Revit or Rhino? Drafting help

Guys I have to make a CD set for a small job I’ve used both revit and rhino3d and I’m comfortable with both programs. For drafting I prefer revit but I no longer have a student license and I can’t afford to pay $300 for the monthly. I bought Rhino before I graduated but idk if I can make schedules or drawing lists like I can on revit. What are my options? I’ve heard of Revit LT which I don’t mind paying for since it’s cheaper but I don’t know the limitations on that version. Would I be able to do a simple CD set on that? I do have access to my friends student revit account but can I use that for a small job? I heard there’s a student watermark or something? What’s up with that?

How would you model these metal structures using a point cloud?

So, I've been learning 3D modeling with Revit using point clouds for a while, and I'm stuck when it comes to detailing metal structures... I've researched Advance Steel a bit, it seems like a good solution.

How would you model this? In a way that isn't just a simple extrusion, I want to insert parameters and "be as BIM as possible". Tips, playlists, videos... are all welcome

Job description on linkedin

what in the job description is this...dont waste your time?? someone who is unemployed will know how difficult it is to get a job in present economy, and this kind of job description is what people have to go through, 'revit wizards' is what they want...wtf is revit architects, when you only need someone who has high knowledge of revit, why write as architect? just write as revit draftsmen...they need architects only b arch only...fucking outrageous...job description itself feels like someone high end job with so much value, where in reality job description itself is so toxic...learn to fucking write english properly, then post job description on linkedin

How did learning Revit API & Python change your career? (+ Thoughts on Erik Frits's course?)

Hey everyone,

I'm currently an architect working in the UAE. I regularly use Revit, Dynamo, Rhino, and Grasshopper, but I'm planning to transition into a specialized BIM or computational design role later this year.

To make that jump, I’m diving into architectural automation and programming using the Revit API and Python. I’d love to hear from those who have already gone down this path:

  1. The Career Impact: How did learning to program custom tools for Revit change your trajectory? Did it open doors to new roles, shift your day-to-day responsibilities, or impact your salary?
  2. Erik Frits's Course: I’m looking at professional bootcamps and specifically considering Erik Frits's LearnRevitAPI / pyRevit Bootcamp. Has anyone here taken it? How much value did it provide compared to figuring things out on your own, especially if you already have a grasp on visual programming like Dynamo?

Any insights on the learning curve, how you applied your first custom tools in a professional setting, or other resources to check out would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Side-by-side: Ncored vs Nitro opening a 200 MB construction PDF

Native macOS PDF editor I've been working on, built for users who routinely open 100–300 MB CAD/BIM exports.

Video is 1:1 — same Mac (MacBook m4 pro), same file, same moment. No edits.

Why I'm posting in here: the Mac build shipped today, Apple-signed + notarized, and you're the audience that actually notices when an app feels native.

Things this thing focuses on:

- Stays responsive on 200 MB files (pinch zoom + scroll don't stutter)

- Quick Look–style fast opening, even for 200+ page documents

- Native window controls, native file dialogs, native fonts

- Crash-safety: if it ever crashes mid-edit, your work is recovered on next open

- Memory footprint stays bounded on long sessions

Features: inline text editing, annotations + signatures (with verification), full-document search incl. text inside scanned images, page management, redaction, flatten, image export, auto-save + crash recovery.

What it isn't: a 200-feature Acrobat clone — we cut a lot deliberately.

Pricing:

- 14-day free trial, no card

- €12.99/month or €79.99/year (≈49% less than monthly). No tiers, no upsells.

Disclosure: I'm one of the makers (the team behind Noir Architects, a Baltic architecture studio that built this for our own daily work first). Honest feedback welcome, especially the rough edges.

HIDE BY ELEMENT

Hello

I'm working on a Revit project, and for convenience, I hid the context masses by element. Now, when I try to bring them back into view using the RH command, I find that the "by element" option is no longer enabled. How can I make this element visible again?

Best workflow for Site/Topography in Revit LT without Shared Coordinates? (CAD survey far from origin)

I'm working in Revit LT and trying to figure out the best workflow for handling georeferenced CAD surveys and site modeling.

In the full version of Revit, my go-to approach was to keep two separate files: one for the Building, with levels starting at 0.00 as the ground floor, and one for the Site. Then link the building into the site file and use Acquire Coordinates to sync everything up.

The problem is that Revit LT doesn't support Shared Coordinates, which completely breaks that workflow and turns coordination into a headache.

I just received a new topographic survey in CAD. It's fully georeferenced, meaning it lives extremely far from the origin, which as most of you know brings its own set of fun issues in Revit.

So what's the best way to deal with this in LT? Should I modeling at actual elevation, meaning setting Level 1 directly to its real-world height, say 445.00m, instead of starting from 0.00m. The second is relocating the survey in AutoCAD first, bringing a known reference point to 0,0,0 before linking it Origin-to-Origin into Revit LT to avoid the 20-mile precision glitch.

How do you guys handle georeferenced sites and building elevations in Revit LT without ending up with broken sections and spot elevations all over the place?

How to make curve model text

Hi is there a way to make the text more radial in terms of placement. I manage to create a radial path for each letter, however, the letters seems vertical rather that radial. I already turn off the "Always Vertical Parameter" in family category..

What should i do?

Schedule and material take-off

Hi all,

I have built a Revit model for a university assignment and I am trying to generate a BOQ/material takeoff from it. I have tried using both Schedule/Quantities and Material Takeoff, but both are mostly coming through empty.

For the schedules, I have tried adding fields such as Family and Type, Count, Length, Area, and Volume, then sorting by Family and Type and enabling Grand totals. I also made sure to tick Include elements in links, but I am still not getting much useful output.

The material takeoff schedules are also empty, even when I try to extract material fields such as Material: Name, Material: Area, and Material: Volume.

I need to extract quantities for items such as glass/windows, roof sheeting, beams, columns, and ideally most of the main model elements for pricing.

Does this usually mean something is wrong with how the model has been built, such as incorrect categories, materials not assigned, elements being in linked files, or the model using generic/imported geometry?

I am happy to share a Dropbox folder with the model if someone is willing to take a quick look and point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Panel Trim not working

I'm using curtainwall mullions in Revit to make this standing seam panel system, how do I get the panel to sit inside of the J Trim? Every time I move the J profile it just pushes the panel back.

Making Multiple Layer Faces

Hello, I'm doing a new family for a beam steel structure, and I'm facing with a problem (more like a dilema). Since this is going to be used for data collection on the materials used in the project, I'm struggling to know the best way to do this and how to do this.

This is a steel coated beam with antirust layer and enamel paint. So, what I am doing is creating thin layers and adding the antirust and the paint properties in each layer (Just like an onion).

But I'm asking now: Is there a way to do this in the solid itself, without crating thin layers (solid)? Because when the budget team looks at the materials table, It needs the correct amount used (m² and linear/m) for each thing.

Need help with aligning insulation fill with the correct material in the wall (Beginner)

So lets say I have made a sendwich wall, which uses thermal insulation 150 mm as its core (inside wooden grid - in floor plan I only want to see the insulation fill) and from both sides there are other layers of the sendwich wall. Now the fill I use for the thermal insulation is configured to fit perfectly, but in the floor plan it is shown that it is not aligned with the layer its associated to but with the outer line of the entire wall - making it not fit the correct layer. On the photo you can see that sometimes its placed correctly but I just could not replitace that - setting is same on both walls. Any help would be appreciated, it is not a big issue but it really irritates me that I can't figure this out.

Complex Gabled/Hipped Roof Modeling

Exisiting Roof Plan

Hello Revit Forum,

I am tasked with modeling this existing roof. I have modeled one roof before that was far simpler. I am wondering if I am on the right path and what my next steps should be to clean it up and complete it.

My plan of attack:

3D View

Plan View

  • Build all Gable/Hip roof elements individually (I am here)
  • Once all elements are built, cut the geometries and combine them (into one roof?)
  • Finally, attach walls to roof

As I am building each element, I am realizing that there are some issues with roof plane and eave alignment. See below:

These Roof planes ultimately need to align

The bottom of these eaves ultimately need to align

So my questions are:

  1. Am I on the right path so far?
  2. What are the appropriate commands and approaches for aligning roof planes and eaves
  3. What are the appropriate commands and approaches for cutting and joining the roof elements?

Typical Toilet Details

We currently tag every single toilet fixture and accessory in every single enlarged plan. We are trying to get away from that. One way we think is doable is having a typical sheet with different stalls and layouts. Cant decide if detail views or live modeling in the LEGENDS phase is better. a problem im seeing with detail views is for example, the Toilet Paper Holder, we have a double and a single, and both are different tags. id need a detail for every different condition. If we did a live restroom in Legends phase, there would be double checking of work if Type Marks changed (not a big deal) but the real issue im seeing is things like Sanitary Napkin Disposals which are instance based, so id need again, a detail for every condition.

What is a good workflow for toilet details that doesnt involve tagging every single instance of toilets and accessories in every single plan?
