In the loss of RecRoom comes a new game

The shutdown deeply saddens everyone, but on the day it shuts down, a game called Wild will be released.

The creator of Wild is hosting a large event in their game as a commemoration of the loss of a game everyone loved dearly

If you do not wish to participate that is fine, but it would be so fun to see everyone join in this event to celebrate RecRooms history (in a sense)

If you want to join the Discord for this game you can use "wildvr" in the code thing for Discord

Hopefully, I will see you all there!

The final AMA!

The final AMA!

OK, with the shutdown looming, I'm posting a call for final AMA questions.

As a reminder, the Rec Room servers will go offline at noon pacific time, June 1st. Before then, HairyManLegs has agreed to do one last AMA video with me.

So let's hear it - what questions do you have about RR or anything else? I've always said that RR is nothing without the players, so finishing up with an AMA feels like the right way to honor that.

Important caveat: I reserve the right to cherry pick the questions. There are some topics I can't really discuss due to NDAs etc, and there are some topics I just won't want to talk about in any depth. So I reserve the right to egregiously ignore questions I don't wanna answer =] I'll acknowledge them, but it may be only to say "pass"!

That said, I want to do my best to answer any lingering questions you have about Rec Room the game, Rec Room the company, or - as the acronym says - anything else.

So go ahead - AMA!

With the shutdown getting closer and closer, looking at the larger picture, investors killed this games identity and it's passion.

It's no surprise that money will always come first, especially in games. Though the downfall of this beloved VR game fell victim to pressure from investors and their money wanting to be multiplied or generated back.

RecRoom shooting up and raving in players with the 2020-2021 boom gave off a false narrative to investors, thus the game being ballooned and swelled up to a monumental $3.5 billion valuation from hype, not generation or valid numbers. It was a huge guess and a flawed one at best.

RecRoom received well over $250 million in funding. As time progressed and as COVID dwindled out, so did the hype. And as the hype died down, the pressure from investors and money payback grew larger and larger. With this mass amount of funding and expectations, RecRoom needed to expand—they needed to generate more money for these investors. They needed to multiply their cash; it wasn't all of their decisions that made it into game updates (Maker AI, Roomie). As time went on, layoffs began to appear and the push from investors grew and grew. Funding had stopped coming long before; the game was pushed into a hole it never dug authentically.

RecRoom lost its track ever since investors entered the picture. The push for AI grew, the costs grew, their size grew, and their costs multiplied. When AI came into the picture, which was an investor-type ideal to fit the needs of the AI boom to stay relevant, costs skyrocketed. The game was never about fitting ideals of the community after the soul of RecRoom and its developers were overruled by investment pressure and who led the design lead/updates.

The tragedy is that RecRoom did not fail because players stopped loving the core concept. It failed because it was forced to carry the weight of a $3.5 billion empire. The platform became a ghost of its former self because every update was viewed through the lens of maximizing investor payback rather than protecting the soul of the community. And with the abandonment of the investors and the game's funding, the game was left a huge money bleeder, too large for its own body—left by investors to sit swelled as the money only fell shorter and shorter. RecRoom wasn't meant to be a monopoly (like Roblox). Game expansion isn't bad—game expansion without a clear idea, motive, nor cost is.

RecRoom's soul was gone when its own body was infected with the ideals of investors and swelling their profits. A VR gem was killed by the greed of the system—we lost a good one, a very good one.

  • Sometimes, shooting for the stars isn't the best idea to follow—goes to show being niche isn't a terrible idea.

Thank you RecRoom, seriously for everything—too many games have been screwed over by investment swelling.

All Known Rec Room Revivals For AFTER the Shutdown

Google docs link for discord servers: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sBwtyS1qWex9X7w-JV4JsBFoXafWOJfFqa7prHMGh8o/edit?usp=drivesdk

A few weeks ago I made a post about the top Three revivals. Honestly, the ones that you can download right now (Radium, vanilla and Stella) are good, but not great. They all have limitations. Fortunately I have made a list of all of the up and coming revivals to go to in less than a week when rec room unfortunately closes down.

I just want to say real quick, some people don't want to hear this, and that's ok. I totally understand wanting to leave rec room in the past. This post is to help out people who are interested.

  1. Top pick: meow.net a 2021 rec room with custom rooms uploaded. It has almost no bugs compared to other builds and is promised for quest and PC. It will likely have PC first then add quest later. It will likely be releasing in the next week.

  2. Deluxe: a 2023 recreation with confirmed PC and quest at launch. One issue I have (honestly I have no room to complain) is they will have infinite slot. Other than that, this is currently one of the best 2023 builds and will likely be releasing either right before or right after rec room shuts down.

  3. RecPlace: you probably know this 2023 build from the cinematic trailer on tiktok. It's currently launching PC only with quest promised in the future. This is still very buggy and it will likely release after the shut down.

  4. Nebulon: 2021 recreation of rec room. It is promised before the shutdown. I'm not totally sure what platform it's releasing on but I have to guess both.

I missed a whole lot (didn't know a whole lot about others to write a paragraph for each one) so I linked these 4 servers plus all the rest I know of in the Google doc at the top.

Please let me know if I missed anything!

All of these are amazing and I am eternally grateful to them for preserving rec room.

If you know a revival or I got any info wrong in this post please let me know, thanks!

Rec Room is somehow operating on Intel 530 integrated graphics in Screen Mode at 30-40 FPS.💀

This should not even be running at all. Minimum specs are a significantly more powerful GEFORCE GTX 970 paired with the i5 (same CPU I have). Lowest detail set in the watch menu’s video settings, 720P upscaled to 900P via Windows display settings.

can we have an option to save a new report card in Rec.net instead of in game? [if we're too lazy to get on the game?]

i really wished u guys were joking...i really do :/

okay so i remebered the first time i ever saw someone playing rec room was like, 2022. it was my favourite youtuber and ever since then, i fell in love with the game, but i couldnt get it because i didnt have a VR headset; then i learnt i could get it on my phone, but i didnt have storage so i though i could never play it. Then like, a year went by, and i got my laptop and instantly got rec room on it and played it every weekend. i remember all the friends i made, all the nice pretty outfits i made and even remember the days i would play it non-stop to get more rewards and reach a higher level. i really loved rec room, it was my favourite game, i even tried getting my friends on it too.

but then school got too much and i didnt have time to stay up late and play anymore. i thought it was gonna be temporary but i havent be on rec room consecutively after 10th grade. then last year i tried to play it during my study breaks and it kept crashing and kicking me off, not to mention the times when it didn't kick me off, it would be extremely laggy and made it very difficult to play. so i didnt play it for a year until recently. i came back because im on another long break and i wanted to play and hopefully meet new friends, until i saw the news in one of the games i frequent, then i saw it on google, then in the discord server and now here.

im really sad that the game is coming to an end. i have so many fond memories of staying up late playing it, getting harassed by random people and freely exploring my sexuality with little to no judgment. rec room was truly a way for me to escape my life and helped me connect to more people. even though i dont i've lost contact with all of my friends on the game, i'll always remember them and how they made my day better. i'll miss this silly game, even though it gave me headaches from time to time, it's still my favourite game. RIP Rec Room🧡

I came up with some weapon ideas back in 2018. I can't see the old drawings because Imgurr isn't available in my country anymore so I redrew them.

If someone that can use Imgurr could check if these links still work and if so, send the images to me, I'd appreciate it.
