's too robotic and has no atmosphere, basically, it doesn't actually sound like a band playing, it just sounds like shit. So I've lost all drive to make music because it sounds like ass, but then ill listen to an album and wish I could create that sound.

So what's the aspect of production that I'm missing? How do I make my tracks sound real and live, and not like just some shitty stems stacked on-top of each other.

Here's a short example of things sounding extremely flat - although I don't have any "nice" creations to share, as the mix discourages me from doing anything more than 1 riff at a time then closing the DAW in frustration.

Edit: Thankyou all for sharing your knowledge/wisdom it's super appreciated!

Pattern based workflow in REAPER?

Is there a Reaper plugin or extension that enables a pattern based workflow in REAPER?

I've used REAPER on and off for years but ultimately I started producing using grooveboxes that have pattern based workflows. Naturally, that's the way I tend to think about creating music (building loops and then creating separate sections by adding and removing things).

Right now, I tend to just have separate tracks for the original recordings of certain parts and those parts as used in the arrangement. It winds up being super cluttered, confusing and ultimately limiting as having to manage all of this on my own leads to me being a lot more conservative about what I do.

Do you all have any suggestions for plugins / extensions that could help with this?

Also, is this a deal where I should just be using a different DAW if I want this? I really don't mind REAPER for arranging and editing, it's just this specific thing that bothers me.
