GIANTS ARCHIVE (07/31/1998): Giants Pitcher Balvino Galvez Loses His Composure and Attacks an Umpire.
KOSHIEN STADIUM, HYOGO - An intense game between the Hanshin Tigers and Yomiuri Giants turned wild after Pitcher Balvino Galvez alleged that the umpire was making bad calls. In turn, this frustrated Galvez and made him lose his composure. The next pitch he threw would be a home run, and Manager Shigeo Nagashima ordered for a pitching change. Galvez refused to leave, having to be physically restrained by his teammates and dragged off the field. He was seen breaking free from his teammates multiple times, and even elbowing his teammate Kosuke Yoshihara by mistake. As Galvez eventually began to leave the field, he took the ball he was holding and threw it in the direction of the umpire, striking Tiger's player Hidemitsu Hizawa in the back. The umpire and Galvez almost brawled as Nagashima tried breaking them up.
Galvez was handed a season ending suspension the next morning and a hefty fine from the Central Leauge. The Giants higher-ups were so upset with him that they suspended him indefinitely for his actions. As penance for the incident, Shigeo Nagashima shaved his head and apologized to everyone involved.
