r/RonaldoVsMessi

Hot take: The very existence of this sub is an insult to Messi.

This sub is used to debate the rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo. The fact that Messi is still being compared to Ronaldo is an insult to all of his hardwork and achievements. If this sub existed back in 2020 and before then it would've been fine but in 2026 it's surprising that a group of people are still trying to prove that Ronaldo is better than Messi and what's even more surprising is that there are people who are listening to it and trying to correct them and prove why Messi is better.

Debate

The fact that "Messi is better than Ronaldo," "There was never a debate" "Messi is miles ahead"

has to be brought up every single day with hundred of same post, discussing exact same topic, is the fact that

"IT WAS ALWAYS A DEBATE AND WILL ALWAYS BE A DEBATE."

Respect is earned; it cannot be demanded or forced.

Look at Lionel Messi. For years he was heavily criticized by Argentina fans. He was accused of not caring enough, lacking leadership, and failing to reproduce his club form for the national team. He even stepped away from international football after the disappointment of 2016. Yet he never responded by demanding respect. He kept showing up, kept working, and eventually grew into the leader that his teammates followed. His humility, consistency, and leadership—culminating in Copa América titles and the 2022 World Cup—changed the way the team viewed him.

Cristiano Ronaldo's story shows a different side of the same lesson. His achievements are extraordinary but his confrontations with coaches, teammates, and clubs have sometimes overshadowed them. His recent tension with Portugal's coach is another example of how easily a player's legacy can become entangled with questions of ego and authority.

Talent can make people admire you. Achievements can make people applaud you. But humility, character, and the way you treat others are what make people genuinely respect you.

You can demand attention. You can demand authority. But you can never demand genuine respect.

Football aside, Ronaldo was the better player

He is taller, can run faster, jump higher, wrestle better and is a legendary diver.

The only thing he is completely outclassed by Messi is football.

Messi has disproved every narrative around him

There was a time period where you could say Ronaldo was a better player than Messi, around 2018-20. Mainly due to the narratives around Messi.

'Messi is not a clutch player.'

'Messi is not good for Argentina.'

'Messi is not a good captain.'

'Messi is a system player. He can't do well in other environments.'

'Messi is a worse free kick taker than Ronaldo.'

'Messi is terrible at penalties.'

These were all takes you would hear during the Messi vs Ronaldo debate. And these were all said in comparison to Ronaldo. Ronaldo at a time had captained Portugal to international glory, took the winning penalty to win UCLs, scored goals in big matches. Ronaldo was like a Hollywood player.

But Messi in this later stage of his career, has disproved every narrative around him. Overtook Ronaldo's free kick record. He captained Argentina to a WC and two Copas. Taken out of Barcelona, he was still phenomenal for club and country. Converted the penalty in a WC final. Scored in almost every match in the past two WCs.

Simply put any argument you could've used in the Messi v Ronaldo debate is gone. Messi is simply better in almost every aspect of the game.

Refereeing errors that disadvantaged Argentina and Messi in the three finals played between 2014 and 2026.

(If you’re going to argue that a play like this should be interpreted differently, please back it up with reasons.)
2014 World Cup Final: A German player lunges studs-up at Zabaleta; it’s only a yellow card, even though the severity warrants a straight red.
The uncalled penalty by Neuer on Higuaín—a knee to the face that wasn't just denied as a penalty but actually called as an attacking foul (if you don't think it's a penalty, explain why it's an attacking foul).
2015 Copa América: A kick to Messi's stomach results in only a yellow card, despite warranting a red.
2016 Copa América: Marcos Rojo wins the ball cleanly, yet the referee issues a straight red card—there wasn't even any contact.
