I drew this beautiful girl. Her name was Athena.
Pastel Pencils on PastelMat.
I just wanted to share this bc I will be gifting it to someone.
Athena was a beautiful soul who I had the privilege of caring for during her last few years of life.
Very long story short, her original family loved her for twenty years & she had to be re-homed after a devastating loss. About ten years later, she eventually ended up with me. I was given her original family’s contact info & began to send them updates/pics whenever possible... they would send her care packages with food/treats/toys.
She was doing very well until one morning she wasn’t. I rushed her to an emergency vet only to find out she was in acute renal failure. I was able to spend a few more hours with her while they ran tests & during that time I felt it necessary to let her family know what was happening.
Losing her suddenly was extremely painful, but her family was so appreciative of the love that she was surrounded with.
I’ve kept in touch with them over the past year, they’re wonderful people.
Even though I put off drawing her portrait for a while bc it still hurts to look at her photos, I knew I wanted to gift her family with something special since they still cared so much for her after all these years.
stupidest question you will read
i took a 6 week pastel class for beginners with 0 background in drawing, painting or anything artistic, i love the medium but my paintings would always suck because my drawings would suck.
my question is: do i need to go back literally to the drawing board and focus on drawing first before attempting pastels again ?
Loving the soft pastels
I followed some soft pastel tutorials and artist techniques and I love them!
Field of Dreams
I had so much fun painting this scene on homemade pastel paper!
I brush on a layer of clear gesso, let it dry, lightly sand with 400 grit sandpaper, and repeat. That gives me a really nice textured paper to work on, and sanding knocks down an high points that might catch on the sticks as I paint.
I find I have to use softer pastels than what I normally do on UArt 400, but light layering and blending allows me to get a lot of layers down. As the tooth fills up, I use my softest sticks to make my finishing marks and details.
Tip: brush the gesso on in the right direction! You’ll have brushstrokes to content with, so really think about if you want them to be horizontal, vertical, random, or even intentionally different where objects are like big flowers, trees, or water.
The full video lesson will be on my Patreon channel in September.
THE CHANT
Fiest ever soft pastel attempt
Please don't judge too harshly. I'm fascinated by the magic of pastel and just starting out.

A Tale of 2 Papers
Hi all. First time post here.
Just wanted to share my experience with two different sanded papers from Amazon. My wife and I both work in pastels and have been for about 12 years, coming from about 50 years of doing oils and watercolors.
We usually work on Pastel Premier or UArt sanded papers but have been away from our studio for over a month and needed some paper so we tried MAIMOUFIN and Fuyoooo. Some weird sounding and spelled "brands" on Amazon for sure.

https://www.amazon.com/Fuyoooo-Sanded-Artists-Painting-Neutral/dp/B0GF17LJ6N
I was expecting the Maimoufin to be the better of the two, but the grit was too coarse for us, plus the sheets were not actually 9x12, but about 9 1/2 by 11 7/8ths. No go for us. I did sand down the grit with some 180 grit sandpaper and ended up with a really nice texture, but that was a hassle.
The one that I didn't think was going to be worth much, the Fuyoooo, ended up being some of the nicest paper we have used and it is very inexpensive at $1.67 to as low as $1.51 per 9x12 sheet! Very heavy stock, doesn't curl up like UArt and holds up well to water, alcohol and OMS. Just keep the liquids away from the cut edges. Alcohol for us was the hands down winner. No buckling or separating of the suface even when left wet for several minutes. It does have a sort of linen pattern on it, unlike the UArt and Pastel Premier but it fills in fast if you want to hide it and looks pretty nice with contrasting color passages giving it an almost fine linen look.
The multi tones are nice but we will probably stick with black and white as we like to choose our own tones using pastels and alcohol on white, using the black for when you want a very dark ground to show through. It stays nice and flat the entire time from alcohol / pastel washes to block in the darks and mid tones, with just some artists tape holding it to a board. I was able to remove a passage of at least 6 layers with a pice of pipe insulation foam and start over with almost as much grit as the untouched paper.
I would suggest going straight to the Fuyoooo unless you like super coarse papers. The Fuyoooo is about 500 grit.
Here is a little test sketch done on a 2" wide strip of the black Fuyoooo.
