Is it possible to get across campus in 20 minutes

For info I’m an incoming freshman and wanted as many days off as possible for work and other stuff. I’m taking science of food 100, which is in Brehm Animal Science building could I make it to my general psyc class (in the alumni building) within 20 minutes?

Difference in college experience at UT vs Auburn

I am out of state for both and rising senior, and it's been a dream of mine to go down south for school. Money is not an issue and after a ton of research and visits to both campuses Auburn and UT are my top 2 for a finance degree. Now disclaimer I am very extroverted and would like to rush and be active in the 'party' scene. I am just curious for your opinion on the difference in student life and culture. Thank you so much!

How to get involved at UTK?

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on reddit (I hope I am posting this in the right place) so bear with me.

I (24 M) am moving to Knoxville to pursue a Masters degree at UTK. I do not know anyone at UTK or in Tennessee at all. I am a bit worried that I will struggle to meet people. I know that I will be busy with school but I still want to have a social life.

When I was in undergrad I visited one of my friend from high school's dorm and ended up clicking with his roommates so I did not have to try very hard to make those friends. I did have the class "friends" that were in my department at school but nothing that really developed into anything outside of class. I am worried that this may be the case if I do not put myself out there.

While I was in undergrad I did not take advantage of the opportunities that my college had to offer. I was not in a club and didn't play rec sports or anything and that is something that I do regret. Would it be weird for me to try to get involved in anything like that? Are those sort of things mostly catered towards undergraduate students?

A little about myself if there is anything I could get involved with my interests: In the past I wouldn't say that I'm the most outgoing person but I am trying to work on it. I am really into sports, I watch most sports and I like to play basketball and golf. I sometimes play video games in my free time and like to watch movies and TV. I do go out occasionally but not nearly as much as when I was in undergrad. I also am trying to start going to the gym more consistently. I am a pretty adventurous person in the sense that I am down to try almost anything to see if it is something that I would enjoy.

TLDR: I want to make friends and get involved during my time in Tennessee but not sure where to begin.

I am open to any suggestions on how to get myself out there and thank you in advance!

Looking to make some friends in Knoxville

Hey everyone! I just moved to Knoxville a few days ago for grad school at UT, and I don’t really know anyone here yet. Most of my time has been spent unpacking, and now I’m realizing how bored I am when I’m not doing that.

I’m into architecture, trying new restaurants, gaming, music, grabbing coffee, and just exploring the city. I’d be down to check out local events, play some games, or just hang out.

If you’re in a similar situation or looking to make some new friends too, feel free to comment or send me a message. Also, if you have any recommendations for cool places to visit or good food spots, I’d love to hear them!

Recent news: shorter degrees in the works, tenure and discipline policy changed and Tamar Shirinian gets paid

Hello UTK! This is Keenan Thomas with Knox News, and I wanted to share a few of my recent stories.

First up, I spoke with UT System President Randy Boyd in an exclusive interview about new three year, 90-credit hour degrees he plans to implement at every campus. The degrees would be separate from a traditional bachelor's degree with the goal being to get students into the workforce faster. You can read the full story here: University of Tennessee offers shorter degrees to meet workforce demand

Next, I had a story this morning detailing the changes UT has made to its policy on academic freedom, tenure and discipline. Essentially, the updates strip faculty members and the Faculty Senate from having a voice during the suspension or firing process, and gives the provost and chancellor more control. You can read the full story here: Why and how University of Tennessee changed faculty discipline process

Finally, I broke the news on Monday night that the UT System Board of Trustees approved a $1.9 million settlement to former assistant professor Tamar Shirinian. I'll have more updates coming soon, but the original story can be read here: University of Tennessee to pay $1.9M to professor fired over Charlie Kirk comment

Thank you for reading!

Foreign Language Petition

I was wondering if anyone has ever petitioned to have the foreign language requirement waived? Only thing between me and wrapping up my degree and not sure if it will be possible. I've tried Spanish twice at UT. Once the professor said if you did not speak Spanish then to immediately drop her beginning Spanish class. I took her at her word. Second time I was moderately successful, but found that the class consumed most of my bandwidth for other classes so I dropped it. Even if you have tried petition and it was rejected I would be curious to see if they had any comments or feedback. Thanks

I’m looking for someone to take over my lease at Redpoint Knoxville as soon as possible. This is a cottage-style student apartment located about 8 minutes from the University of Tennessee campus, making it a great spot for any UTK student looking for a comfortable, affordable place to live.

Rent: $854/month

You would be living in a 4-bedroom cottage-style apartment with 3 great male roommates who are good friends of mine. They’re fun, respectful, and easy to live with. There’s never a dull moment, and you’d be stepping into a solid living situation.

The apartment comes with:

Fully furnished space
Private bedroom and private bathroom
In-unit laundry
High-speed internet
Full kitchen
Pet-friendly community
Internet and utilities typically included
Bus service available near campus

Redpoint also has great community amenities, including:

Resort-style saltwater pool
24-hour fitness center
Clubhouse with theater and game rooms
Sand volleyball court
Study areas
Grilling stations

This is a great option for any student looking for a spacious off-campus setup that still keeps you close to UT. If you or someone you know needs housing, please reach out. I’d be happy to answer any questions and give any additional information.

You won’t regret this stay. I promise.

Best places on or near campus to post a flyer? Trying to find homes for these kittens!

These kittens were discovered in a dangerous situation when I was doing rescue volunteering, so we took them in. We had a foster lined up, but it fell through when they found out these sweeties have medical needs for the next few weeks.

Their treatment isn't hard with the setup I can provide, but it is going to be a little extra work for 3-5 weeks and consistency is needed. They are otherwise perfectly healthy, flea treated, vetted. Been turned away by every rescue because everyone is full. Happy Paws is helping financially but have no fosters available right now, and I can't keep them.

All costs sponsored for the right home (including ALL supplies, spay, vaccines, etc.).

What places other than Hodges have bulletin boards where I could post this flyer? Any other ideas to spread the word?

Edited to be clearer & briefer.

What screams “adult learner” without actually saying it?

Could be:

  • discussion posts at midnight
  • studying in parking lots
  • reheated coffee
  • multiple monitors
  • doing homework during lunch breaks
  • getting excited about asynchronous lectures

What would you add?

Severely under employed

Any other graduates from HCB or just UTK in general who is either unemployed or severely under employed? I’m a Finance major, graduated spring ‘23 and no one will even call me back, is it that I’m cursed or are other graduates experiencing the same MASSIVE problem?

My mental health is deteriorating, I need to connect with people who are experiencing what I’m experiencing b/c everyone thinks that I’m not trying or am just choosing to suffer… any and all input is appreciated…

Shoutout to Sam’s Kitchen

New Mediterranean restaurant in the old location of Hungry Sumo, next to Chaiyos. The owner, Sam, is super kind and has been running it himself. Everything is made to order, everything I’ve tried has been phenomenal! Reasonably priced as well. Always nice to support a local business with all of the chains popping up nearby. Check them out and give them some love!

Are Bikes Safe on Campus?

I’m an incoming transfer student and bought a nicer bike to commute to school. Don’t know my class schedule just yet but was wondering if bikes are often distributed/ stolen on campus during the day. Any areas to be avoided and any tips or tricks I should know of?

I built a debate app for civility. Users wanted to be toxic.

So I’m obsessed with debate, I’ll be honest, and I’ve noticed, as I’m sure we all have, that discourse in recent years has gotten really toxic.

It’s either a dogpile, throwing insults, being condescending, I don’t need to rehash what I imagine we all already know.

I built an app where people could swipe on topics, get matched with someone who disagrees, and get a score on their civility. The idea was that if you’re always an asshole, your shitty civility score would follow you and no one would want to talk to you.

I added a feature in passing called toxic mode that did not judge your civility. Spew your venom, no holds barred.

That was the idea.

Every time I got an install on the app, every single user immediately jumped into toxic mode. Out of 100+ downloads, not a single person wanted to have a civil discussion. They wanted the messy version. The heated version. The version that felt more like a chaotic internet argument than a polite debate club.

So I stopped fighting it and built a lightweight browser version where you can just pick a topic and jump in:

https://thinklavender.com/ragebait

The goal is still to get people talking to people they disagree with. Maybe the first step is not making everyone perfectly civil. Maybe it is just getting them in the same room.

And if that room has to be a little toxic to get people through the door, so be it.

Would love feedback on the idea and whether this feels like something people would actually try.

21M just looking to meet some new people

Hey y’all,
I’m 21 and moved to Knoxville about a year ago. I’ve met a few people through work, but honestly I don’t have much of a friend group here yet, so I figured I’d throw a post up.
I’m pretty easygoing. I play a lot of pickleball, like checking out bars every now and then, love driving back roads with music on, and I’m always down to just hang out, grab food, or do something random.
I’m gay, but pretty low-key about it. Just putting it out there because I’d rather be upfront. I’m honestly just looking for genuine friends, whether you’re gay or straight.
If you’re around my age and looking for someone to hang out with, shoot me a message. It’d be nice to have some people to grab a drink with, play pickleball, or just kill time on the weekends.
