CAD/Revit Teacher

Hi all,

I hope you’re doing well and Happy Fourth! I’m a teacher in NY who teaches “Autodesk Inventor and Revit” at the high school level. Two questions:

  1. I make 129K forgive me if this is too personal but how does that compare to industry architects?

  2. What are some projects in 2026 you recommend I try with my students for both Inventor and Revit?

Really enjoy Mechanical Drafting and Architecture but man, the kiddos are burning me out haha.

Thanks so much!

P.S. I Teach in Westchester County, NY.

Is splitting Revit models by levels/disciplines the actual industry standard, or am I overcomplicating things?

Hi everyone,

I recently finished a basic Revit/BIM postgraduate course (mostly focused on modeling). I already had some basic knowledge, but I wanted to structure it better. During our last class, we spent a lot of time discussing BIM protocols, and since then, I've gone down a rabbit hole I can't get out of.

I’ve been reading through BIM Forum and watching various conferences about standards. I noticed it’s very common to structure projects using a matrix that splits the model by both levels and disciplines, using "Master" files to coordinate everything. This means working with multiple smaller linked files instead of one massive central file.

My question is: Is this the actual industry standard, or am I getting into something that is overkill? It's not strictly required to pass my course, but I want to make the most out of it for my portfolio. The only requirement for my final submission is to write a basic "protocol" explaining my choices and how I organized the files.

If you have any literature, podcasts, lectures, or YouTube channels you'd recommend to deep dive into this, I’d really appreciate it.

Sorry for my English, it's not my first language.

Thanks in advance!

Missing Revit Default Families & Structural Steel Library – Any Reliable Sources?

Hi everyone,

I'm facing an issue where my Revit installation is missing many of the default families and templates. Is there an official procedure to download or restore the missing default Revit families separately?

Also, could you recommend reliable websites for downloading high-quality structural steel Revit families, such as:

  • Steel beams
  • Columns
  • Bracing members
  • Structural connections
  • Steel plates
  • Anchor bolts
  • Base plates
  • Structural framing components

I'm looking for sources that provide well-built, parameterized families suitable for professional structural projects.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is there any way to get a toposolid cut pattern to NOT cover up a linked model's foundations?

Toposurfaces used to be fine in this regard. My building sections would show the Earth cut pattern below my toposurface, and any other solid geometry, including foundations in the linked structural model, would show up "in front" of the toposurface cut pattern.

Now with toposolids, they appear overlapping. The Earth drafting pattern shows up on top of and in addition to the structural foundations, making it look generally like garbage.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to avoid having to draw filled regions all over every section view.

M&E refusing to update model

M&E are refusing to update their 2023 model to 2025 because they said it will cause them massive issues.

They said it will break annotation tags, mess up view templates, and screw up their families.

I'm calling bullshit on this as I've never had issues with any other M&E consultants updating models. I think these guys are just pulling a fast one as they're close to finishing and can't be bothered.

Can anyone confirm whether they're telling the truth

Preparing a dwg map drawing before import / link in

What are your tips and tricks for preparing a dwg map drawing before import / link in ?

Are there any plugins / lsp that do the flattening and clean up ?

Why does it still look like this in Revit 2025 ? 10-15 years and no improvement

P.s.: the steps I have to do in Autocad in order for Revit to be OK with it:

  1. Draw new lokal zero point
  2. save layer status
  3. turn on all layers
  4. explode all blocks (several steps until there are no more BLOCK REFERENCES)
  5. change to elevation view, select everything that is not Z=0 and group it
  6. isolate group
  7. return to plan view
  8. flatten group (often there will come error messages that have to be adressed)
  9. check in elevation view if everything is zero
  10. Restore layers
  11. copy the main area of intrest into an empty new DWG with local zero point
  12. link in Revit

Elevation and section markers specific to certain sheets?

I create drawing sets with an arch plan, mechanical plan, electrical plan and rcp. I also create an arch section and a mechanical section is there a way to have the section/elevation markers visible in the discipline views they belong in?

Wall Height

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but I'm really curious.

For multi level projects of say... 5, 15, 30 or 60 levels - would you model your walls full height or group by level and copy up.

I assume most of us with multiple years of experience have tried both methods..

Pros and cons of each?

Need help creating a parametric post-tension cable with Dynamo for Revit

Hello everyone,
I’m looking for some guidance and would really appreciate any help from the Dynamo/Revit community.
I’m developing a Dynamo script for Revit to automatically generate a parametric post-tension cable.
The goal is for the user to define:
- The cable diameter.
- The cable length.
- The deviation points (X, Y, Z coordinates).
The script should then automatically generate:
A 3D cable path (curve).
The corresponding 3D solid cable.
Ideally, I would also like the solution to be flexible enough to allow adding or removing deviation points easily.
If anyone has experience with this type of workflow (Dynamo, Python, or the Revit API), or knows of similar examples or resources, I would really appreciate your help.
Thank you in advance!

Guidance for ACP Revit Architectural

Aoa, Hello everyone,

I am a BIM Modeler, I'm transitioning into the BIM Industry after nearing my completion of my Master's in Civil Engineering with specialization focused on BIM.

I needed some guidance from professionals who have given and qualified ACP (Autodesk Certificated Professionals) Revit.

Should I take this test and get ACP? Does it have any significance in career growth? Which one should I be going for, Architectural, Structural, MEP?

C++ Redistributable Errors

Ever since we rolled out 2026 my firm has been plagued with C++ redistributable errors. It’s like playing wack a mole.

Randomly every day some user somewhere can’t launch Revit or C3D. It doesn’t just impact Revit. It impacts any Autodesk product. The fix is to go to Add/Remove programs and run a repair on the latest version of Microsoft visual C++ v14 Redistributable (x64). Sometimes this requires a restart sometimes it doesn’t.

But the fix never seem to stick and I’m losing my hair trying to identify what’s causing the issue. Is anyone else battling these gremlins? There seems to be a ton of documentation on it but no one seems to know precisely what is causing the issue (other than a firey print driver thing we don’t use).

We’re toying with applying Bh a blanket login script to apply this generic fix on login but that feels kludgy. Any suggestions?

Has anyone started using Revit 2027.1 yet? Bugs, install issues, thoughts?

Hey everyone, just checking in to see if anyone has made the jump to Revit 2027.1 yet.

We're an architectural practice and I'm the BIM Manager trying to gauge whether it's worth pushing out to the team or holding off a bit longer. Would love to hear real-world experiences before I start rolling it out.

A few things I'm specifically curious about:

  • Install experience - any roadblocks, conflicts with existing versions, or ACC/BIM 360 connector issues?
  • Stability - are you seeing crashes or unexpected behaviour on opening existing models?
  • API / add-in compatibility - anything broken with pyRevit, Dynamo, or popular third-party add-ins?
  • Performance - any noticeable changes (good or bad) to load times, sync speed, or graphics?
  • Notable bugs - anything that's caught you off guard or caused real workflow pain?

Question about conference rooms ( Revit )

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on a conference room for one of my architecture projects in Revit, and I'm feeling a bit stuck. I'm still a student, and unfortunately my instructor isn't very willing to explain what I've done wrong or suggest improvements, so I'm trying to learn from the community.

I'm mainly unsure about the best way to model the stepped seating area. Should I use floors , stairs , or another approach that's considered best practice in Revit?

I've attached my current model. I'd really appreciate any feedback on the design, modeling approach, or anything you think could be improved.

Thank you in advance!

Revit to Grasshopper and back

I’m working on a project to automate certain model configuration workflows in Revit.

For testing, I used an AI tool called AEC Model Bridge from GitHub. It can do a decent job controlling and interacting with the Revit model, but I don’t want to depend on AI every time I need to run the workflow.

Recently, I also started testing Rhino.Inside.Revit with Grasshopper, hoping to make the workflow more parametric and controllable.

The main issue I’m facing is getting the edited geometry back into Revit without turning it into dumb geometry, losing Revit data, or breaking the original model structure.

Has anyone tried a similar workflow before?

For example:

Revit model/group → Rhino.Inside.Revit/Grasshopper → parametric editing → back to Revit with proper data, categories, parameters, and relationships preserved.

Any advice, best practices, or warnings would be appreciated.

Curtain Wall / Roof mitre joins frameless corners

Hi all,

Can someone point me in the proper direction for modelling this type of “frameless” curtain wall link bridge in Revit?

Reference image:
https://i.pinimg.com/736x/0c/78/62/0c78623287660c7133c4b92c5cdf1ad9.jpg

I tried modelling it as a roof by footprint, but all the mullions end up upside down / facing inward. I also tried using roof by profile extrusion, which makes the faces orient correctly, still the mullions do not mitre properly at the edges.

What would be the recommended workflow for this type of sloped/curved glazed bridge? Would you use a curtain system, roof, adaptive components, or model the mullions separately?

Thank you.
