Where to live? New Grad working in Redwood City

Hey everyone! For context, I had a place picked out in East Bay, but then my future employer shifted me to another office due to a last minute restructure. I will now be working in Redwood City starting mid-September and need a place to live and would love some help narrowing the places to look. I am originally from the midwest so I have little knowledge of this area.

I am 23M, a software engineer, single, Vietnamese/Chinese, and from Minnesota. I don't mind a 30-45 minute commute, but shorter would be positive. I don't care for nightlife, but do enjoy meeting people my age, chill hangouts, etc. I would like to join a martial arts gym, stay active whether thats hiking, biking, golf, volleyball, etc. And walkability is a nice-to-have but I value that a lot.

If there are any recommendations based on your experience I'd love to hear about them! Was originally planning on driving down the end of next week.

Edit: Able to work hybrid, preferred to be in 4 days in office. Ideally my budget stays around 3500(?), can creep up towards 4000 if its a no-brainer.

The Broken Railroad Crossing Gates Are Gonna Get Someone Killed

It's been like this for about two months now as far as I can tell. But it's fairly common that when a train pulls into the station, and no other trains are coming, the railroad crossing gates stay down and the bells ring the entire time.

People have started doing what people do, and that's ignoring the broken warning signal. Often in very large groups at once. Even worse, depending on which side you go through the emergency gates on your visibility of a potential oncoming train is obstructed by...well...another train.

This really should be fixed immediately I'm not sure why this has been allowed. Someone is get pancaked.

Recommendations for a local Audi specialist mechanic?

We’ve been bringing our 2018 Q7 to our family’s generalist mechanic (who has done great with other car brands such as Ford, Honda, Chevy) since we bought it but unfortunately it’s not working out anymore. General maintenance and minor issues come back mere weeks after servicing and we’re now thinking we need someone specialized in Audis or at least European made cars.

Would love to have some suggestions, please and thank you!

Track & Field tracks that are open 24/7?

Are there any Track & Field tracks that are open 24/7?

Doesn’t need to be in Redwood City specifically, just within driving distance

Twins who lost parents in Peninsula street racing crash awarded $33 million

This is a follow-up on a tragic case that happened in 2022. Reporter Jason Green writes about a car crash that killed the parents of twin girls who were 7 at the time. Cesar Morales was already convicted of felony vehicular manslaughter after he crashed into the family's car while he was street racing. Now, in a wrongful death suit, a jury has awarded the orphaned girls $33 million.

The other person in the street race was also convicted.

People in apartments that are NOT rent controlled, how much more was your lease after renewal?

I’m trying to see what I should I expect my renewal % increase would be. I’m honestly thinking like 15-25% but maybe I’m out of my mind. But if it is actually that then I’ll move for sure. Wondering if anyone has any recent data points.

Junk Fee Restaurants to Avoid

Wanted to put my own personal experience here to see

Last night I went for dinner at BAO in Redwood City, and at the bottom of a long receipt was a hidden 18% service fee, which I did not notice. I ended up tipping another 18% on top of that. My pre tax bill vs my final bill ended up having more than a 50% difference because of this. We were at $18pp for the meal and it became $28pp because of this. I love BAO, but after that I won't be going back

We went for drinks at Ocean Oyster Bar & Grill after that. They added a 20% large party fee. We were 5 people, I couldn't believe it

Any other experiences people have had with this crap being forced on them at such high numbers?

How Does Redwood City work: Q&A with City Planning - Aug 20th

"Yes! in Redwood City" is a new club in town, led by people who live in Redwood City who want to make it more affordable and walkable. How does the city decide where to put bike lanes? When does something become a historic resource? Who put together the plans that turned "Deadwood City" into the vibrant downtown we enjoy today? If you've ever asked yourself these questions, you'll have an opportunity to hear the answers! We'll be hosting a Q&A with two members of Redwood City's planning staff who help shape the city. Community Development Director Sue Exline and Housing and Leadership director Alin Lancaster will be on hand to share their knowledge. Event location will be at City Hall at 4pm on August 20th. Hope to see everyone there!

Adult soccer leagues?

Anyone know of any 7 v 7 coed soccer leagues in Redwood City? Alternatively, any good pick up games ongoing? Maybe Red Morton park?

Edit: or anywhere in the peninsula. Thanks!
