Anyone else have problems with Waves plugins?

Tape16 recognizes waves as “waveshells” but not the actual individual plugins. When I try to open a waves plugin I just have the option to click on one of the 3 waveshells. It just opens a random waves plugin or crashes. Is this normal right now? or am I doing something wrong.

Feature Request - Location points

Maybe I'm missing a trick, and I'm fully on board with the whole rewinding of the tape, but ...

Would it be possible to have say three location points that you can set, clear and recall so that you can easily assign one to the head of the song, and maybe first chorus and solo section, or whatever sections you are currently working on.

So you would press the location point button when the tape is in the correct position (make sure it's empty or clear the location point before hand) - and this would lock in the current position . Then the next time you press that location button the tape would rewind or fast-forward to that location, without you having to keep your hands on the transport (which makes things easier if you have for example a guitar in your hand). Programmable Location points where standard on tape transports, so I don't think this goes against the whole Tape16 ethos,

0.9.250 TESTERS NEEDED for plugin stability

Have made some decent ground on plugins and was hoping to see if anyone can test any of their broken plugins for me. MacOS and Windows

- EZDrummer is working which was a big request, however I haven't used it before so I don't exactly know the exact functionality. Let me know if anything is missing.

- Can someone please check to see if Kontakt is working?

- AU plugins have been disabled temporarily as well.

Feature request. Please make more functions accessible with a keyboard.

I would like more shortcuts! For picking and choosing and assigning tracks. Also it would be more like an actual tape recorder that was controlled with buttons

It's still in the early stages!

I know a lot of you are expecting everything to work perfectly from the moment you download it, things will change/break constantly as we update and create better systems for Tape 16, but remember it's still very much in it's formative months.

It's part of the fun / and pain of building something together. We really do love the feature suggestions everyone's bringing to the table, and please keep bringing them, the list is getting stronger everyday. It's so beautiful to make something musicians can enjoy on a more personal level, and to cross into so many genres is wild!

The great focus now is broader plugin support + VTSi's which is easily the weakest point and most crashable part of Tape 16 and may take a little longer than usual, so bare with us. <3

Many VSTi don't work

For some reason many of my VST instruments don't work in the pre record slots. I see they receive midi fine, I also see they generate sounds internally (if they have meters in the plugin) but I can't hear anything, the VUs are not showing anything in Tape16.

Also, all my Native Instruments open with the window super small and I'm unable to resize them.

The one that don't work at the moment (VST 3 versions on Mac):

  • Decomposer Sitala
  • Native Instruments (every instrument from komplete 15 standard)
  • XLN Addictive Drum
  • Superior Drummer 3

The ones that do work:

  • BX_oberhausen
  • Arturia Pigment
  • Splice instrument
  • all UADx instruments I own

Can a mackie controller extender be used to get 16 channels?

I have an SSL Nucleus with uses a mackie control + a mackie control extender to work as a 16 channel surface control. I can't quite figure out how to set this up at the moment, any cue?

Right now both sections of the controller are assigned to the same first 8 channels.

Doh - I left it running...

Accidentally left Tape16 playing. Now I have 13 hours of tape. Quitting the app doesn't help me get back to tape start. Is there another option other than 10x rewind?

Tape 16 and VST 2 Plugins

I am really enjoying this daw and love the simplicity of it. Its what recording should be, fast and direct. I am wondering though, does it support VST 2 plugins? I did a deep scan and tried adding my VST 2 Folder in the plugins window but it doesnt seem to read them and only VST 3 plugins are visible. I am using TAPE 16 on Windows 11. Thanks for this great daw.

Feature Requests

These would moreso be general ideas, rather than things that would actually be needed, but some that have come to mind Include:

Separate bias and calibration settings on each channel (similar to UAD Studer A800 settings) which would be printed onto that channel during recording.

Bleed/ crosstalk for each channel, greater "damage" for the outside tracks.

A 24 track version would also be great.

Even though the idea of the plug in is more about committing and not getting hung up with the editing, the idea of having an edit window in which it is a graphic of the top of the machine and a splicing block, where you would have to scrub to find the edit points, then maybe click a pencil icon, turning the cursor to a white china marker where you mark your edit, then clicking a razorblade and having the ability to slice the tape (similar to splitting clips in pro tools) and then dragging and dropping in a separate part of the tape (session) or importing another session and then manually splicing them together, all with no undo function could be interesting. It would be labor inducing enough and with no undo, risky enough to make it a last resort or enough of a deterrent to make you just record the take again, while also allowing for interesting comps of songs recorded with different settings printed (eg Strawberry fields forever). No idea how it could all be done, but just an idea.

Possible high frequency roll off for the amount of time the track is recorded over (could be switched off in options)

When bouncing tracks down (EG Multiple Toms tracks to two tracks) the saturation and noise builds up.

Enjoying the DAW very much, has created some interesting results and made me work a lot harder at playing, which has been a great result. These are just some ideas, to make things even more authentic/ difficult, but also create some more limitations and interesting sounding recordings. If none of these are added in any way, I'm still happy using it and will look forward to see what else comes from it.

Bug - time marker inconsistencies when importing wav

When stopping the tape at 6.25 seconds, for example, and clicking the import button, the popup suggests to insert the wav file slightly further, at 6.86.

I have tested both accepting as it is and manually inputting the 6.25 second mark as shown by the big red time display below.

The former is the one that inserted the wav exacly where I need to - the latter inserted it too soon - which means there is a discrepancy between what the big red clock is saying and the actual marker in the logic..?

I would appreciate if people could replicate this to confirm. (Mark in and out, export, then import onto another track at the IN marker, pan each one to a different side and see if it comes out in mono)

PS. amazing work, thanks for the weekly updates to the software. Something to look forward to with a lot of joy.

tape 16 doesnt receive audio from SSL Alpha 8 interface

I just got tape 16 a few days ago and im so excited! Just one thing… i cant record anything because the daw doesnt receive any audio signal from the interface. I checked that the laptop (mac) does receive signal. And even when i press the test button in the audio I/O menu in tape 16, the alpha 8 receives the test signal. But for some reason it doesnt receive any audio signal.

Thank you for your help and this amazing daw!

100% Fun

Having started out on a Tascam 4T, my drift away from Ableton/Logic/Luna into the realm of the DAWless had me eyeing up Fostex tape machines etc

Glad I didn’t go back to tape, as a spin through demoing a song on Tape16 triggered a similar vibe and a great result.

Metronome won't sync

Okay so I like the concept and want to give it a try. Downloaded the latest version . As I am used to recording with a click., i Enable it in the settings, and record to it. Tape runs from 00:00 However, when I play the recording back, it doesn't align with the click. Does it mean I must print a click elsewhere and import it?

Edit: the tracks won't sync in general?

I printed a click track off S1. Imported into T16, recorded a new track to the click. It won't sync. I erased the click and tried to record a second track along to the first one. Won't sync :(

One of many tunes done and many more to come!

- No idea why the bass track is set to MIDI, it's actually a les paul recorded dry with Neural DSP Parallax bass amp sim with -12 semitones transposing!

- The drums were done with an electric kit (Alesis Strata Prime) and EZDrummer. They're a bit out because I did them in Logic after bouncing the rest from here. I then (a week later) wanted to bring them into here using the import function but of course, I can't get it to sit in the right place. EZDrummer now works great in Tape 16, so not an issue moving forward.

- Mellotron is MIDI, Logic's stock instrument

- Abbey Roads Plates on S1

- Amazing fun!

- Oh yeah, halfway through it rings out but then comes back in with vocals. Also after the run through I solo each instrument. Sounds like a goddamn hot bath of custard it’s so warm and gluey.

Vst instruments issue

Hi, i just bought Tape 16 and i'm trying to use EZ Drummer 3 in it but the vst tells me that the Audio Engine is inactive and ask me to check the Audio Device. Is it a routing or clock issue? I cant play my patterns in the vst too.

I tried with other synth and it the same issue there is no sound that comes out. Do i need to use a midi controller?

I checked and the track has "Rec" enabled input is on "All midi" and ouput set on Mix
