I’m an environmental inspector and was checking a pipeline at a creek crossing in the foothills. One joy is I get to spend a few minutes looking for hidden gems. Found this one today and I’m super curious how the quartz ( guess ) formed on this piece of what I think is basalt.

Any pros have an idea what it is / how it formed ? Thanks in advance!

Toss pile in the rain

We are getting some rain today and I happened to see my toss pile. I couldn’t help taking pictures…I love them all even though they are imperfect. 🥰

ID Request for this beaut!

I am wondering what this is! I had gotten many bags of river rock from Lowe’s years ago for landscaping and found this tonight while I was weeding. I’m in ND, but assume the rocks aren’t from here.

Any advice on Maury Mountain?

We are working our way west again from some great rockhounding out east and stopped by Maury for the first time. Not too much advice out there for how to head away from the parking area. Some say go down the hill a few hundred yards. Some say head north east down the hill. There is another, more touch dirt road that has some fresh dug pits on the left when you drive down (gem trails lists it) it's the circled area in the picture. Any tips on finding some tumbler sized surface hunting? Any tips on digging old pits? We found some shards in tailing piles so far. How far down to dig? Dig 1-2 feet or dig deep In dim pits (3-4 feet)? There alot of different layers in different pits. Any stuff to stay away from digging in or dig above or below? Thanks so much!!

Help Identifying fossils from Addy Quartzite in Northeastern Washington

These were found in the Lower Cambrian Addy Quartzite near the town of Addy, Washington. Since it's metamorphic, I knew any remaining fossils would be very hard to identify, but there are supposed to be Trilobites, Brachiopods, and Sponges in these rocks. Does anyone know what these are?
