Did she pull an Ed Sheeran?

Just saw that Cleveland! is second to Patient Zero on iTunes and third of the four new tracks on Spotify top 50. So even how badly it’s being panned, there’s not a drastic difference on charts or streams. Me personally I know it’s bad- but I do still listen because it’s catchy. 😆🫣However I’m streaming the other 3 way more and actually really loving them.

I recently saw a post where people were dragging her down because of the way she was posing at the vmas and i felt that very unnecessary and hateful which made me question why does people hate her so much.

Hey everyone I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit for this but I'm posting it here anyway. So I am mainly a country & indie listener with my favorite artists being Vansire, Dolly Parton, Kate Bush, Bjork and probably the Womack Sisters. Anyway I've heard lots about Taylor Swift from friends and my cousins who were much younger than me so I decided to take a listen to her entire discography for the first time! I listened to the Taylor's Versions and not the original so not sure if that is the correct way to do it for a first time listener. Here is my ranking of every album, my fav songs on each album and my overall thoughts!

1 - Red (Taylor's Version)

For some reason this was the first Taylor swift album I decided to listen to as it was my cousins favorite and I have to agree with her. This album felt very consistent throughout with banger after banger and has the best lyricism through her discography IMO. I do feel like this album is a bit long and could potentially have been trimmed a little bit (e.g stay stay stay and starlight).

My favorite tracks from this album would be:

• State of grace - This is probably my favorite song in her entire discography. The intro of the song is super atmospheric and I could almost tell where I was before the starting lyrics even happened. The song also has some of my fav lyrics from her - "Up in your room and our slates are clean just twin fire signs, four blue eyes", "Mosaic broken hearts". Just a perfectly written song imo.
• All to well (10 minute version) - This song actually grew on me quite a lot over time. For some reason after hearing how well liked this song was I was expecting a really big production but it was kinda the opposite which isn't necessarily a bad thing. All too well also has some really solid lyrics as well "You kept me like a secret but I kept you like an oath sacred prayer", "Time won't fly it's like I'm paralyzed by it". I also feel like this song could have ended at about 6 minutes in and it would have worked just as well.
• The last time featuring Gary Lightbody - This song scratches the same itch as Exile does. The harmonies between them and the way their voices complement each other is so darn good. Also the way they both are conveying two very different emotions during the same song makes it feel like you are getting two stories in one. Also the production is incredible.

2 - Folklore

Folklore has some of the best lyricism in her discography and the production was really well done but I felt like compared to Red it sounded a little more boring while Red had such a variation in production. I think working with Aaron Dessner really helped her out here to keep it super concise. I feel like nothing in this album had to be trimmed every song was a play (no skips).

My favorite tracks from this album would be:

• August - The production of this song is so incredible it feels so incredibly atmospheric. It felt like I was lost in the world of her story telling and is in my top three from her discography for sure. The ability for her to be able to transport me into another world with her songwriting is incredible.
• Exile - Bon Iver carried this track. The way his super low voice came in with all the emotion is incredible. Again like August this song fully immersed me into the story with the emotion that was sung with. Also, I listened to the long pond version of this on Disney Plus and I honestly prefer that version more because it was more laid back and allowed me to focus on their incredible voices.
• Mirrorball - The metaphor of the mirrorball being able to mean so many things is a really clever way of writing this song. This is also one of my fav pieces of lyrics she has "I can change everything about me to fit in you are not like the regulars the masquerade revelers drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten"

3 - Fearless

This album takes me back to when I was in Secondary School (or what Americans would call High School) and all the problems 15/16 year old me had in life. All the crushes I had and all the innocent sort of romcom crushes I had. The nostalgia carries this album so much even though I have never heard this album before in full (I've heard love story and you belong with me before).

My favorite tracks from this album would be:

• Love Story - I know this is the biggest song on the album but I don't even care. No song takes me back to secondary school more than this song does. It felt like I was crushing on someone HARDD.
• The Best Day - This just reminds me of my childhood and how good my relationship with my dad was. Especially the idea of a parent being your best friend and perhaps not having a bunch of 'popular friends' . It makes me tear up listening to it but I love it so much.
• Fifteen - The nostalgia FULLY carries this song. It made me think of coming back after the summer holidays and being overwhelmed with the idea of starting new school and hoping to be 'noticed'

4 - The Tortured Poets Department

This album would be a lot higher if it was much shorter and concise. Still I ranked it this high because lyricism on this album is really good and her voice sounds INCREDIBLE. The low register suits her so well and I think in terms of vocals this is her best sounding album for me.

My favorite tracks from this album would be:

• So Long, London - The intro is so captivating and her voice sounds so emotional and deep and rich on this track. It felt like she was truly singing AT ME.
• Florida!!! - Might be controversial but this is her best collab she has done excluding Lana del Rey. The lyrics on this track aren't even my favorite but there is so much going on in the production side of things which is absolutely my fav thing.
• So High School - This is actually gonna trigger so many people I'm guessing. It's just a bop. I love vibing to this song and singing along even if the lyrics are super cheesy and cringe. B.S justice for grand theft auto.

5 - 1989

This is the album I definitely associated Taylor Swift with most and for good reason. Just bop after bop after bop. The main reason I didn't rank this higher is the lyricism didn't feel as strong as an album such as Red or Folklore. Also out of all her album this has the best "vault tracks" but I'm not too sure what that means? This is the album I'm playing on the happiest summer day.

My favorite tracks from this album would be:

• Style - The electric guitar in the beginning and the synths are just an eargasm. Such a bop of a song that I love singing along too.
• Wildest Dreams - I've always wanted to use the sound of a heartbeat in my own production but have never been able to do it well. I love the way she did it here. The production is really good and it is very vivid.
• Is it over now? - I saw a video pop up on TikTok with the breakdown of this song with Harry Styles and I am here for it. It feels like such a 'real' song. Plus even though the idea of someone sleeping in a models bed might not be relatable the idea of them trying to find someone better is.

6 - Speak Now

Speak now to me feels like a less nostalgic version of fearless but a little bit more pop which was necessary in her evolution. I also don't really relate to a lot of the songs on the album since it didn't feel nostalgic like fearless and not feeling how I am currently. Nonetheless it still has some really good tracks such as:

• Enchanted - This is such a good love song. It feels like every teenage persons dream on how they find love with love at first site. This is a song I could definitely imagine playing at a wedding too. This is in my top three Taylor swifts songs for sure.
• Sparks Fly - Her vocals on this song is super strong and I love how it feels like I am so in love (this is defo a nostalgic track to me). "My mind forgets to remind me you're a bad idea" "Hit me with those green eyes as the lights go down something that will haunt me when you're not around"
• Never Grow Up - This song encapsulates everything that I think the best day does. It reminds to be grateful for the smaller things. Back as a kid the idea of my dad waking up early and cooking annoyed me as it woke me up but I wish I could have that now.

7 - Midnights

I was really stuck on how to rank this album as it had some of my favorite tracks but also a lot of the other tracks felt a bit 'mid' to me and a bit generic. I feel like some of the songs are not meant for me and that is totally okay. E.g bejeweled and karma - I wish she had gone the snow on the beach and would've could've should've direction

My favorite tracks from this album would be:

• Snow on the beach (featuring more Lana del Rey) - This feels like such a Lana del Rey song through and through and I love that as I love Lana. I wish she went more this direction throughout the album to be honest.
• Anti-hero - I like this song so much as I relate to it a lot in my personal life which is why it's one of my favs. "I'll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror" hits so fucking hard
• Would've could've should've - This song is what midnights should have been too. Incredible production and incredible lyrics. Similar to snow on the beach I wish she would have gone this way for the album.

8 - Reputation

I'm gonna be honest this really isn't my favorite album since it isn't for me but it didn't feel like it didn't feel right to rank debut above since reputation is objectively a better album. The songs felt more like generic pop songs and the lyrics on some of the tracks didn't feel very personal/relatable or very 'Taylor swift'.

My favorite tracks would be:

• New Year's Day - a very simple ballad but it does it's job effectively and feels the most Taylor swift to me on this album.
• Getaway car - The bridge is so good and the references to the met gala - "the ties were black the lies were white" felt like such a pop culture moment .I can definitely bop out to this.
• Don't blame me - My cousin showed me a clip of this at the eras tour as she went and the vocals were absolutely on point. Vocally one of her best songs.

9 - Taylor Swift (Debut)

The first thing that I noticed when listening to this album for the first time was how young she was when she wrote it - it was also the last album I decided to listen to in my Taylor Swift run. This album is also an absolutely solid debut album for someone who is so young.

My favorite songs:

• Teardrops on my guitar - this would have been a song I would have listened to CONSTANTLY when I was like fifteen and I love it for that.
• Our song - this is the perfect country/pop bop that I love. It has been in my head for the last few days constantly.
• A place in this world - the idea of not knowing what you want is such a strong feeling that lots of young people feel so it feels so relatable. Also the mashup of this and New Romantics made me love this song probably more than it deserves.

10 - Lover

This album faces a similar problem to me as reputation but just feels less creative and unique. A lot of the songs felt a bit generic to me.

My favorite songs:

• Cruel summer - still not a huge fan of this song but on this album it ranks as my favourite on this album. I'm guessing because my little cousin plays this EVERYTIME I visit her it's a bit overplayed.
• Lover - this is a song that I hear at pretty much every wedding I go to and I do quite like it but it wouldn't be my choice personally.
• Death by a thousand cuts - great lyricism and I like the metaphor of love being a sort of boarded up house.

11 - The life of a showgirl

This does not feel like a Taylor Swift album. The lyricism is really quite cringe and not meaningful like all her previous albums. Also I think the petty diss track against Charli XCX is super cringe and makes her look worse in the end. I can't see myself ever listening to this album again imo.

Overall I have really enjoyed listening to her discography and can truly understand why she is such a big deal. The way she can connect to her fans with her lyrics is amazing. I bought some of her albums on vinyl and I listen to them quite frequently!
