Questions from a beginner

Some things I need to fix:

  • side indicators to LED
  • chain is loose, do you recommend cutting or just buying a new one? (It’s hitting the exhaust under the chain)
  • there seems to be oil leaking from the front fork, at first I thought it was the breaks - what do you think?

Thanks in advance!

Question for people with failed starter…

I had my bike throw a crazy fit the other morning after i’d washed it a few days prior. it threw a code, (didn’t get to check before it died and went away) held itself at 4000 rpm, wouldn’t start without me cycling the key a bunch, died if i chopped the throttle at low rpm, would sputter if i revved it up and let it return to idle. through all the starting and stopping, at one point it just wouldn’t start at all. the relay would just click. I think that there’s a bigger issue electrically that is causing this and fried the starter in the process, but what are the odds this is derived from the starter having issues and getting water on its connection when i washed it?

Starting issue 2007 sv650

To start, in the last year or so, the starter, battery, spark plugs (yes all 4 with the dual spark), and starter relay has been replaced. It is having these issues intermittently where it will either struggle very hard to start, or not start at all like in the second video. Then other times it will start up just fine.

The previous owner did a clutch safety bypass and the wiring was exposed for a couple of days when i was looking at it. I do plan on restoring the clutch safety switch to stock. Any ideas?

Bike therapy

It was a long week at work.. but a great ride through the mountains. I didn’t even stop to take pics. But I took off most of the commuter accessories and enjoyed the torque through a light weight bike. So fun

starter solenoid or battery?

this morning i went to leave for work and the bike is making this noise. it did this yesterday morning so i took my car but when i got back it started no issue. the only difference was the temperature outside and i have no idea if that would play a role. any help would be greatly appreciated, im going to dive into it more when i get home. it’s an 07 sv650 with 18k miles if that changes anything.

LF Advice on a Project/First Bike

Hey guys, I'm currently looking for my first bike and really like the sv650 from both style, reliability, and availability of parts. I saw a post on Marketplace for a really cheap 2000 sv650 that had some issues and would require a bit of work before being ridable. I haven't worked on bikes before but am pretty confident in my ability to with a book/videos and was wondering if this is something you guys would recommend. I like the idea of learning about the bike and being able to do the work on it myself (even if I found 1 ready to go) so the mechanic side isn't a drawback. I just want to know if this looks like a problem that could be cheap to fix like fuel lines/green connector or if it could potentially be a more expensive problem and wouldn't be worth the hassle on a 26 year old bike.

Washed the bike and now it barely runs

Literally just posted about how much i like this bike and now it’s giving me issues. my sv650 wouldn’t start this morning. it’s fuel pump primed and the dash turned on but when i hit start it wouldn’t, almost like the kick stand sensor or the clutch sensor wasn’t working. i cycled the key a few times and it turned on in neutral with the clutch in. it also started with the stand up in gear and clutch in.

i got a quarter mile down the road and it died on me at a stop light, after feeling a little choppy. i pushed it into the bike lane, and cycled the key a few times and it started again. i had to get on the freeway to get home and in the process it once again felt slight choppy. then it popped an FI light, so i took and exit heading towards my work where my tools were at. while i was cruising city streets it would almost die if i pulled the clutch in, then it started getting stuck at 4000 rpms. i shut it off it didn’t start i cycled the key a few times, and it started again. then it would die as i came up to stoplights and pulled the clutch in. In between each time it doesn’t start, the bike isn’t even turning over, one or two times when the fi light was there it would crank and not start, but every other time it wouldn’t even crank, i would see the dash on and pump would prime and then it wouldn’t even crank.

got to my work and the FI light was gone from starting and stopping the bike, and it wouldn’t come back on. if i chop the throttle at idle it dies sometimes, almost like a poorly running carb bike. i put a paper clip in it to run it on dealer mode, and rode it an hour away (smart i know, but that’s where i have tools and can keep it). during this time it died twice as i was leaving and then worked fine doing 80+ the whole way on the freeway. i got to a gas station by my destination, and it once again wouldn’t start just like in the morning. it almost feels like the ignition switch isn’t working but idk. i cycled the key a bunch and it turned on.

got to my buddy’s house and i started unplugging things and checking for corrosion or bad connections. the starter relay looked horrible like super oxidized, one fuse was loose. i plugged it all back in and tried to start it and now the starter relay just clicks loud and it doesn’t start. so i checked the battery and it was sitting at 12.1 volts which is low. i assume from all the starting and stopping i did trying to diagnose the issue. its on a charger now, im going to pop the tank off and check for vacuum leaks, it has to have fuel because the pump is priming, i dont think the clutch or kick stand sensor are bad because i started it on the kickstand. then that leaves me with a sensor or electrical that i cant really figure out until im inside it. Worth mentioning, is I just washed it, but i was careful to avoid using pressure on any exposed components. it definitely seems like a sensor that saw too much water and or maybe the ignition having some corrosion or water in it. it’s been two days since i washed it though… any guesses?

edit: I charged the battery for three hours with no change (12.1 volts). I bought a new battery and charged it for a little and it read 13 volts, so i threw it in and it didn’t turn over, the relay just clicked. I checked continuity on the starter relay and it was fine i think but im not sure if i did it right. it read like 2 amps when i hit one of the silver prongs and the bolt hole on the other side. I went to jerry rig it with an old battery so i could make it engage as id seen in a video online and thought to myself, is this even worth it this can’t be the issue, and i stopped. the fuse on that relay was fine too. i’m just going to look through the whole fuse box tmrw and try to find something problematic. then i’ll go under the tank and look for stuff. Ive adjusted valves on this bike, ive done wheel changes, spark plugs, air filter, oil, i would not be scared to drop a motor right now, but diagnosing electrical problems is just difficult for me.

Slave leak 03 1000

There is a leak coming from the lower slave cylinder bolt, I can’t tell if it’s oil or brake fluid but my clutch fluid isn’t dropping but I think my oil fluid is. I rebuilt the slave cylinder and am going to do the pushrod seal and while at it throw a new chain kit on. Is there anything I should check before doing any of this to make sure the leak is exactly from the suspected pushrod seal?

2018 SV650X

I’ve owned this beautiful SV650 for a year now. Got it for 3500€ at 35k km. She’s at 50k now and still purrs like new. Starts everytime even in freezing temp, love the Suzuki Easy Start. Just click the starter once and she’s alive.

Keeps up with bigger bikes no problem especially in corners.

Average consumption 6.2L/100km (37mpg) 3.5L at 100kmh, 7L at 200kmh

0-100 3.9s (my PR) which is crazy for a beginner bike imo.

Front brake could be better, kinda jealous of the MT07

For no-wheelie-on-sv police incoming, I can’t hold a wheelie high enough or long enough for it to damage the engine :,)

2013 sv650s problem

Every time I turn the bars even slightly to the right, the bike completely loses power. dash, lights, engine all turn off. happens sometimes when the bars are straight as well. Only way to get it to turn back on is to turn the bars left. I presume it's a loose connection somewhere but can't figure out where. I've read about problems with the green plug so tried to have a look at mine but it's buried deep in the frame under loads of wires. anything else it could be or do i have to dig around to get at the green plug? cheers

Slight clunk when releasing throttle

Is this expected behaviour with sv650? For example with second gear low speed I release throttle and hear a small clunk (almost like when switching from neutral to 1). The bike is new gen 3 and I measured chain has 23mm of free play.

GSXR rear shock on my 2nd Gen

Installed a 2007 GSXR rear shock on my 2004 SV650N. Required a bit of modification but overall cost about $50 CAD. OEM shock lost its seal and I was quite frustrated that it wasn’t serviceable so I figured I’d upgrade. Had to remove and cut out the original tool kit and add threads to the GSXR shock but otherwise it was straightforward.

Really happy with how it feels, feels like a new bike.

I know it needs a wash doing that this weekend.

Starting issues

I’m sorry if this has been answered already before but please bare with me. My 2007 sv650 has been sitting for 8 months while I’ve been away. I tried starting it, it seems like it wanted to start up. It would turn over once or twice then I would get a bunch of clicking sounds. I then jumped it with my truck and it started right up. I let it idle for like 15-20 minutes. Turned it off and then same thing. Won’t start. There is also an FI blinking on the speedometer..
