MATH 8 WITH BASKAUSKAS

Has anyone here taken Math 8 with him? I’m curious why so few students seem to end up with an A.
Is it because most students don’t put in enough effort, or is there another reason?
I looked at his Rate My Professors reviews, and a lot of people say his exams are very similar to the homework. That makes me wonder why more students don’t get A’s. If you consistently work through the homework and practice problems from the textbook, wouldn’t it be possible to earn a high grade?
For those of you who’ve taken his class, what do you think is the main reason?

Is it possible to transfer from Santa Monica College to a UC in 1–2 years without my parents knowing?

I'm in a really difficult situation and could use some advice.

There's a chance I may get rescinded from UCSD, and I can't let my parents find out. They would probably kick me out and disown me.

My current plan is to attend Santa Monica College and transfer to a UC within 1–2 years. Is that realistic if I work hard, complete my requirements? Has anyone here transferred from SMC to a UC that quickly?

I'm also trying to figure out housing. I'm considering moving my belongings into a storage unit and renting a room near SMC. I've already been stocking up on basic necessities like toothpaste, shampoo and etc so I have some supplies ready. I do have a decent amount of savings around 5000 ish.

For anyone who's been in a similar situation:

  • How did you find affordable housing near SMC?
  • Is renting a room the best option?
  • How much should I budget each month?

Do you have to take competitive GE’s to stand out

I completed my major prep for an economics major planning to transfer to UC but for most of my GE’s I picked really easy classes like music…should I be choosing math ones/ any advanced class instead to stand out?

SMC need people to join club

Hi everyone!

I'm a new student at Santa Monica College, and I'm interested in starting a Career Development & Networking Club this fall.

The goal would be to create a community where students can build professional skills, prepare for internships and jobs, strengthen their resumes and LinkedIn profiles, network with professionals and alumni, and support each other throughout college and the transfer process.

Some ideas include:
• Resume and LinkedIn workshops
• Internship and career advice
• Guest speakers from different industries
• Networking events
• Mock interviews
• Transfer panels
• Professional development workshops

Before I begin the process of officially creating the club, I wanted to see if there's enough interest!

If this sounds like something you'd join—or if you'd be interested in helping start it with me—please leave a comment or send me a DM. I'd also love to hear any ideas for events or activities you'd want to see.

Thanks! 😊

A couch/floor to crash on

Hi there everyone. My name is Alexx and a sophomore at SMC majoring in gender studies. I’m nonbinary and queer. I’m currently in-between places right now (pretty much homeless) and I was wondering if any fellow corsairs would be willing to possibly let me crash on their couch or floor for the weekend? I can help ya get groceries (thanks food stamps) in exchange for letting me crash at your place.

Please feel free to comment or message me with any questions ya may have.

Heading to SMC! Taking Math 7, Psych 1, SOCIOL 1, and Eng 1 ALL ONLINE. Need professor and study tips!

Hey everyone,

I am starting my classes at SMC soon and could really use some guidance. I am taking my entire schedule fully online, and I want to make sure I get good grades.
Here is my online schedule:
Math 7 (Calculus 1)
Psych 1 (General Psychology)
SOCIOL 1 (Introduction to Sociology)
Eng 1 (Reading and Composition 1)

If you have taken these online courses before, please help me out with a few questions:
Online Professors: Who are the best professors for these specific courses online? Who is super organized on Canvas, and who should I avoid?

Study Tips for Each Subject: What is the best way to study and get an A in these specific classes?
How do I survive Math 7 online?
What is the best way to memorize terms for Psych 1 and SOCIOL 1?
How heavy is the reading and writing load for Eng 1 online?

Online Resources: Are the online tutoring centers at SMC actually helpful for calculus and writing essays?
Thanks in advance for any advice. Good luck to everyone else this semester!

My Guide To Math Professors At SMC

I have not personally taken some of these professors so take this with a grain of salt. I also will only be mentioning professors I have heard of. Also, this is coming from the perspective of a graduated STEM student (math major).

Herichi

Herichi is a great professor. He is a tough grader however he takes his lectures seriously and he is a very kind person. I would recommend him as a professor but just be ready to expect a heavier work load.

Lai

Arguably the best math professor at SMC. If you have the option or opportunity to attend her class I cannot stress this enough but sign up for her class.

Nestler

GENUINELY THE WORST PROFESSOR!!!! Do not sign up for his class. Everyone you ask INCLUDING counselors will tell you not to enroll in his class. He has a pass rate of approximately 15%. He will grade your assignments based on his expectations examples VERBATIM and will mark it wrong if he sees the slightest thing wrong. He is not someone worth enrolling with and you will question everything in life. I cannot stress this enough. Avoid him like the plague. Everyday I wonder why he still has a job.

Ouelette

Genuinely a very sweet person. Not the best professor. He cares about his job and his students and he is so kind. In light of this, he is more of a C or B tiered professor.

Soleymani

I don't personally enjoy Soleymani as a professor. He has very boring lectures and he is not very personable. He is also a strict grader. There really isnt much more to say about him.

Wang

I thought Wang was a terrible professor UNTIL I stumbled across Nestler. Despite that fact, he is a decent professor. His lectures are great and he is very interesting to listen to in class. HOWEVER he is an extremely harsh grader and very clearly has favorites. He takes pride in failing his students. He very obviously has favorites and if you take advantage of this fact you might end the class okay.

Askarian

I think he is a kind professor however he expects A LOT from his students. He cares about how his students are doing in the class but regardless will be a harsh grader. Lectures are mandatory but he posts all his lectures and notes so you can always rewatch them. Again, kind but very strict.

I hope this helps future/current SMC STEM students and you learn from the experiences of others. It is so important that you look at the grade distribution ESPECIALLY the withdrawal rates. Most importantly, DO NOT TAKE NESTLER. He is a bitter man and is not worth your time. I would also recommend stopping by the STEM program because there are other students there who are paid to give you advice/tutor on courses and professors. Sometimes it's better to talk to other student mentors than counselors because I have found that they are more honest and direct about some of the professors or classes.

Fall 2026 Award Letter not posted

Hey I am enrolled for Fall 2026 and have been checking my financial aid status on Corsair Connect. Both my FAFSA and verification are showing as complete, but I do not yet have an award letter or disbursement information posted to my account.

I'm wondering if this is the same for anyone else or if anyone knows why it says this.

TAP vs TAG vs Scholars Program

Whats the difference, and what’s worth it?
I’m currently starting my sophomore year, but I’m thinking of staying at SMC for an extra year. I want to transfer preferably to ucla because of distance, but csulb is my second choice! I’ve been a little hesitant about staying an extra year to consider the scholars program. But, I didn’t know that there were many other programs, and I’m a bit confused. If someone could clarify, that would be great! The resources on the SMC website were a little vague, I think.

25 at SMC and confused on career path

Guys idk what the point of this post is really but I’m just now starting college after almost 10 years from dropping out.. basically have no idea what I want to do as a career, I have a strong “business” background but also enjoy management and operations, ultimately I don’t want to waste anymore time in my 20s especially haha. So basically I’m more inclined to get a BM or something similar but have also been slightly interested in the medical field.

On one hand medical offers stability and guaranteed growth in the field and respect from basically everyone .. but it’s very costly and time consuming starting from what I’ve seen or at least the specific ones I’ve looked into

And then “business” seems daunting starting something all over again or having to solely rely on network 24/7.. but the freedom it can offer once running smoothly is unmatched. As well as the overall possible scalability…

so if you’re around my age and just starting school again I’m curious what your major is and how you decided

Late Withdrawal Petition

Has anyone tried to get an F replaced by a W or EW after the semester ended? I’m looking at the forms and it says I would need documented evidence of my circumstance, but I do not own a home or anything, just was a roommate and got kicked out. I don’t have any documents proving this. My grandpa also passed away but he lived in another country and I don’t think they would consider it extraordinary “extenuating” circumstance but who knows. How should I go about proving I had a housing problem? Do you think it would be okay for me to just describe the situation without documentation? My professor is pretty nice but idk if the professor reviews those. I don’t even want to petition for a refund since it will probably be even harder but if anyone has any experience with submitting late w or ew petitions, pls share

SMC is SO beautiful❤️

Student here for one 6-week semester to fill some courses. SMC is so much more beautiful than my original CCC (De Anza). It is arguably more beautiful than like most of UCs😭 I am jealous to you guys! (btw writing course that I took here was also top-notch)
