HSBC Live+ application journey

Thought I'd share my friend's HSBC Live+ application journey for everyone's knowledge, share yours

Timeline: Applied on 4 July → Card delivered on 10 July (6 days)

A few things worth knowing:

  • No prior relationship with HSBC.
  • Approved with 1 salary slip and 2 salary credits in the bank statement.
  • Aadhaar address was in a non-serviceable location, but my communication address was serviceable.
  • No physical verification at home or office.
  • Received rejection emails initially, submitted additional documents after contacting HSBC, and got approved the very next day.
  • Had 3 recent CIBIL enquiries (CIBIL: 778) and was still approved.
  • Got a surprisingly high **₹**5 lakh credit limit.

Tips:

  • Keep your physical PAN card ready for VKYC.
  • If VKYC quality issues occur on a laptop, try using your phone/tablet's rear camera.
  • Don't panic if you receive the generic "rejected due to internal policy" email...it seems to happen to many NTB applicants. Follow up with HSBC if needed.

Overall, the process wasn't as straightforward as other banks, but it worked out in the end. Hope this helps anyone planning to apply for the HSBC Live+ card.

If you are planning to apply, do it from here

Flipkart Bike Purchase for Max. Reward

I want to purchase bike worth 1.5 Lakhs from flipkart. I've flipkart axis bank credit card but it has capping of 4000 rupee cashback. So, I was thinking to do part payment via Flipkart axis bank credit card and partly via gift cards.

So, I want to know best ways to add gift card so that I can utilise my cards in best way for rewards and milestone achievements too.

I've following Cards, HDFC Moneyback+, Swiggy, BOB Easy and Select, SBI Simply Click and BPCL, RBL Paisa on demand, ICICI Coral, Amazon pay, AXIS Neo, Flipkart Axis Bank. All cards have good limits. Limit is of no concern here.

I tried HDFC Moneyback+ trine on smartbuy, it levied a 2.5% processing fee+ GST.

Also, if anyone did trxn on smartbuy via Swiggy card, did it got 5% cashback or base 1% cashback?

PS: I'm gifting this bike to my self on my birthday which is on upcoming Tuesday.

The Biggest Credit Card Mistake? Chasing the Annual Fee Waiver.

One of the biggest mistakes I see credit card users make is spending just to get the annual fee waived.

"I need another ₹30,000 before my card anniversary."
"I'll buy some gift vouchers."
"I'll prepay a few bills."
"I don't really need it, but it'll save me the annual fee."

Sounds logical... until you do the math.

Let's say your card has a ₹999 annual fee and requires ₹2 lakh annual spend for a waiver.

If you end up spending ₹20,000 on things you wouldn't have bought otherwise, did you really "save" ₹999?

No ! you spent ₹20,000 to avoid paying ₹999.

A better way to think about it is this:

  • Use the card where it genuinely gives the best rewards.
  • Let the fee waiver happen naturally.
  • If it doesn't, compare the actual value you received (cashback, rewards, lounge access, offers, etc.) against the annual fee.

Sometimes paying a ₹999 fee for ₹8,000 worth of benefits is a far better deal than forcing unnecessary spending just to get the fee waived.

A waived fee is a bonus, not a goal. The real goal is maximizing net value.

Have you ever found yourself making an unnecessary purchase just to hit an annual fee waiver milestone? Looking back, do you think it was worth it?

Remember, banks earn more when we spend more—not necessarily when we spend smarter.

Rate my credit card setup — what would you change?

Currently I have these cards:

\\- HDFC Pixel Play Visa And Rupay — ₹2L limit — LTF

\\- Amazon Pay ICICI Visa — ₹2L limit — LTF

\\- Axis My Zone Visa — ₹92K limit — LTF

\\- City Union Bank DHI RuPay — ₹50K limit — LTF

\\- SBI Cashback — ₹50K limit — ₹999 + GST

\\- Axis Flipkart — ₹92K limit — ₹499 + GST

I mainly use them for online shopping, cashback, UPI and general and grocery expenses.

How would you rate this setup out of 10?

Also, which card would you add/remove/replace to make the setup better? Open to suggestions, especially for a good LTF card that fills a gap in my current setup.

Axis Cashback Vs SBI Cashback

Feature Axis Cashback SBI Cashback
Annual Fee ₹1,000 + GST ₹999 + GST
Fee Waiver ₹4 lakh annual spend ₹2 lakh annual spend
Online Cashback 2%–7% (tiered based on monthly online spend - Refer my explanation below) Flat 5%
Offline Cashback 0.75% 1%
Monthly Cashback Cap Up to ₹4,000 on online cashback + unlimited 0.75% offline ₹2,000 on online + ₹2,000 on offline (after 2026 revision)
Welcome Benefit ₹1,000 worth of EDGE Reward Points None
Cashback Credit Cashback statement credit Cashback statement credit
Fuel Surcharge Waiver No special advantage Yes (up to ₹100/statement)

Tiered cashback explanation:

The Axis Cashback Card does not give 7% on your entire spending once you cross ₹40,000. That's the biggest misconception.

Instead, it works like income tax slabs: different portions of your spend earn different cashback rates.

Here's how it works:

Monthly Eligible Online Spend Cashback
First ₹5,000 2%
Next ₹35,000 (₹5,001–₹40,000) 5%
Above ₹40,000 7%

Example 1: ₹3,000 online spend

  • ₹3,000 × 2% = ₹60 cashback

Total cashback = ₹60

Example 2: ₹10,000 online spend

  • First ₹5,000 × 2% = ₹100
  • Remaining ₹5,000 × 5% = ₹250

Total cashback = ₹350

Effective cashback = 3.5%

Example 3: ₹25,000 online spend

  • First ₹5,000 × 2% = ₹100
  • Remaining ₹20,000 × 5% = ₹1,000

Total cashback = ₹1,100

Effective cashback = 4.4%

Example 4: ₹40,000 online spend

  • First ₹5,000 × 2% = ₹100
  • Next ₹35,000 × 5% = ₹1,750

Total cashback = ₹1,850

Effective cashback = 4.625%

Example 5: ₹50,000 online spend

  • First ₹5,000 × 2% = ₹100
  • Next ₹35,000 × 5% = ₹1,750
  • Remaining ₹10,000 × 7% = ₹700

Total cashback = ₹2,550

Effective cashback = 5.1%

Example 6: ₹70,000 online spend

  • First ₹5,000 × 2% = ₹100
  • Next ₹35,000 × 5% = ₹1,750
  • Remaining ₹30,000 × 7% = ₹2,100

Total cashback = ₹3,950

Effective cashback = 5.64%

Maximum cashback

The accelerated online cashback is capped at ₹4,000 per statement cycle:

  • ₹100 maximum from the 2% slab
  • ₹1,750 maximum from the 5% slab
  • ₹2,150 maximum from the 7% slab

So the maximum online cashback is ₹4,000 per statement cycle.

Comparison with SBI Cashback

Monthly Online Spend Axis Cashback SBI Cashback (5%)
₹10,000 ₹350 ₹500
₹25,000 ₹1,100 ₹1,250
₹40,000 ₹1,850 ₹2,000
₹50,000 ₹2,550 ₹2,000 (subject to the statement cap)
₹70,000 ₹3,950 ₹2,000 (subject to the statement cap)

Key takeaway: For online spends below ₹40,000/month, SBI Cashback generally earns more because it pays a flat 5% on eligible transactions. The Axis Cashback Card starts to pull ahead only when your eligible online spending exceeds ₹40,000 per statement cycle, this should help you decide between the two...

Confused between HSBC Live+, HSBC RuPay Cashback & HSBC RuPay Platinum?

Confused between HSBC Live+, HSBC RuPay Cashback & HSBC RuPay Platinum? Here's a simple comparison.

Feature HSBC Live+ HSBC RuPay Cashback HSBC RuPay Platinum
Joining/Annual Fee ₹999 + GST ₹499 + GST Lifetime Free
Fee Waiver ₹2L annual spends ₹2L annual spends Not applicable
Dining, Grocery & Food Delivery 10% cashback (up to ₹1,200/month) 10% cashback (up to ₹400/month combined limit along with UPI) Reward Points

UPI on Credit Card No Yes Yes
Airport Lounge 4 Domestic/year 8 Domestic + 2 International/year No lounge access
Best For Cashback maximizers UPI + cashback users LTF seekers

HSBC Live+

✔ My pick if your goal is to maximise cashback.
✔ 10% cashback on dining, groceries & food delivery.
✔ 1.5% cashback on most other eligible spends.
✔ Higher monthly cashback cap than the RuPay Cashback card.
✔ Makes the most sense if your monthly spends are around ₹12,000 or more.

Best for: People who mainly use their credit card for day-to-day spending and want the highest cashback.

HSBC RuPay Cashback

✔ Lower annual fee.
✔ Supports UPI payments through RuPay.
✔ 10% cashback on dining, groceries & food delivery (₹400 monthly cap).
✔ 1% cashback on other eligible spends.( max is Rs 400 combined limit)
✔ 8 domestic + 2 international lounge visits every year.

Best for: People who regularly make UPI payments and want cashback without paying a higher annual fee.

HSBC RuPay Platinum

✔ Lifetime Free.
✔ Earn reward points instead of cashback.
✔ Supports UPI payments.
✔ A good option if you just want a no-fee backup card.

Best for: Beginners or anyone looking for a Lifetime Free card mainly for bank offers.

My Take

Go with HSBC Live+ if:
• Your monthly spends are around ₹12,000 or more.
• Dining, groceries and food delivery make up a big part of your expenses.
• Your priority is getting the highest possible cashback.
• You don't really need RuPay UPI.

Go with HSBC RuPay Cashback if:
• You spend around ₹4,000 a month.
• You make a lot of UPI payments.
• You want a lower annual fee.
• Lounge access is an added benefit for you.

Go with HSBC RuPay Platinum if:
• You only want a Lifetime Free card.
• You'll mostly use it for bank offers.
• You're okay earning reward points instead of cashback.

If you could keep only ONE of these three cards, which one would you choose and why?
