A painful lesson learned: Why I’m never trusting a local workshop with my Speed 400 again.

I wanted to get my bike's chain cleaned and lubed, so I went to a local accessories shop and picked up a Motul chain cleaning kit.

Now, the Triumph Speed 400 doesn't come with a center stand. Since I don't own a paddock stand or a wheel roller—and I didn't have anyone around to help me roll the bike back and forth—I figured, "Why not just take it to a local workshop?" I reasoned that there’s no real harm in it; it’s just a simple chain clean, not complex technical work.

I found a local workshop that honestly looked pretty promising. They had a KTM RC, a Dominar 400, and even a Triumph Tiger 900 inside. Seeing the Tiger 900 instantly gave me confidence. I thought, "If they can handle a Tiger, they can definitely handle my bike."

For context, I am incredibly anxious about letting any local mechanic touch my bike; usually, I strictly stick to the Authorized Service Center (ASC).

The mechanic put my bike up on a paddock stand and started cleaning the chain. I don’t know exactly what went wrong or what mistake he made, but suddenly, the bike slipped right off the paddock stand and tilted violently to the left!

My heart completely skipped a beat. 🙃

Luckily, the bike didn't hit the floor entirely. The paddock stand got wedged under the saree guard, preventing it from falling all the way, and another mechanic standing nearby jumped in instantly to grab the bike. It was the only time I’ve ever thanked my past self for deciding not to remove the factory saree guard. 🫡

Thinking about it now, if that saree guard hadn't stopped the fall, the damage would have been catastrophic. The bike would have slammed into the concrete, and the paddock stand itself could have done some serious structural damage—I probably would have been left with a deep, ruined cut right in my rear tire and many more!.

However, even with that lucky save, when we got the bike up and I inspected it, my heart broke. The paddock stand had left some deep, serious scratches right on the swingarm. 💔

After I confronted the mechanic, he apologized, admitted it was his fault, and offered to touch it up with some matte black spray paint. But the damage to my peace of mind was already done.

It was a painful lesson learned the hard way. No matter how simple the job seems, and no matter what high-end bikes you see parked in the shop, never trust a local workshop if you are particular about your ride. Lesson learned.

Note: This post was formatted and edited with the help of AI to make it clearer to read. Also, regarding the attached image: the photo was taken after the mechanic spray-painted the area. Before the touch-up, the scratches were way more evident because the bright silver metal was showing through the stock grey finish of the swingarm.

Bike cleaning

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a new Triumph Scrambler 400 X and I'm about to do my first proper wash and chain maintenance. I've already bought pretty much everything I think I need:

- WD-40

- Chain cleaner

- Chain lube

- Chain cleaning brush

- Microfiber cloths

- Bike shampoo

- Grand Pitstop roller stand

The problem is that I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with the whole process. I've watched a few videos, but I'm still not completely sure about the correct order of washing, cleaning the chain, drying, and lubricating everything.

I'm also confused about where exactly WD-40 should and shouldn't be used on a modern bike. Some people seem to spray it everywhere, while others say to avoid using it on certain parts completely.

For those of you with Scrambler 400 Xs (or any modern motorcycle), what does your washing and chain maintenance routine look like? Any beginner mistakes I should avoid?

Help

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a Triumph Scrambler 400X and I've been learning how to rev-match while downshifting. Today, while practicing, the bike shut off twice during a downshift.

What's confusing is that it didn't feel like a normal stall. Both times I heard a distinct "click" sound and the engine cut out, but the dashboard stayed on normally. It restarted without any issue afterward.

I'm still new to rev-matching, so it's possible I'm making a mistake with my technique. Has anyone experienced something similar on the Scrambler 400X? Could this just be rider error while learning rev-matching, or is there something I should have checked ?

Also do y'all hold the front break while rev matching to slow down the bike ?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Should I wait for the radiator fan to stop before turning off my Scrambler 400X?

Hey everyone, I own a Triumph Scrambler 400 X. Recently, after riding around 25 km from college to home, I turned the bike off immediately after parking. Later that evening, I noticed some coolant leaking underneath the bike, which honestly scared me a bit.

The next day, I took it to the service center. They topped up the coolant to the MAX level (maybe even slightly above it), and the service advisor told me that after a ride, I should wait for the radiator fan to stop before switching off the engine.

Now I’m wondering — is this something all Triumph 400 owners normally do? Do you guys wait for the fan to stop before turning the bike off, or was this just a one-time issue related to coolant expansion/overflow?

Would appreciate your experiences and advice.

DGR 2026 - way cooler than i expected!

Attended DGR for the first time as a new bike owner and man… what an experience. The sound of all those engines together, the energy, the rides, the respect everyone had for each other — it was honestly thrilling and exciting from start to finish.

Never thought I’d feel this connected to a biking community so quickly. Seeing riders from all kinds of backgrounds come together for a cause made the whole thing even more special.

Definitely one of those moments where you realize owning a bike is more than just riding. Can’t wait for the next one 🏍️

First DGR Ride

Attended my first DGR ride. It was a decent experience, and being the only female rider there with my own Triumph made it memorable for me.

A small reminder that support for men’s mental health comes from everyone.

Help

Hey guys, I recently bought the new Triumph Scrambler 400X (my first bike), and honestly I’m super excited but also a bit anxious

Before this, I used to ride my elder brother’s T4 sometimes, so I do have a little riding experience, but the Scrambler feels much bigger and more powerful.

I had a couple of doubts:

  1. While downshifting, I usually rev match. I’ve seen some people say rev matching can damage the engine/gearbox if done often. Is that actually true, or is it completely normal?

  2. Whenever I downshift — even normally — I hear a slight “click/clunk” sound from the gearbox. The shifting also doesn’t feel as smooth as it did during the test ride. Is this normal for a new bike? Does it get smoother after the first service and break-in period?

  3. Another thing I noticed: sometimes while rev matching/downshifting, I hear a small “puff/puff” sound, almost like air blowing out from the exhaust. Is that normal on the 400X, or am I doing something wrong while blipping the throttle?

Apart from that, I’m honestly loving the bike so far. The ride quality, road presence, and overall feel are amazing.

Would appreciate any advice from experienced 400X owners

Need Accessories Suggestions

A bit late to the party but after clocking in ~8500kms, I'm planning to put up some longer rides 300+ kms. Please drop suggestions for the mods and accessories I should add (available in India).
I've done a few small rides (<150 km), and have a base set of safety gear - gloves, denim jacket and shoes. Don't have a proper riding jacket yet as I read somewhere that it's more often the set of gear one should target to add.

Real Time Mileage Indicator as default choice

What's your default option on the instrument console of your bike? I used to have the odometer as default but I have changed it to Real Time Mileage Indicator after our Mahamanav's request to consume less petrol.
