Santa Clara DA Says Deputies Lawfully Shot, Killed Knife-Wielding Man

Santa Clara, CA - The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office announced Wednesday that it concluded two sheriff's deputies lawfully shot and killed a suicidal man who charged at them with a knife last year in San Jose.

Prosecutors published a report that determined the man, 43-year-old Jose Martinez-Nolasco, had "no interest" in peacefully resolving a traffic standoff with law enforcement officers, and that the deputies lawfully used deadly force because they were in the face of danger.

The shooting occurred on Oct. 27, 2025, after Sheriff's Deputy Christian Spinola made a traffic stop at Fruitdale and Leigh avenues in San Jose at 7:30 p.m. The stop was made because the vehicle allegedly had expired registration tags, the District Attorney's Office said.

The driver, Martinez-Nolasco, pulled over, but then quickly tried to get away before pulling over again, prosecutors said.

Martinez-Nolasco then allegedly refused to exit his vehicle and began barricading himself inside, before deputies responding to a call for emergency assistance made by Spinola helped surround Martinez-Nolasco's vehicle with three patrol vehicles.

A standoff ensued for more than two hours while deputies and members of the county's Psychiatric Emergency Response Team tried to deescalate the situation, prosecutors said.

During the stalemate, Martinez-Nolasco allegedly admitted that he was suicidal, saying that he had "talked with death" and would rather die than return to jail. According to the District Attorney's Office, a deputy tried directing Martinez-Nolasco to mental health professionals at the scene, but Martinez-Nolasco refused to accept help, allegedly saying that the only way the deputies could end the standoff was by killing him.

At 9:30 p.m., a deputy fired pepper ball rounds through the rear window of Martinez-Nolasco's vehicle, causing him to exit his vehicle, prosecutors said.

Martinez-Nolasco then exited his vehicle through the passenger door and allegedly attacked deputies on the scene with what prosecutors described as a large knife.

When Martinez-Nolasco ignored the deputies' alleged calls for him to drop his weapon, he was shot by two deputies with multiple rounds of 40mm less-lethal projectile rounds, prosecutors said.

However, Martinez-Nolasco continued to refuse to surrender his weapon and kept charging at the deputies, allegedly causing Deputy Jose Rios and Deputy Douglas Ulrich to fear for their own safety and shoot Nolasco six times, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Martinez-Nolasco was subsequently pronounced dead at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

A preliminary toxicology screening later revealed Martinez-Nolasco had been under the influence of methamphetamine and amphetamines, prosecutors said.

Salford, UK - A 48-hour stand-off between a wanted man in Salford, England was brought to an abrupt end when police pulled him off a roof while he slept, the Greater Manchester Police said on Sunday (Aug 16).

Simon Harris, 37, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing public nuisance, criminal damage, public order offences, burglary and assaulting two police officers.

He was charged with four counts of criminal damage, two counts of assault of an emergency worker, intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance, burglary dwelling and theft, the BBC reported.

Emergency services had responded to the incident last Friday (Aug 13) at a property on Reservoir Street in Salford, spending two days at the scene.

The 37-year-old man, wanted on recall to prison for other matters, had set himself up on the roof of the property, refusing to leave.

A cordon was also put in place as the man was allegedly throwing tiles from the roof, Manchester Evening News reported.

In footage of the incident shared by the police, Harris can be seen lying face down on the roof as officers in tactical gear quietly approach, gently placing a ladder against the structure.

Without alerting the man, an officer scales the ladder. As he reaches the top, the man snaps awake.

The officer grasps the man by his jeans and a struggle ensues, with the officer pulling the man down and the latter resisting.

During the scuffle, Harris' jeans are pulled off and both take a tumble off the ladder and onto the ground below.

Multiple officers then surge in to aid with the arrest, as the video ends.

2 young sisters found safe; babysitter tied to prior kidnapping

Atlanta, GA - Two young sisters who were the subject of an AMBER Alert have been found safe after police say they were abducted by their babysitter, a woman investigators have linked to a similar kidnapping case involving a newborn five years ago.

The Atlanta Police Department said 4-year-old Zola Cooper and her 11-month-old sister, Norah Cooper, were recovered Monday from a trailer in the Atlanta area. Their accused kidnapper, 42-year-old Lakesha Brown, was taken into custody.

Police said investigators received information that Brown may have been staying in a trailer on the property. When officers arrived, they heard a baby crying inside.

Officers entered the trailer and found Brown with both children, according to police.

The girls appeared to be in good health and were taken to a medical facility for evaluation. Investigators said they were still working to determine a motive.

Atlanta police said Brown has ties to Alabama and was involved in a similar case about five years ago.

In August 2021, Brown was accused of kidnapping a 4-day-old boy from a home in Fairfield, Alabama, near Birmingham.

Authorities said Brown was a family friend who was at the home with the infant, his mother and grandmother. The baby's mother went to sleep because she was not feeling well and later discovered that both Brown and her newborn were gone.

Investigators eventually took Brown into custody, but the baby was not with her. Tips later led authorities to a home where the infant was found safe and reunited with his mother.

Brown was charged with first-degree kidnapping in that case.

Atlanta police said information from Alabama authorities helped investigators locate Brown and the two Georgia children in the latest case.

Investigators said Brown had known the girls' mother for about a year and had gained her trust.

Police said there were communications indicating Brown would return the children, but she allegedly failed to do so.

Atlanta police received a call about the missing children around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Investigators worked through the night, obtaining warrants and using cellphone data to help narrow down Brown's location.

The investigation involved multiple Atlanta police units as well as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, FBI and other law enforcement agencies.

Both children were safe following their recovery as authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction.

Edmond, OK - The Edmond Police Department released the bodycam video showing the recent public intoxication arrest of Oklahoma Secretary of State Benjamin Lepak.

Around 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 14, police went to the McDonald's restaurant on North Kelly Avenue. They found a man, identified as Lepak, standing outside the fast-food restaurant holding a bag of food.

In the video, Lepak could be heard telling police that he had come from his home just a block away. The officer noted that Lepak appeared unstable on his feet and had slurred speech.

Lepak then told officers that he drove to the McDonald's after a church function. He initially denied having a drink but later told police he had less than one beer.

"I want to eat my McDonald's," Lepak told an officer. "My kids had been ... went to a new school tonight ... this week, and I went to the event with them. I've been eating healthy all week, so I got McDonald's because this is my night to have McDonald's, and that's it."

According to the police report, the officer said it was apparent that Lepak drove to the McDonald's and that he had "extremely slurred speech." The officer could also "smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath."

Lepak then volunteered to get an Uber from the location, which the police report said wouldn't be necessary if the Oklahoma secretary of state was not intoxicated.

The officer arrested Lepak about 10 minutes later for public intoxication, according to a police report. He was booked into the City of Edmond Jail.

While being put into handcuffs, the officer told Lepak that he was lucky that he wasn't being arrested for driving under the influence.

Gov. Kevin Stitt appointed Lepak as secretary of state in October 2025. Before being placed in the back of a police cruiser, Lepak told officers that he worked for the state but didn't say in what capacity.

Montgomery County pursuit ends in fiery crash

Montgomery County, TX - Body-worn camera video captured the dramatic moment Montgomery County deputies rescued a theft suspect from a burning vehicle after a chase ended in a fiery crash near U.S. 69 and FM 1485, according to the sheriff's office.

The incident began when deputies responded to a reported theft in progress at the Walmart in Porter.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies arrived and saw a suspect running from the store with Walmart loss-prevention personnel following him.

The suspect got into a vehicle and continued trying to evade deputies. The sheriff's office said he failed to stop for a marked patrol unit that had its emergency lights and siren activated in the parking lot before driving recklessly from the area.

The driver, identified by the sheriff's office as 53-year-old Michael BeBawi, entered the northbound lanes of U.S. 69 at a high rate of speed and later exited at FM 1485.

As BeBawi approached the FM 1485 intersection, the sheriff's office said he lost control of his vehicle while trying to turn and head east.

His vehicle crossed a curbed median, hit two signs and collided with another vehicle before crossing another curb and striking a Chase Bank sign.

The vehicle then caught fire.

Deputies immediately tried to reach BeBawi, who was still inside the burning vehicle, according to the sheriff's office.

Crash damage initially prevented deputies from opening the driver's side door. One deputy then entered the burning vehicle through the passenger side and unlocked the driver's side door, allowing deputies to pull BeBawi out.

As the fire intensified and the vehicle began to explode, deputies moved BeBawi as far away as possible. They also moved patrol vehicles and cleared access for responding fire and EMS personnel.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.

The sheriff's office said BeBawi has prior arrests related to theft, theft-related offenses and resisting arrest.

BeBawi is currently in the Montgomery County Jail and is charged with evading in a vehicle and theft.

No charges were filed against the superior officer who shot and killed a man

Superior, WI - The Douglas County District Attorney will not file charges against a Superior police officer who shot and killed a man in April.

On April 7, Superior Police Officer Ibrahim Carson shot David Donald Ducado Menton, 42, during a physical altercation outside an apartment complex in Superior. Investigators with the state’s Division of Criminal Investigation, part of the Wisconsin Department of Justice, led the probe into shooting.

In a final report on the incident, Douglas County District Attorney Mark Fruehauf said the state would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Carson hadn’t acted in lawful self-defense.

“The evidence in this case supports the conclusion that Officer Carson was lawfully entitled to use deadly force to defend himself at the moment he used such force,” Fruehauf wrote. “The evidence does not support the filing of criminal charges against Officer Carson.”

At the time of the incident, Carson had been searching for another wanted individual, Robert Sloan, who was suspected of theft. The Superior officer located Sloan, Menton and Autumn Khalar around 9:45 p.m.

When Carson arrived, Menton and Khalar began walking from a vehicle toward the apartment complex. The Superior officer told the two to stop, but Menton continued toward the building. Carson pursued Menton, and the two ended up struggling on the ground. Carson repeatedly told the man to “stop resisting” before the officer shot Menton in the back of the head.

The report states Menton said what sounded like “I’m not gonna shoot” about six to seven seconds before Carson fired. The entire altercation lasted roughly 30 seconds.

The report states that a 9 millimeter handgun was located next to Menton’s body at the scene. During the struggle, Carson said he could see the pistol on the left side of the man’s body, and he believed that Menton had control of the gun and was going to kill him. A witness reportedly told investigators that Menton, a convicted felon, was known to carry firearms. Toxicology results showed Menton also had methamphetamine in his system.

The district attorney reviewed interviews with the officer, numerous witnesses, photographic evidence and audio and video footage that include Carson’s body camera footage. Fruehauf also consulted with use-of-force expert Gerald Katchka. The former DCI investigator found the use of deadly force was justified.

Oakland, CA - The Oakland Police Department released videos of officer body camera footage of the fatal shooting last month of a man wielding two homemade spear-like devices at officers.

The incident happened at 2:12 p.m. on July 13 in a strip mall parking lot at 40th and International Boulevard in the Fruitvale neighborhood of East Oakland.

Minutes earlier, officers had responded to a call from California Highway Patrol officers who had encountered a man at a homeless encampment along State Route 185 next to 42nd Avenue and south of San Leandro Street. CHP bodycam video showed the man, identified as 43-year-old Jose Castillo, refusing an officer's command for him to drop his weapons, which were two large knives each attached to long poles.

"You're detained right now," the officer says. "You need to drop those right now."

The man instead held up the makeshift spears and verbally threatened the CHP officers, prompting the other officer to point his service weapon at Castillo, who then walked away toward SR 185. Oakland police officers then found him in the area of 12th Street and 41st Avenue, and he continued to refuse multiple commands to drop the weapons while threatening officers and quickly walking away from them.

At one point, the video shows a bystander and two young children crouching behind a tree on the sidewalk on 41st Avenue as Castillo walked toward them just before an officer holding a stun gun blocked his path. Other officers also converged at the location along 41st Avenue to follow him as he kept refusing commands to drop the weapons.

"I don't have to do nothing," Castillo is heard saying. "Leave me alone! I'm leaving!"

As he approached International Boulevard, Castillo walked into a strip mall parking lot and then turned around to face the officers, at least two of whom shot him with their stun guns.

The video shows Castillo temporarily becoming disabled, but he then takes off the backpack and begins swinging the spears at the officers, who opened fire on him multiple times from about 15 to 20 feet away.

Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said investigators were seeking the public's help in finding his next of kin.

Jefferson County, CO - A Colorado sheriff's office released body cam video of its deputies saving a dog that had been locked inside a hot van.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said that two of its deputies were called to a recreation center after witnesses saw the dog locked in the vehicle. Video showed the dog had been stuck in the van, which had been parked in direct sunlight, for almost four hours while temperatures were in the 80s.

The windows were shut and there was no visible airflow, according to the sheriff's office. The dog was also panting heavily, barking and showing signs of heat distress. Recreation center staff could not locate the owner, and the van was missing license plates, making it difficult to identify the owner.

One of the deputies broke a window and was able to get the dog out through another door. The dog was taken to a local animal hospital and was found to have a slightly elevated body temperature.

The sheriff's office says the dog was returned to its owner, who told them the van's air conditioning had been left on, but it stopped working. The owner was issued a summons for animal cruelty.

San Antonio, TX - The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) released dashcam and body camera footage showing when multiple officers opened fire on a 52-year-old man who authorities say was armed one rainy July morning.

Police say Andrew Davila died as a result of the gunfire, which happened outside a Highland Park home in the 800 block of Hammond Avenue, in east San Antonio.

The video, narrated by SAPD Sgt. Ariel Hernandez, shows police trying to "conduct a traffic stop" on Davila, who appears in the dash camera footage riding a bicycle on the sidewalk at 2:18 a.m. on July 16. Police didn't say why they tried to stop Davila, who is seen briefly slowing down before riding through a parking lot, apparently trying to escape.

“The suspect then rode away from officers, and a description was broadcasted over the radio," Hernandez said.

The dash cam video shows an officer successfully cutting Davila off as he falls off his bicycle and onto the front lawn of a home. At that point, other police had joined the apprehension effort, and multiple officers rush up to try and detain Davila.

But when they approached, Hernandez said, Davila "drew a handgun." In the footage, Davila is seen gesturing what appears to be a handgun at officers as he stays on the ground.

Police are also heard on body camera footage ordering him several times to drop the gun.

"But the suspect did not and subsequently pointed the gun at the officers," Hernandez said. "Four officers discharged their firearms toward the suspect."

Davila was hit an unknown number of times, with the barrage also appearing to ignite an item that police say was in his back pocket. A small fire is seen on the body camera video, as well as smoke immediately starting to rise, before police extinguished it.

San Antonio police say this gun was recovered after officers shot and killed a man who authorities say was armed on July 16, 2026. Officials say Davila died at the scene. Four officers shot at him.

Las Vegas, NV - Newly released body camera footage shows the intense moments as officers entered a smoke-filled home before an officer was shot by a man who killed a teen girl and attempted to light his girlfriend on fire with a blowtorch, Metro police said Wednesday.

Police said on Monday, Aug. 10, just before 12:30 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call at a home in the 4500 block of Pigeon Point Court near Buffalo Drive and Peace Way from a woman who reported that her boyfriend, identified as Jason Simmons, 48, was armed with a blowtorch and was attempting to light her on fire, LVMPD Assistant Sheriff Fred Haas said during a press briefing Wednesday afternoon.

In the 911 call, the woman can be heard telling dispatch, “Please, he’s about to burn me up.”

As officers responded to the scene, the woman updated dispatch, saying she had been shot and that she was hiding in the bathroom. She also said that her daughter was in a separate bedroom.

During this time, Simmons was attempting to light the house on fire using gasoline and a blowtorch. Officers arrived to the scene and found several small fires throughout the house and smoke was filling inside the home.

In a front bedroom, officers found the juvenile girl suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

As officers worked to clear the residence, they found a locked door to the master bedroom. LVMPD officer Zaira Venegas-Hernandez, 36, attempted to kick the door, and the suspect fired several rounds through the door, one of which hit Venegas-Hernandez, according to Haas.

Officers moved away from the door and Venegas-Hernandez returned fire. Haas said Wednesday that she fired a total of 11 rounds.

The officer then left the home and declared the incident a barricade. SWAT and Crisis negotiators responded to the scene. The woman who call 911 was still on the phone and informed dispatch that Simmons shot himself, according to Haas.

The woman exited the home and was taken to a local hospital with burn injuries and a gunshot wound, where she is still in critical condition as of Wednesday, Haas said.

SWAT officers entered the home and found the teenage victim in the front bedroom. The removed her from the house and despite life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

They also found the suspect who had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Officer Venegas-Hernandez was taken to a local hospital where it was learned that a bullet hit her ballistic vest, but did not go all the way through. She did sustain injuries to her chest, Haas said.

Police said Simmons was armed with several weapons, including a rifle, three handguns and a blow torch. Police said Simmons fired eight rounds from his rifle, seven of which went through the door, with one hitting Officer Venegas-Hernandez. He also fired a self-inflicted gunshot.

Had Simmons survived, he would have been charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon, two counts of attempted murder with the victim being a first responder, attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon, first-degree arson, kidnapping, mayhem and prohibited person in possession of a firearm, Haas said Wednesday.

Manila, AR - Newly released footage of an officer tackling an 18-year-old Black woman to the ground and punching her in the head after a traffic stop in Arkansas is causing anger and demands for a use-of-force investigation.

Alisa Hackett, of Osceola, Arkansas, was pulled over on State Highway 18 near Manila at about 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 1 after she was seen driving 71 mph in a 60-mph zone with the vehicle's hazard lights on, according to an Arkansas State Police report of the incident.

When she was pulled over, Hackett told state trooper Moisses Arellano she was rushing home because her car's window had broken, according to the police report.

Arellano noted that Hackett was not wearing her seat belt, had her license plate covered, and had a cold bottle of liquor in the front seat, according to the police report. In the dashcam footage, Arellano can be heard saying, "Why do you have a Tito's bottle, you're not even 21?" Later in the footage, Arellano acknowledges the bottle was sealed.

Arellano described Hackett as "being difficult" when he issued her citations, according to the report. He then called another trooper who said Hackett had been pulled over for speeding "a few days earlier" and had an open alcohol container in her vehicle, but was let go with a warning.

The other trooper is heard in the footage telling Arellano, "Well, she got an attitude, take her ass to jail."

Arellano then decided to arrest Hackett, who is 5-foot-1 and 118 pounds, and asked her to step out of the car, according to the report. After initially complying, "she began turning around and repeatedly asked what she had done," the police report said, adding she continued to pull away from the officer and he "took her to the ground."

"After giving multiple commands for her to roll over without compliance, I delivered one closed-fist strike to the left side of her face in an attempt to gain compliance," Arellano wrote in the report. "After the strike, she continued resisting by pulling her wrists away and refusing to roll over."

He pointed a stun gun at her midsection, but did not fire, and she then complied in putting her hands behind her back, and she was arrested, the report said.

Hackett was arrested for refusal to submit to arrest, possession of alcohol by a minor, speeding, not wearing a seat belt, improper display of license tags, and an offense for improper headlights.

Twin Falls, ID - Police released video on Friday of a mass shooting that killed three people at an Idaho In-N-Out Burger restaurant last weekend, and praised an unarmed employee from a nearby store who engaged the gunman outdoors, slowing him down and possibly preventing more deaths as authorities were catching up.

The video released by the police also showed that at least three people confronted the gunman with their own weapons during the incident.

“What happened here was violent, frightening and deeply traumatic,” the Twin Falls police chief, Matthew Hicks, said during a news conference before screening an eight-and-a-half-minute compilation of surveillance camera and bodycam video of the incident.

The distressing video, which was edited by the police to blur faces and omit graphic images, revealed more details of the chaotic scene last weekend. It shows that the gunman walked up to the drive-thru window four times and opened fire, killing an In-N-Out employee, police said.

Ten people were shot: inside the restaurant, directly outside, on an adjacent busy road and at a car-charging station in a Twin Falls visitor center lot, Hicks said.

Hicks said investigators still do not have a motive for the shooting. The gunman, identified as Chad Williams, 24, killed himself when police officers caught up to him on a nearby walking trail.

It should have been a “normal Saturday afternoon”, Hicks said at the televised news conference. “Employees showing up for work. Visitors coming to see our beautiful city. Instead, they were confronted with chaos, fear and now loss.”

As the shooting unfolded, employees from nearby stores fled to a walking trail. When the gunman headed to the trail, he came across two people, including one with his hands in the air who spoke to him, the video shows.

That man distracted the gunman from possibly pursuing others on the trail. Williams subsequently killed himself as police closed in. His body was found near a canyon.
