LGBT-friendly knitting groups around Staunton?

Looking to make positive connections in my town and I like knitting around friendly/accepting people. If anyone has a lead on an LGBTQ friendly knitting group, it sounds like my cup of tea.

Sewing classes in Staunton?

I just got a sewing machine from a friend and I’m really excited to learn how to use it! I know there are lots of online resources, but I’d really prefer an in-person class.

Does anyone know of any sewing classes or someone who teaches beginners in the Staunton area?

Repair Cafés, Linux Workshops, a local Time Bank, Meshtastic, farmland access: some updates from QCRS

Hey folks I figured I'd put the actual details here rather than make everyone click through an Eventbrite link to figure out what this is. 😄

The Queen City Resiliency Salon has had a bunch of small community projects moving forward lately, and we're getting together Wednesday, August 26 at 6 PM at the Staunton Public Library to share where things stand and figure out what's next.

5:45–6:00 PM: Room Setup & Arrival

Come early, say hello, and help us get settled.

6:00–6:30 PM: Why This Matters: A Quick Economic & Resilience Update

A short look at the bigger picture: what's happening economically, why building local resilience matters, and how the work we're doing together fits into it.

6:30–7:00 PM: QCRS Project Team Updates

Updates from our four project teams, including what we've accomplished, what's currently underway, and what's coming next.

7:00–7:15 PM: Where We Need You

Specific requests for help, opportunities to volunteer, and leadership roles for people who would like to take greater ownership of QCRS projects and activities.

7:15–7:30 PM: Questions & Break

Ask questions, grab a drink, stretch your legs, and catch up with neighbors.

7:00–8:30 PM: Salon & Idea Boards: Mix, Mingle, and Dream Up What's Next!

We're bringing the Idea Boards back!

We'll revisit earlier ideas, see how far we've come, identify what's still worth pursuing, and brainstorm our next steps together.

No special expertise is required. Bring your ideas, questions, skills, curiosity, and willingness to help.

You can register for this free gathering here.

Do people know that the left lane is for passing?

Never in my life have I seen so many people just sitting in the passing lane going the same speed OR SLOWER than the cars in the travel lane. If you’re driving on the interstate, the left lane is meant to be used ONLY if you are passing another car in the right lane. If you are not currently or about to pass another car, STAY IN THE RIGHT. Special shoutout to the mountain drive going to and from Cville, which is especially cancerous in this regard.

Like, do driver’s ed courses in this area not teach this or what?

Auditions for ENDGAME

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Transports of Joy Announces Auditions for Beckett's Endgame

New Harrisonburg theater company seeks two actors for its debut production, staged with
Eastern Mennonite University this October
HARRISONBURG, V A — August 16, 2026 — Transports of Joy, a new Harrisonburg-based
theater company, will hold auditions on August 26 and 28 at Eastern Mennonite University for
two roles in Samuel Beckett's Endgame, opening October 22 at EMU’s MainStage Theater. The
production runs October 22–24.
The company is casting the roles of Nagg and Nell — Hamm's legless, disintegrating parents,
who spend the play confined to a pair of ashbins. Tom King has been cast as Hamm and Jay Zehr
as Clov; Transports of Joy is now seeking actors to complete the ensemble. Those interested in
auditioning for Nagg or Nell can contact Auditions@transportsofjoy.com for sides and
scheduling.

About the roles
Actors should be able to suggest age and physical frailty through voice and face alone. The
company is looking for a strong sense of comic timing paired with genuine emotional depth.

About the Play
Endgame imagines what might be the last living beings on earth, sheltering together at the end of
everything and coping through routine and storytelling. Its characters are also performers playing
out their tensions before a live audience — an acknowledgment that theater itself is a kind of
shelter, a communion between stage and audience facing discomfort together. The play can seem
bleak, but it holds unexpected humor and a tender reckoning with what makes life meaningful
when meaning itself feels precarious.

About Transports of Joy
Transports of Joy was founded by Courtney King and Luis Lojo, who split their time between
Harrisonburg and the New York City area. King was born and raised in Harrisonburg. She has an
MFA in Theater from Columbia University. Lojo previously ran his own production company in
Mexico City and is currently the Head of Audio and Video at David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center.
Endgame is the company's first production.

[Offline] [Flexible] Experienced player / GM Looking for group in Staunton / Waynesboro VA area

Hello! I moved to Staunton, VA a year and a half ago and my current online game is ending. I'd like to make more IRL friends here, and am hoping to find a group. I'm open to any system (obligatory "no, not F.A.T.A.L."), but am experienced in D&D 3.5 and 5e, Pathfinder 2e, Starfinder, Call of Cthulhu, Fate, GURPS, Palladium, and miscellaneous others.

I'd prefer to be a player at first, but would be willing to GM once I get to know the group.

I wish this went without saying, but I'm looking for a group where everyone is supportive of the rights of others, regardless of race / orientation / nationality / gender / etc.

17 East Beverly Antiques Closed?

Howdy,

I'm from Harrisonburg and I always stopped by 17 East Beverly Antiques whenever I was in town. Stopped by last weekend and they were closed, with many of the window displays gone.

Does anyone know what happened and/or what will become of the store's sellers and inventory? Their sellers usually had a good selection of things I was looking for and I'm sad to see them go.

Volunteers & USB drives wanted for a community Linux Workshop in Staunton! 🐧

Hey Staunton! We’re putting together a Linux Workshop and could use some help from our local Linux/open-source folks.

We’ll have a room set up with tables, volunteers, and Linux USB drives so people can bring in their laptops and try Linux without installing anything or replacing their current operating system. Think Repair Café, but for exploring Linux.

We’re especially looking for volunteers who are comfortable with Linux and would enjoy sitting down with beginners, helping them boot from USB, showing them around the desktop, answering questions, and generally making Linux feel a little less intimidating. You definitely don’t need to be a Linux wizard, we’re looking for patient, friendly people who like helping others learn.

We’re also looking for donations of new or gently used USB flash drives. We’d like to prepare drives that interested attendees can take home so they can keep experimenting after the workshop.

The bigger idea behind the event is community resilience: sharing skills, extending the life of older computers, exploring open-source alternatives, and helping our neighbors become a little more confident with the technology they use every day.

Want to attend, volunteer, donate a USB drive, or just learn more?

Staunton Public Library

Saturday, September 12 • 1 PM - 4 PM (Volunteers welcome to come at noon)

And if you know someone in the Staunton/Augusta County area who loves Linux and would be great at helping beginners, please send this their way!
