What would your ideal Android TV home screen actually do?

I’m building a remote-first Android TV launcher for people who bounce between Plex/Jellyfin/Emby and streaming apps. The pain I’m trying to solve is: "I don’t want to remember where I was watching something, what service it’s on, or which app I need to open."

For Shield users: what’s the most annoying part of your current TV workflow? Is it discovery, watchlists, continuing shows, Plex vs streaming apps, launcher clutter, or something else?

I’m looking for feedback first, and if there's interest, I'd be happy to offer early access when it's ready.

Multiple hard drives & USB hubs (Shield Pro 2019)

When I got my Shield (model in title) I slapped a low capacity SSD in to the main USB slot & left the second slot available for a games controller as I had Retroarch in the back of my mind (I know you can do wireless but I always prefer wired connections wherever possible).

I don't know the terminology but the hard drive was formatted/attached in such a way that the Shield saw it as its own capacity if you get me? As in I couldn't just disconnect it & attach to a PC. I could access it from a PC over my network but that was it.

FFWD some time & it was becoming a pain putting a handful of movies on there for Plex, removing them to free up space & add more new ones. So what I did was buy a mains powered USB hub & attach a new, larger SSD. FFWD some more time & I switched that SSD out for a large HDD.

What I'm thinking of doing is totally starting from scratch but I'm wondering what order I should do it in.

What I'm thinking of doing is removing the low capacity SSD & replacing it with the large SSD. Having all the system files, apps etc on that & the HDD purely for movies for Plex, nothing else.

Should I....

  1. Disconnect everything. Erase the Shield. Attach the large SSD, set up as part of the Shield's storage & THEN attach the HDD.

  2. Disconnect everything. Erase the Shield. Attach the large SSD & the HDD at the exact same time to the USB hub ... and I guess hope the Shield uses the SSD as its own storage & configs the HDD as being able to be removed (and attached to a PC directly)?

I'm sure there's better ways of doing things.......like NASs, but I'm dealing with this SSD & this HDD for now so I hope while it may not be 'the way', the question at least makes sense?

Hey everyone.

Wanted to put together a solid overview of the app in one place since a lot of people ask about specific features and it is not always obvious where to find them. I also want to make sure people know this app runs properly on Android TV, Amazon FireOS, and Fire Stick devices, because that tends to get overlooked. More on that below.

Android TV, Amazon FireOS and Fire Stick
This is worth calling out properly because it is something UFM Pro does that most file managers simply do not. The TV version is not a phone app stretched to fit a big screen. It has been built specifically for TV environments with full D-pad navigation throughout. Every screen, every menu, every interaction is designed to be used with a remote control. No touch required, no awkward zoomed in phone UI, no broken focus states.

Install via the Downloader app using code: 1581139 for Amazon Devices, I am in the process to have it on the official Amazon Store.

If you have ever installed a file manager on your Fire Stick or Android TV box and ended up with a cramped phone layout that barely works with a remote, UFM Pro is a completely different experience.

Menus are laid out for 10 foot viewing distances, navigation flows naturally with the D-pad, and nothing requires you to dig through a UI that was never meant for a remote control.

TV specific features include dedicated pairing screens for device to device connections, separate auth flows for Google Drive and OneDrive that work without a phone style browser, Shizuku support for TV, and custom cache limit settings suited to TV hardware.

The file server also works great on TV, meaning you can run an FTP or SFTP server from your Fire Stick and pull files from it on your PC over your local network.

File browsing and navigation
The main file browser supports dual pane mode through TwinWindow, which opens two folders side by side. Useful for moving files between locations without copying and then navigating separately. Available on both phone and TV.

Storage analysis
The storage analyzer gives you a breakdown of where your space is going. It finds large files, duplicates, junk, old files, and shows folder sizes. The duplicate finder works well, just go through the safety confirmation before bulk deleting anything as it is there to flag files that could be riskier to remove.

Encrypted vault
The vault uses AES-256 encryption. Pick a folder, set it up, and from then on those files are only accessible through the vault browser inside the app. There is no credential recovery by design so keep your details somewhere safe.

Network shares and cloud storage
Local network shares over SMB, FTP, and SFTP are all supported. For cloud you can connect Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, WebDAV, and S3 compatible storage. The S3 setup lets you point the app at any S3 compatible endpoint, not just AWS. TV users get dedicated auth flows for Google Drive and OneDrive that do not require a standard browser.

Built in file server
You can run an FTP or SFTP server directly from your device, including from a Fire Stick or Android TV box. Start it from the server host screen, connect from your PC with any FTP client, and it stays running as a foreground service even when the screen is off. No cables needed.

Sync
Sync profiles let you keep two locations in sync on a schedule. Works across local storage and network locations, so keeping a folder mirrored to a NAS is straightforward. The scheduler runs it in the background without any manual input.

Media viewers
Images, video, audio, PDFs, text files, and ZIP and 7ZIP archives all open natively. There is an enhanced media player with a custom interface for video and audio. APNG animated images are supported too.

App management
Browse installed apps and install APK, XAPK, and APKS files through the built in package installer. The storage analyzer also includes debloat suggestions for identifying apps you may not need.

Shizuku support
Shizuku gives the app broader file access without full root. Works on both mobile and TV with separate setup screens for each. Once running, the app can reach parts of the filesystem that are otherwise restricted.

Remote management
Pair devices over WiFi for remote file management. ADB pairing is also supported. Once paired you get a full remote file interface over your local network. TV has its own dedicated pairing screen.

Search and indexing
Search runs off a background file index. Configure what gets indexed in settings under storage indexer. Once built, search is fast and supports filters. If results seem incomplete, check the index detail screen to see if indexing is still in progress.

Home screen widget
A bookmark widget lets you jump straight to your most used folders from the home screen. Set up your favorites in settings and they appear there automatically.

Bluetooth remote, your phone as a TV remote
This one surprises people. UFM Pro can turn your phone into a Bluetooth remote for your Android TV or Fire Stick, and it works across the entire TV, not just inside the app. Once connected, you can navigate the TV interface, control volume, and handle power from your phone. It is a proper system level remote, so you can use it in Netflix, YouTube, your TV launcher, wherever.

This is not a companion app gimmick. If you have ever lost your Fire Stick remote down the back of the couch you will immediately understand why having this built into a file manager app you already have installed is genuinely useful. Open UFM Pro on your phone, connect over Bluetooth, and you are controlling your TV.

🔗 Download: Google Play Store

If you have questions or something is not working as expected, post with as much detail as you can about your device, OS version, and what you were doing. The more context the easier it is to help.

The tip jar is in the supporter loyalty screen if you want to support development. Thanks for being here.

Thank You and Kind Regards

Stuck at 10mbps even with wired Cat8 cable...

EDIT: SIMPLY A BAD CABLE. NEW CABLE SOLVED THE ISSUE. 1000Mbps now!

I'm struggling with getting my Shield setup. Currently I have it hardwired with this Cat8 cable:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FXY7V8Q?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

My setup is as follows: Tmobile 5G gateway --> TP-Link Deco M9 plus --> TP-Link TL-SG105 switch --> Shield via 30ft Monoprice Cat8 Ethernet Cable

What am I doing wrong?

Returned Shield Pro after 1 day. Was it a dud?

Bought a new Shield TV Pro thinking it would be the best option for streaming Steam off my PC and also replacing my old apple TV. I returned it after having random Shield remote dropouts and freezing after trying to download apps on google play and then starting a seemingly endless loop of rebooting itself. It was fully updated. I figured it was a faulty unit that was repacked as the control came with batteries already installed but reading some threads in here makes me think these issues are just the situation with the unit now as its unsupported. I know its old tech but it still seems to have the best specs for streaming steam. Should I try and get my money back?

Help to remove/disable

Hey! Every time I wake my Shield this setting auto enables and I have to disable it manually. I dont know what the setting is but I think it arrived there when I tried to set up Better Xcloud and had to do something with ADB manager called ADB TV.

When enabled, it reads up every word in the YouTube app. No other app only YouTube. I also have some weird stuff happening inside the YouTube app where it randomly pauses/plays the video im watching.

Is a factory reset the only fix? Can't even remember what I did inside the ADB TV app just followed a guide for the controller to work inside XCloud.

Nvidia Shield TV 2019 dead

I have 2 Nvidia Shield TV media players that have worked flawlessly for a few years...I went to our Bonus room yesterday and went to watch a movie and the Shield would not come on at all... I tried different AC plugs and still nothing... I actually took the power plug from my 2nd unit wich is working fine and the box does not come on... so I know the plug works, I know the remote works still getting lights and I tried a resync... still nothing..... I have tried it on 2 different TVS as well... No lights at all...

The is just DEAD....any ideas other than spend another $200 for a new one...Is there no one that works on these?

I'm in the Nashville area

Rip Shield TV

Well the time has come for me to say goodbye to my Shield TV Pro who went under a flood of water last week. The power supply is safe though it was high enough, i doubt it is going to work, awaiting insurance first…

GlanceAI Invasive Install

I randomly got a full screen pop up asking me to opt into the GlanceAI agreement. It looked very suspicious and some quick lookups showed this as some invasive malware. I declined the opt in and then found and followed this (Method 1 , the others were dead ends). I've never seen anything so malicious in my life. Worst part, is if anyone else in the household came across the pop up it would have been a very accept and move on scenario.

https://support.google.com/androidtv/thread/440469619/how-to-get-rid-of-the-glance-ai-screensaver-from-android-tv?hl=en

copy/pasted all the info below in case source link breaks.

Method 1: Change the Screensaver App

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Device Preferences
  3. Select Screen saver or Ambient mode
  4. Choose another screensaver such as:
    • Backdrop
    • Colors
    • Clock
    • Google Photos
  5. Exit settings and restart the TV

This often removes the Glance overlay completely.

Method 2: Disable the Glance App

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Open Apps
  3. Select See all apps
  4. Look for:
    • Glance
    • Glance AI
    • Glance for TV
    • AI Screensaver
  5. Open it and choose:
    • Disable
    • or Uninstall updates
    • or Force stop

If “Disable” is greyed out:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Special app access
  2. Check if Glance has permissions like:
    • Display over other apps
    • System settings access
  3. Turn those off.

Method 3: Clear Glance Data

If the popup keeps returning:

  1. Settings
  2. Apps
  3. Glance AI
  4. Storage & cache
  5. Clear storage
  6. Clear cache
  7. Restart TV

Method 4: Disable Auto Updates

Some TVs reinstall the screensaver through updates.

  1. Open Google Play Store
  2. Settings
  3. Auto update apps
  4. Select Don’t auto update apps

Method 5: Use ADB to Remove It (Advanced)

If Sony or a carrier bundled Glance as a system app, you can remove it through ADB from a computer without rooting the TV.

You would:

  • Enable Developer Options
  • Enable USB debugging
  • Use ADB commands to uninstall the package for the current user

Typical package names may look like:

adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.glance.tv

But the exact package name must first be identified.

NVIDIA Shield Tv Pro 4k + IPTV

I am very new to the world of online streaming and knowing which devices are recommended for whichever service you desire.

I am looking to buy the Shield TV Pro 4k and allegedly, download an IPTV to get Sports, Movies & all the rest of it.

If theres any advanced users on here i would appreciate some pointers on if the Shield is suitable for IPTV and if so, which IPTV service do you use? Again, just for educational purposes.

Thanks in advance

How good is the shield tv pro in 2026?

I’m moving into a new apartment and planning on getting the sceptre tv without any built in ad riddled crap. How is the shield tv pro working out now? It’s almost 8 years old and I was wondering if it’s still worth $200 in 2026. I don’t want anything that’s full of ads I just want to be able to stream plex and Disney plus in 4k. I’d like to use my living room PCs but unfortunately most streaming services limit the resolution to 480/720 when streaming from a pc.

Shield Pro 2019 no picture after couple of days

Hello,

I'm an owner of Shield TV Pro 2019 since 2020, last 1 year my Shield was hooked up to my LG OLED via Marantz Cinema 60 receiver using certified HDMI 2.1 48 Gbps cables and all was working fine. Couple of months back (after the 9.2.4 FW update) I've had an issue where Shield has stopped to show any picture - the screen was black. I played around with the connections, changed cables, HDMI inputs on the receiver and it seemed to me that the fault was in the cable. Last week I ran in the same issue, this time around it resolves after unplugging and re-plugging for 1-2 days, after that another black screen. I've tried to connect it to a 4k non HDR monitor, same story - sometimes it works as nothing has happened, another time no picture. I did factory reset, cleaning and re-pasting, nothing helped. Did anyone experience similar issue? Any other idea what could I try to fix the issue? Or is it just bad luck...

It seems that it is quite difficult to buy a new Shield in my country right now (Europe/Slovakia), so I went with Apple TV 4k 128 GB for the time being, managed to grab it for 180 Euros, before the price hike.

BTW, I also did RMA the "faulty" HDMI cable at my local store couple of weeks back (the one from the couple of months back) and they told me there was nothing wrong with it, but they replaced it anyway. It seems that it wasn't the cable after all.

Echos....

EDIT: I decided to let ChatGpt rephrase my post to fit the theme of it.

2015 Shield owner here.

Eleven years ago nobody imagined this timeline would end up looking like... this.

For years this sub begged for a real Shield Gen 2—not the recycled 2017/2019 refreshes. Every time I said NVIDIA would never build a true successor, I got buried in downvotes.

Now it's June 28, 2026.

AI is vacuuming up silicon, memory, and engineering talent. Everyone keeps waiting for prices to "go back to normal."

Normal has been permanently discontinued.

Keep telling yourselves GPUs, RAM, SSDs, and phones will get cheap again. Hope is free. Hardware isn't.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe next year 16GB RAM is dirt cheap again.

Or maybe in five years you're paying premium prices for yesterday's hardware while renting your computer from the cloud because ownership became a luxury.

Either way, you'll remember posts like this.

Optimism is renewable. Inventory isn't.

Double-clicking home and closing an app does not force it.

Over and over I see posts saying Double-clicking home will let you force-close background apps. This does not force them; it only removes them from the last-used list.

you can either go to Settings - Apps - App name - and click "force close."

or install an App killer like the TDUK App killer in the play store or sideload the Background Apps & Process List and use it to kill them.

I use the Tduk app killer; it kills all background apps with one click. and it has a whitelist. I add Projectivy to the whitelist, as that is my default launcher

Another user affected by 2017 waking up on its own

Many topics on this already, but I'm curious if there's any new knowledge on a SHIELD 2017 device that mysteriously started waking its self (and CEC-connected TV) again.

I've experienced this problem before, and last time disabled user apps from waking the device which seemed to work for awhile. Currently, the wake reason is the dreaded Android system (1000). The Samsung TV is not internet connected so couldn't have been a firmware update. I haven't updated the shield's firmware recently either. Possibly a system app update? I've unplugged the device several times, but after watching media in the evening, it will return to this pattern of waking its self up. I'd prefer to keep CEC power on enabled if possible.

Any theories or advice?

No Prime Day discount this year apparently

I've been holding off buying a second Shield Pro for about a month now because I was waiting for a discount but apparently that isn't happening this year.

Not a huge deal but I wish I had just bought the thing a month ago haha.
