Lost Tortoise in Sun Valley/NOHO Area

Around 6pm today, we found a tortoise wandering around the area. We took it in our backyard for now and also posted on multiple social medias. We’ve been giving it water and lettuce.

The tortoise seems to be about 15 years old and we think it weighs about 50lbs. If this tortoise looks familiar or you think its yours, please let me know 🙏

(also any tips on how to temporarily take care of a tortoise? this is the first time we’ve ever encountered one 😭)

Air Quality Issues for Saturday Night into Sunday

Hi r/LosAngeles, we are coming up on a period of potentially unhealthy to hazardous air quality due to fireworks.

What is the forecast?

High pressure is slowly building heading into the holiday weekend, which is thinning the marine layer, and leading to a warming trend (temps will be closer to normal for this time of year). The pattern will also keep the area under an inversion that traps pollution by the surface.

Are there any air quality advisories?

There is an air quality alert (officially a Particle Pollution Advisory) issued by the AQMD. It goes into effect at 5PM on Saturday, and will go through at least 3PM Sunday. AQMD is warning of potentially unhealthy to hazardous air quality for much of the region.

The Particle Pollution Advisory issued by AQMD (as of 5:15PM on 7/2)

What is in the smoke?

Fireworks give off large amounts of particulates of varying sizes. Some of the finer particulates (PM2.5) can get deep into your lungs. The particulates will be made of various compounds like paper, plastic, and metals.

The reason we have metals in the air: firework colors. Each color is created by burning metal salts. Some illegal fireworks may even contain lead.

How long is the smoke sticking around?

Smoke and other gases will come out of the atmosphere through deposition (think of ash falling on cars, or rain cleaning the atmosphere), transport/dilution (wind and mixing dissipating the smoke), or through chemical reactions in the atmosphere (which includes reactions with sunlight).

The rate at which this happens depends on the weather and pollutant. Large particles like ash, dust, etc will settle out of the atmosphere faster, and closer to the source. Fine particulates like PM2.5 can remain suspended in the atmosphere for longer periods of time, and can travel farther from the source. Some gases react and can break down quickly, while others may last longer.

How do I protect myself?

Treat this like wildfire smoke.

  • Run air purifiers if you have them. If you don’t there’s a guide from the EPA for a DIY air purifier. Link to Instructions
  • If you have central air: run the fan or A/C to recirculate air through your home and draw it through the filter. You’ll want a good enough filter (MERV 13 or higher if your system can handle it), that means you may need to run out to a home improvement store to buy a better filter.
  • If you have a window A/C or wall mounted A/C: Only run it if you can recirculate the air/close the outside air vent (some have a setting or lever for this). Do not let it pull outside air into the house.
  • Stay inside during the worst air quality, if possible.
  • If you have to go out, wear an N95 (or higher) mask.
  • Check air quality before heading out: AirNow Smoke Map, AQMD Current Air Quality

What would make you actually commit to a weekly circuit training class?

I'm helping run a gym in the Valley and we've recently started a coach-led circuit training class. Our first two classes have had 3 people each, and everyone who's come has had a great experience. We're trying to build it the right way and would love some honest feedback.

A few questions:

  • What would convince you to try a new fitness class for the first time?
  • If you tried it and liked it, what would make you come back every week instead of stopping after one class?
  • What's the biggest reason you've stopped going to group fitness classes in the past?
  • Do you prefer classes that focus more on community, competition, or just getting a great workout?
  • What time of day are you actually willing to commit to consistently?
  • If you've found a class you loved, what made it stand out from every other gym offering?
  • What's one thing you wish more gyms did with their group classes?

I'm not trying to promote the gym, I genuinely want to understand what people are looking for so we can build something people actually enjoy and stick with. Any feedback is appreciated.

Looking for a restaurant for 30 person lunch

Hi everyone. We are looking for such a restaurant for an indoor Friday lunch. Location preferably under 10 miles from Mission Hills area. Anyone have a special place to recommend? Looking for something other than standard banquet locations. Maybe a nicer restaurant with private room/section for parties? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What would make you actually want to show up to a local neighborhood gym event? (SFV / Fithouse 818)

Hey neighbors,

I’m part of the team at Fithouse 818. We are a local gym in the Valley, and we want to host a community/neighborhood event soon.

Instead of just throwing together a basic open house with standard flyers, we want to build something the community actually wants to attend. We want to bring people together, support local businesses, and have some fun.

If you were considering stopping by a weekend neighborhood event, what would make it a "must-attend" for you?

  • Food & Drink: Food trucks? Healthy meal prep vendors? A local coffee pop-up?
  • Activities: A friendly fitness challenge (with actual prizes), a free outdoor mobility/stretch clinic, or just a casual social mixer?
  • Local Perks: Pop-ups from other independent SFV businesses or artists?

We really want to keep this community-focused and give back to the 818 area. Drop your thoughts, complaints about standard gym events, or ideas below!

Donation of travel sized beauty items

Does anyone know where in the SFV I can donate unused travel sized beauty/hygiene items????? I have a lot that were GWP from Ulta/sephora/macys. I got them all very recently so they should not be expired.

PLEASE HELP

COMMUNITY HELP NEEDED – HIT & RUN PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT – 2nd St & Hubbard St

Please share.

This evening at approximately 6:15 PM, my mother-in-law was struck by a vehicle while legally crossing in the crosswalk at the corner of 2nd Street and Hubbard Street, walking from the Harvest Moon neighborhood side toward the 7-Eleven. My sister-in-law was with her and witnessed the incident.

The vehicle is believed to be a red four-door sedan, possibly a Toyota Corolla or Honda, with faded paint on the front. The driver was making what appeared to be a left turn from 2nd Street onto Hubbard Street when they struck her and then continued driving northbound on 2nd Street toward the neighborhood above Carlsbad Street and Beaver Street without stopping.

🚨 We are asking for help from anyone who:

Lives along 2nd Street, Hubbard Street, Carlsbad Street, Beaver Street, Herron Street, or nearby streets.

Has Ring, Nest, Arlo, or other security cameras that may have captured a red sedan traveling through the area around 6:10–6:20 PM.

Was driving through the intersection or happened to witness the accident.
Has dashcam footage or any information that may help identify the vehicle.

Even the smallest detail could make a difference.

Please send me a private message or contact the police if you have any information. Thank you so much for helping us locate the driver and bring some accountability for what happened.

Location: Intersection of 2nd Street & Hubbard Street, near 7-Eleven
Time: Approximately 6:15 PM
Suspect Vehicle: Red 4-door sedan (possibly Toyota Corolla or Honda) with faded paint on the front
Direction of Travel After Impact: Continued on 2nd Street toward the Carlsbad/Beaver Street area

🙏 Please share with neighbors and local community groups.
