Billy threw the ball toward the basket as the buzzer sounded, then turned and walked off the court, sure he’d missed.

He was almost to the bench when his teammates tackled him in a frenzy, the crowd roaring as the scoreboard added two points—and gave his team the win.

Hoping to avoid the noisy school cafeteria, the new kid sat alone on a courtyard bench, his textbook open in front of him.

The most popular girl in school sat beside him, set her oversized brown-bag lunch between them, and asked, “I packed way too much—help me finish it?”

Happiest feeling

Today I gave my daughter-in-law my new couture dresses and custom-made hats that I had bought for occasions that have passed.
It felt surprisingly wonderful to let them go and see them have a new life with someone I love. ❤️

At our annual cul-de-sac cookout, everyone froze and went dead silent when a badly aimed water balloon sailed past its target and exploded squarely in Old Lady Vera’s lap.

She slowly stood, stared down every dad in the street, marched to the bucket for ammunition and then took off after them cackling with delight while they scattered for cover.

I sat in the shelter parking lot, too scared to open the door after losing my previous dog in an accident.

But that night, my new puppy fell asleep on my chest, and I stayed there long after he woke up.

I looked at my friend and asked, "Why are you not bothered by who I am?"

She answered, "Because your autism is not who you are, it's what you have, and God spent a little extra time making your brain special so you could fill the world with your beauty."

For six months after the stroke, Dad refused to speak a single word, staring quietly out the window whenever anyone tried to coax him back.

When my five-year-old daughter placed her toy phone in his palm today, he slowly held it to his ear and smiled, “Hello, sweetheart.”

My son's first-ever baseball game ended with him striking out and bursting into tears, while the other parents loudly groaned at the loss.

On our way to the car, the opposing catcher gave him the game ball and whispered, "My dad never came to my games, but your dad cheered really loud, so I think you won."

Sometimes if I laugh really hard I snort really loud, I really wish I could schedule them so it wouldn't happen on dates.

"it wasn't even that good of a joke," he said, with no objections to my unladylike snort.

My mom still puts out a plate for my dad every morning and pours his coffee exactly the way he liked it, even though we lost him years ago.

Watching her smile at his empty chair, breakfast never feels like it's missing anyone.

A small act of kindness I’ll never forget

A few years ago, I was having one of the worst days of my life. I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t want to bother them.

Then a friend unexpectedly showed up with my favorite food and simply said, “You don’t have to talk. I’ll just stay.”

We sat there quietly for almost an hour.

They probably forgot about it the next day, but I never did. Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness mean the most.

"so, what are you going to do now that you're out of the loony bin," my friend said as he started a car that was more rust than metal.

"I'm going to do your mom," I said, an old, bad joke that was my way of saying I felt better.

Coming home from the hospital and finally unlocking my phone, I scrolled through a flood of “get well soon” and “keeping you in my prayers” texts.

But the one I kept rereading was from my online friend: “I’m so bored without you—hurry up and get back to writing with me.”
