Stuy Commute

>Hello, incoming freshman here with a few questions...

For those who commute from Queens and take the LIRR, which train do you take? ( Specifically asking if you take the Port Washington line)

Also, how lax is Stuy about being late? Like, what is the latest you can arrive without being marked late with any consequences if you have a Homeroom/Period 1 start time of 8:00 AM?

I'm asking because I live closest to the Little Neck station. There is one train that leaves around 6:30 AM (arrives at Penn around 7:00 AM) and another that leaves at 7:05 AM (arrives at Penn around at 7:40 AM).
The 7:05 AM one seems like it might be tight to take 2/3 subway to chambers street and walk to stuy to get there at 8, but taking it would allow me to squeeze in 30 more minutes of precious sleep.

Any advice from upperclassmen or fellow Queens commuters would be greatly appreciated!

How bad can Stuyvesant be? I am going to Stuyvesant this year. And I fear the worst. Just more 4 years of potential back pain and sleeplessness.

June 2nd 2026
Hi! I am an 8th grader going to Stuyvesant this year,

This all started one day when 7th grader me (summer of 2025) was studying at this tutoring area called MEGA academy (it is in flushing, you can search it up) And long story short this guy named Alex from Stuyvesant who was a 10th grader at the time volunteered to help with the tutoring in the afterschool time, then one day, I asked to see one of his homework assignment grade in math and this guy got a 66/100. As soon as I saw that I began to doubt his intelligence and the schools workload, it seemed like he was one of those nerdy kids who does well, yet I feel like he represented the schools students very badly as he made me feel like the whole school is a bunch of meatball heads who don’t socialize and are being held at gunpoint to do this shit work. (Emphasis intended) So here is a list of detailed questions I would like students from stuy to respond to.

I heard terrible rumors about this school, stress, suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety. How hard can this really be? Then I thought to myself, it usually takes an hour to get to stuy from where I live, accounting the schedule and going home that is 9 hours of school (travel included)+ homework. I really fear the worst that my passions and dreams are going to be smothered by some stupid math equation you only use in specific fields. I want to be in Stuyvesant to learn skills, pursue my dreams. Not to debate how many apples Sally put in her damn recipe.

To double down on my fear, I saw this one TikTok of a girl who arrived a manhattan at 5 am 🥲 just to go to some public library and study. (I know media is exaggerated but I just want to know the truth) So, are you guys happy with life at stuy?

I know Stuyvesant has alot of programs, but are they actually good? There is a whole section of programs about stuy on their epsilon website, I feel like they might not be better than regular school programs, could you guys tell me about the people of the programs? Say for example computer science and coding, did these teachers just graduate college or they masters at their field and have tons of experience working with people around the world? I wish to know if the Stuyvesant hype is all a lie by Chinese standards or not.

Also, the lack of diversity in this school scares me. I understand that to get into stuy you must take the shsat, which is fair game, but that’s not my point. I come from a family of Chinese heritage. I understand that they want us to get good grades in order to pursue a “good life” (Emphasis intentional) and usually, the stereotypes are correct. You become a white collar worker. Doctor or lawyer, nothing special…And my fear is that I make friends with people who don’t share the same vision as me.
( I don’t wanna address my goals as they may seem to big and I dont want a giant paragraph)

I hope to see some answers soon, thank you for taking your time to read this.

how many classes in 11th and 12th?

Curious what people's schedules look like once their class schedules are a bit less formulaic and they have the option to take more electives in junior and senior year. How many classes are people taking in their third and fourth years? Out of those classes, how many are classes like choir, math team, regeneron research(?), etc that might not have the same grades or homework compared to a traditional class? Please be clear if you're including PE in your class count.

Taking world languages

Is it likely or unlikely I'll be put in a language I put as first? I put Japanese first but the two other languages I put (Mandarin and Spanish) don't really interest me as much, so I want to know if I should worry about the possibility of being placed into them.

If you’re a student at Stuyvesant who’s in the Math Team and/ or took the Placement Test, I have a few questions

so im and incoming student for Stuyvesant and Camp Stuy is coming close. I plan on getting into the Math Team and scoring high on the Placement test to get into an advanced math course. Since I know there are definitely plenty of intelligent students at Stuyvesant, I was hoping some of you could offer me some aid or advice for the test. Help in studying, what to expect and review would make me very grateful, but any aid will help. To give my credentials to back up why I’m high in expectations for the testing, I am taking the Algebra 1 Regents (scoring 100‘s on all the tests available) and took Khan Academy to master Geometry (took a few regents and also got 100’s). Moreover, I do AMC 8 and score decently well. Disclaimer that I’m not trying to brag AT ALL and I know others are probably so much more talented than me. I’m just giving you my background so you see the situation I’m in.

Thank you 😊
