I’m an Irish man looking to move to the Netherlands for good. I’ve been over and back to various parts of the Netherlands over the last 10 years. I have fallen in love with the lifestyle, the people, the way of life. The transport system, the bikes, the infrastructure. I just love Dutch life and the Dutch as a people.

I currently live in Ireland. I’m from Ireland originally but I spent most of my formative years in London UK. I came back to Ireland for work. I am bored here. I am not happy with the current climate for housing. The way of life in Ireland isn’t for me. I prefer hustle and bustle, things to do from day to day. Ireland just doesn’t have this. Not where I am anyway.

A little about me. I work in the shipping industry. I strayed ground up sweeping stores and vessels and have progressed over the 14 years in the job into the office planning vessel arrivals, berthing vessels, weighing cargo for customers and depots. Weighing both containers and bulk trucks for delivery all over Ireland. I have tickets for forklift, Volvo front loader, mewps, track machines, scissor lifts you name it. I have 14 years of experience in the industry.

I’m wondering how it goes for gaining employment in Rotterdam port or somewhere else which may suit my skills. I want to start a fresh life over in the Netherlands. I will have over 10000e savings to come with and I’m hoping to have jobs lined up before I arrive.

Ps: I plan on this for July/August 2027. I have been perfecting my cv and researching all I need to have available once I arrive in the Netherlands 🇳🇱. I have all my tickets and accreditations in a folder also.

Anyone who works or knows of the industry in and around Rotterdam port with any knowledge on what I can do to get the ball rolling and improve my chances of picking up work would be of great help.

Een longshot hoor, komtie

Ik ben momenteel aan het bezichtigen in Rotterdam en zag een interessante woning waar ik nog best wat vraagtekens bij heb. Ik dacht: misschien zijn er hier mensen die in deze straat/buurt wonen of er een tijd hebben gewoond en iets kunnen vertellen over hun ervaringen.

Ik ben vooral benieuwd hoe het er in de praktijk is om daar te wonen: sfeer, geluid, veiligheid, drukte en eventuele dingen die je pas merkt als je er woont.

Graag respectvolle reacties, ik ben op zoek naar ervaringen uit de buurt, niet naar nare of discriminerende opmerkingen. :)

In mijn prijsrange zijn er woningen in straten/wijken waar ik nog veel liever zou wonen, maar dit pand is prachtig en het balkon is groot. Dus ik wil niet meteen de straat afschrijven...

En ik doe veel research, woon er nu nog redelijk in de buurt, dus ik fiets er bewust wat vaker langs op verschillende momenten, maar er wonen is toch iets anders.

Hi all, I'm planning to fly in to NL from the UK for a concert at Baroeg on a mid week night, Wednesday to be precise.
Ideally I would hotel at Schiphol and travel back there aftershow to put me at the airport for a early AM flight back to London.
Can anyone let me know how easy the travel is around 11pm - midnight from Baroeg back to AMS?
I could ask Chat GPT etc but nothing beats a bit of local knowledge!

Ik ga binnenkort bezichtigen aan de Wilgenlei in Schiebroek, ongeveer in de omgeving van de Peppelweg. Ik ken dit gedeelte van Rotterdam alleen nog niet, dus ik vroeg me af of hier mensen zijn die daar wonen of de buurt goed kennen en hun ervaringen willen delen.
Hoe is het om daar te wonen? Is het een fijne, veilige en rustige buurt, maar nog wel een beetje gezellig? Hoe is de bereikbaarheid richting het centrum met de fiets en het ov, ook ’s avonds? En zijn er genoeg winkels, supermarkten en andere voorzieningen in de buurt? En is het niet saai wonen voor iemand eind 20?
Ik ben ook benieuwd naar dingen die je pas merkt als je er daadwerkelijk woont: de sfeer, contact met buren, eventuele overlast, plekken die juist wel of niet fijn zijn en algemene voor- en nadelen.

Ik wil mijn eerste aquarium beginnen, vooral gericht op aquascaping. Welke fysieke aquariumwinkels in Rotterdam en omgeving raden jullie aan voor goed advies? En welke kan ik beter vermijden?

Goedemorgen allemaal, ik organiseer sinds 2008 de oudste stadszwemtocht van Europa. Het is een zwemtocht van 3 km in hartje Rotterdam rond het Noordereiland. Wij zwemmen voor twee goede doelen schoon water en gehandicapten.

Nu mag de www.rotterdamswim.com al 5 jaar niet doorgaan van Rotterdam Festivals omdat zij het niet vindt passen binnen het evenementenbeleid van de gemeente Rotterdam.

Wie o wie heeft ideeën hoe wij volgend jaar toch de Rotterdam Swim kunnen laten doorgaan.

I know there is quite some areas that fall under free parking. There was one close to where I lived in Delft. But i am moving to Rotterdam and although I heard of some areas already, I wondered if there is any map where they are visible + maybe rated for safety or so. Has the internet community already created this? Would be handy :)

Ik ga binnenkort verhuizen binnen/naar Rotterdam en loop een beetje vast in de parkeerbureaucratie. Misschien heeft iemand hier ervaring mee.

Ik heb een tijdelijke parkeervergunning vanwege mijn verhuizing aangevraagd. Ik dacht juist dat deze vergunning bedoeld was om de periode te overbruggen waarin je verhuizing nog niet volledig in de gemeentelijke administratie is verwerkt. Mijn verhuizing heb ik al doorgegeven, maar ik sta op dit moment nog niet ingeschreven op mijn nieuwe adres omdat dit blijkbaar nog altijd verwerkt moet worden.

Nu heb ik reactie gekregen op mijn aanvraag voor de tijdelijke parkeervergunning, maar voor zover ik de brief begrijp krijg ik de vergunning niet en ben ik op een wachtlijst geplaatst omdat de parkeersector vol zit.

Daar loop ik dus een beetje op vast: wat moet je in de tussentijd doen?

Ik gebruik mijn auto dagelijks en heb hem ook nodig voor de verhuizing zelf. Moet ik nu serieus het normale parkeertarief betalen om tijdens mijn verhuizing voor mijn eigen nieuwe woning te kunnen parkeren? En daarna iedere dag blijven betalen totdat er ergens een vergunning beschikbaar komt of naar een P+R?

Ik begrijp dat er eventueel een tijdelijke vergunning voor een aangrenzende parkeersector mogelijk is wanneer je eigen sector vol zit. Maar voor mijn gevoel kom ik daarmee weer in dezelfde bureaucratische cirkel terecht, omdat mijn verhuizing/inschrijving nog niet verwerkt is.

Ik probeer inmiddels de gemeente via 14 010 te bereiken, maar sta al ongeveer anderhalf uur in de wachtrij. Uit de brief die ik kreeg werd ik helaas ook niet veel wijzer over wat ik in deze tussenperiode daadwerkelijk met mijn auto moet doen.

Heeft iemand dit recent meegemaakt in Rotterdam?

Wat hebben jullie uiteindelijk gedaan? Kon je toch ergens een tijdelijke vergunning krijgen, bijvoorbeeld voor een aangrenzende sector? En hoe hebben jullie het parkeren geregeld tijdens de verhuizing en in de periode voordat de inschrijving/vergunning rond was?

Alle tips zijn welkom, want ik heb inmiddels het gevoel dat ik tegen een bureaucratische muur aan het praten ben
